There have many several posts in this thread and many in previous threads about how Kate lacks ambition and all sort of stuff. She also gets compared to recent Crown Princesses who've all had relatively successful careers before marrying their princes. While none of us actually know Kate and her career ambitions, it's extremely unfair to compare her to anyone especially the Crown Princesses of Europe. All these women had careers before meeting their princes and therefore did not have the obstacle of finding a job while being labeled "Prince X's Princess." Letizia, Maxima, Mary, and Mathilde all had their careers started and off the ground before meeting their princes. Unlike them, Kate started dating William during university which might make job hunting a little hard. Maybe she tried looking for a job right after univeristy, maybe not. But to compare her to the rest of Europe's princesses is not fair.

If Kate wants to take part in shooting parties that is up to her, she has a right to do it and it suits Royal life.

Personally I hate that sort of thing, major animal lover here and I won't even kill a spider. Must admit a bit of me always hoped Willaim would marry a girl who was not into shooting parties, hunting etc But that is an interest of his so it is more likely he will be with someone who likes it too.

Just one of those things, I hate seeing pictures of Princess Mary in fur or at shooting events but that is her choice and it does not make me think less of her good charity work.

I would think Kate is probably (of course I cannot be certain) more impartial to it than anything.

One should maybe not forget that hunting today is a very strictly controlled sports which is needed because so many fields and parts of a formerly open landscape are now used for human dwellings. Anybody who dreams of his/her own house in the countryside surrounded by a large garden should be aware that he forces hunters to reduce the number of deer which used to live there, in exactly this spot one is moving to. Within such a humanly controlled environment measures need to be taken to keep the number of wild animals in accord with the space there is for them and thus to secure both the animal's interests and the interest of nature. Hunters today are more protectors of nature than anything else: here in Germany they are even forced to kill the amount of deer the state's nature protection authority tells them is needed. If they are not limiting the amount of wild animals in their hunting ground, they may even loose their license. OTOH there are places in Bavaria where the shooting of wild rabbits is strctly forbidden due to the diminishing of the rabbit's population over the years. I just read that if the numbers are growing as they do at the moment, quotas for rabbit hunting have to be reintroduced the next years.

So it's not comparable to the singing bird hunt in Italy eg where it is a kind of people's sport to kill little birds while in fact these hobby hunters are endangering whole species but it is a form of nature preservation job done in a traditional style.

Here, this hunting is done eg by monks and you can buy their pheasants in the monastary shop if you registered in advance... So I doubt it is something to worry about morally (I have deep respect of the humble life these monks lead by their own choice!)

That's why the royals do it too, if I understand correctly. Officially they always say it has to do with keeping the estates ecologically balanced or something, but then I read in some articles about it that the royals have the birds imported specially for the shoot.

Most of the shooting estates breed the birds and then release them a week or so before the shoot. That way the birds are still disorientated and they can almost guarantee a good shoot.

There have been a couple of prosecutions here, because gamekeepers are laying down poisoned bait to kill protected Birds of Prey, (such as the Golden Eagle, Red Kite, Merlin, Osprey, Hen Harrier, Owls), which they say steal the chicks.

Helping Kate to fit in

As Prince William's girlfriend begins work at Jigsaw, Lesley Thomas takes a look at the couple behind the fashion chain
Kate Middleton's new job as a fashion buyer came as a bit of a surprise to the style cognoscenti this week. With her wholesome, Home Counties tastes and lamb-as-mutton dress sense, Prince William's girlfriend is hardly a style icon.

Good lord when reading that article you almost start to think the girl was predestined to be Williams wife! Her new bosses are even organic farmers! Charles must have a permanent grin on his face.

Well, if you read this article you must say that Catherine really fits in with her employers. And if you think about how many woman have both money and a wish for comfortable, classical clothes instead of trendy "rags", then it's not just a niche Jigsaw inhabits but a quite comfortable position.

I doubt that Her Majesty's Sandringham Estate will ever be prosecuted because of an offense like that. ;) I'm convinced that an estate whose heir is an organic farmer and nature preservatist by heart would ever allow for anything that is not good for nature. Which is why I don't have problems with William and Catherine attending a shooting party (and why I have ordered wild duck for the sunday lunch...)

The girlfriend of Prince William had the help of Prince Charles and her parents to land her FIRST contract"

I think it answers the question whether or not she had a job before

Not really. First of all, Hola! is not an official source and its information cannot be regarded as a fact (imo).
And then, they speak about contract. Kate could simply be helping with Family buisness. In this case she would hardly have a contract.

I am not saying she had a job, I just say (and it's only my opinion) that we don't have prooves she didn't. Innocent until prooved guilty.

"A 26 year old gamekeeper, who works for the Queen, has been fined five hundred pounds and ordered to pay four hundred and seventy in costs after admitting setting an illegal trap."

"infestation near a pheasant eating area"

What he should have said was the pheasant feeding area
The only reason for leaving a trap uncovered, is to trap and kill BoP, cats or any other perceived nuisance!

I have no problem with Catherine picking up a dead bird, as I have no problem with anyone tucking into their wild duck, chicken etc. I choose not to eat meats but, I would not force anyone to abstain! :flowers:

Well I cannot understand why Kate took a degree on Art History and why she hasn't, at least, try to find something in this area of work! London is such a good city to work in this kind of environment!!! Christie's for example could be a great opportunity! Christie's provides exciting and challenging job opportunities in a arts-oriented environment. I'am pretty sure they will say yes if she asks for a job there. She would be such a very good Public Relations for them at Christie's!

Christies or Bonhams can't just take someone on if they don't need anyone. Employment with such prestigeous auction houses are rare. She could have applied to dozens of establishments but, they may have been unable to offer her anything at the moment, perhaps she gave up and took the job she had been offered at Jigsaw. :flowers:

Many people get a degree in their chosen subject, only to find that employment is hard to find, or that it is not the kind of job they wanted after all. I have a friend who dropped one career, became a nurse and then became a medical doctor, even now she is not sure that is what she really wants to be!

me neither!

Do you know with even 10% certainty that she didn't?

well we are not 100% sure of all the things we say here! But at least for what we have seen so far I think she hasn't try to get anything on her area of work. She is a different person with some status in the society and I think, in my opinion, if she asks for a job at Christie's she will get it! Even if employment in this house is rare, IMO she would have that opportunity if she has applied. (sorry for my English)

UK employment laws are such that they cannot just dismiss one person to employ someone else. Catherine, is only Williams girlfriend and as such has very little social status as yet.

If she asked for a job anywhere, she would have to get it on merit, otherwise the press and other disgruntled applicants would challenge it. Companies have to look closely at whether they can afford another assistant and what the assistant needs to specialise in. Do they need a junior? Most companies could not justify employing and training someone they think might leave after a short time, IMO.

Auction houses want their salerooms full of buyers, not people hoping for a glimpse of 'some girl', even if she might one day be a princess! :flowers:

But maybe exactly Christie's wasn't a possibilities because of the Royal family's connection to it (see Viscount Linley...). That would have really looked like Catherine was just a protegée of the BRF which is far from what she wants at the moment, IMHO.

The article in the Telegraph? said that she would not only be buying accessory at Jigsaw but children's clothing as well - a field she obviously is interested in. Probably her job with Jigsaw resulted from her efforts to establish her own business in that field and we might see the day she becomes a partner with Jigsaw in that field...

And: it's her life not ours after all! So if she wants to work at Jigsaw, fine. Why should this be not as good as working for Christie's I for one don't understand. If you dream of designing children's clothing, Christie's surely is the absolutely wrong place for you. But having a degree in arts history makes for an interesting background as a lot of designer children's clothes are inspired by historic costume design. Much more so than female fashion!

I understand some members are still very tied up over whether Ms Middleton had a job or not before her current employment, but without confirmation we really need to get over it and move on.

Endless circular speculations of "did-didn't-don't know" have become very tedious as they are carried over thread after thread, saying what has already been said a dozen times before. Even over-excited engagement speculation holds more interest than this tired debate.

Now that she has a job, can we please move forward? Since this is Kate's current events thread, musings on what she did or didn't do previously have missed the boat.

thanks,

I think we all have to remember that whatever theories we have about who Kate is, we really don't have a clue about what kind of person she really is. Just my two cents! ;)

Art history isn't that marketable a degree subject. There are a lot more graduates than jobs in related areas. I think a lot of people with degrees in art history don't go on to careers in a closely related subject. It's not at all unusual for a person with a degree in art history to go into the fashion business as Kate's doing rather than looking for work in a gallery or a museum.

I haven't looked at this thread lately, but who is Catherine? Is William seeing another person?

Catherine is Kate's real name. It's been stated that Kate prefers to be called Catherine, not shortened way of it, Kate.
As far as we know, Prince William is still dating Kate (Catherine) Middleton.

As far as I know, Kate has never granted any interviews or publicly given her opinion on any subject. I find it amazing that some people can already decide if she deserves adoration or not. I also can't imagine why anyone should need to adore a stranger, be that royalty or celebrity. They are still strangers. Personally, I find the young lady admirable to having kept her composure throught the last 18 months since graduation. Being followed around is an unnerving thought nowadays with stalkers and psychos, and the garden variety attention seekers.

Hello. For the past couple of weeks I have been observing the disscussion being held at this thread. It seems to me that there are some posters present here that view Kate Middleton as the "best fit for the royal family", while others stongly disagree upon the suitablity of this woman.
I, personally, cannot take these two extreme sides.
To me, Kate represents the modernization the Royal Family is undergoing. I stronly agree with the statement that how can we judge a girl we hardly know, but then again, it's not like every citizen in England will be sent a "Kate Middleton: Biography." Whatever information we recieve from media is our only chance of getting to know the girl who MIGHT some day be the future queen. It is unreasonable to ask public to not make assumption and judgements about a girl that has been in the public eye for more than 4 years now, in my opinion. Granted, some people choose to believe that Kate IS doing something with her time, that she IS stunning, she IS a good girlfriend etc. While others tend to ask questions, and try to see more than what they read. Calling former, not judging Kate, is incorrect. Both are judgements made about Kate. Just my opinion though. :)

Kate is a public figure now that she dates the prince. In my opinion, she needs security and has done very well with her status. I think she sees herself having a good chance of becoming a Queen of England and wants to make sure she plays the cards right. :ermm:

I'm sure most of us welcome 'opinions', :flowers: I get 'annoyed' when people state their opinions as fact! As for her looks, they have always said 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder', what one person finds attractive, another might think... Yuk.

We don't know what sort of relationship William and Kate might have but, to state they have split up or are getting married next year, should, IMO, be followed by a 'IMO'.

I would hope most people have realised that the media is totally unreliable about giving any facts, look at the way they treated Camilla. I just find it hard to understand the absolutely viscious remarks made about this girl, they seem to me unjustified, when we know almost nothing about her!

I agree Skydragon, the media is going to report on the most interesting stories they can find because they want to sell. If they know that the majority of their readers are loyal Diana fans and don't necessarily like Camilla, they are going to feed into that whether it's based on facts or not. I think with William and Kate's relationship, they are such a hot topic right now that the press is going to report every little rumor they hear. IMO :)
