I am delighted to see that The Queen decided to send the most charming and gracious member of the Royal Family to this challenging day. She is really marvellous and I have always admired her. It is such a huge shame that so many people feel the Monarchy is not relevant as these are the events which require experience and sensitivity and politicans use them for political gain members of the Royal Family[ies] have no such desire and are there to support and listen. Well Done The Princess Royal ... and no better an individual to handle such a horrific situation IMO

Yes, I agree with you, bertie. The Princess Royal does things in a no-nonsense fashion and no-one doubts her sincerity.

It's really wonderful that the title "The Queen of Australia" was used during this service. I despair of newscasters and politicians here, who should know better, referring to HM as "The Queen of England". Princess Anne did very well during her speech, and I hope that she gave some measure of comfort to your countrymen-and-women.

Well technically Princess Anne is also Princess Anne of Australia the same as she's a Princess of Canada etc.
That's entirely incorrect, BF. As our constitution dictates, Australia is a constitutional monarchy whereby an hereditary monarch acts as our sovereign Head of State. His/Her family, the BRF, are princes of an entirely foreign institution. There is no royal family of the Commonwealth of Australia. Anne is no Princess of Australia, such a title has never existed and never shall.

The only thing I know is that Anne's address at the service was extremely well received. I heard it on SKY and TVNZ that her speech, alledgedly written by the Queen moved many to tears.

It was the right Royal presence at the right time and in the right place. That got good press coverage. Peolpe were moved and touched. What more can you ask for?

It isn't just the service she's going to, she's also travelling to visit some of the devastated areas to see the effects of the fire first-hand. The Queen will get a very good first-hand report of the situation from the Princess Royal, and I'm sure that'll help her feel connected to the people and their condition than if she'd asked anyone else to represent her.

The Princes Royal has already returned to London, as she was due to fly out Monday evening...

You're over-complicating the situation. The G-G and the State Governors represent the Sovereign in the exercise of those powers reserved for the Sovereign (swearing in governments, giving Royal Assent to legislation, etc etc). Princess Anne represented her mother the Sovereign in a personal and not a constitutional manner.

As far as I'm aware, yes. Some sort of parliamentary 'dogma' or the like though the RF bear no official Canadian titles, and are observed only by their granted British styles and titles.

The Queen has herself refered to her family as the Canadian RF (some sort of address I believe whilst on an official visit), though there are those in Canada, particularly the media and opposing parties, who continue to refer to the Windsors as the BRF so the idea that there is a Canadian RF does have it's detractors and some will argue on constitutional grounds etc...

Except for the Queen of Canada, members of the Royal Family are always referred to by their British titles. They are also translated into French for use among French Canadians.

About half-way down this well-referenced Wikipedia article, there's information about the Canadian Royal Family. Apparently HM considers the Royal Family to be the Royal Family of Canada, according to a speech she made in Nunavut in 2002.

Pics 4.3.2009

Britain's Princess Anne arrives at Gibraltar's airport on March
4, 2009, for a three-day visit to the British territory which is
contested by Spain. Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in 1713
under the Treaty of Utrecht but has retained a constitutional
claim should Britain renounce sovereignty.

I like the third pic a lot and pic 4 is a great shot as well

Thank you for the lovely pictures iceflower.

HRH Princess Anne arrived in Gibraltar Wednesday on an official visit to the disputed territory that has stirred up old tensions between Britain and Spain.

Great pictures... though IMO Anne is looking a bit like an air hostess (Lufthansa?)

quotes from article...
The Spanish government made an official complaint to British authorities ahead of the royal visit describing it as "inopportune" and an affront to Spain...

If this is the case, Spain (or the Spanish government) is too easily affronted.

Jose Ignacio Landaluce, a deputy who sits on the Spanish parliament's foreign affairs commission, said: "The visit of a member of the British Royal Family to Gibraltar shows their total support for the sovereignty of this British colony.

Indeed!

Both the Gibraltar Government and the Opposition have said they welcome visiting members of the Royal Family. One opposition member told local media last week that the visit by Princess Anne was "none of Spain's business".

Quite.

More interestingly, here's a good example of the Royal Family being used by the government to promote British interests, in this case neither trade nor culture, but foreign policy.

Some major problems..

Britain's Princess Anne at the inauguration of 'Princess Royal Medical Centre',
a military medical establishment, in Gibraltar on 05 March 2009. Princess Anne
inaugurated a military hospital in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar in
an act that irritated Spain, Spanish media reported. The hospital was located
in a border area the sovereignty over which was unclear, Jose Carracao of Prime
Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's Socialist Party was quoted as saying.

That would nearly be a bit too early

Here are some more pics from today, it's obviously been a bit windy
and as you can see on pic 1 Anne's husband Tim joined her on the trip!
