Great Pictures as always.
I don't understand why our King is at the Queen's left side and her Husband the Prince Consort on Her right side.
Normally A Reigning King has "pré- séance" regarding a Prince Consort.
Skippyboo is right. The 2 sovereigns are in the middle. King Philippe, as a gentleman, is left from the lady. The custom derives from the very old days when the cavalier was expected to defend the lady with his sword he pulled with his right hand! The Queen, as a woman, as a longserving head of state, stands right (she always sits right in a coach, a limousine. Pr. Philip sits left to her in the house of Lords when she opens parliament, for instance. Only Exception: The Queen rides into the city of London in a ceremonial procession. For purely practical reasons the Queen sits on the left side so she might have no difficulties in reaching for the sword the Mayor of London holds to her to touch). The 2 royal Dukes are, of course, junior to the Queen and King Philippe, so they flank them.
The same system goes for state banquets: The heads of state sit in the middle while lower ranking persons sit beside (the lower degreed, the further away from the heads of state).
