I think W.Y.CII asked the question regarding my four categories. As I said it is all rather fluid because each royal house or family does things slightly differently. Eventhough both Norway and Spain officially exclude siblings from the royal house (although Norway at an earlier stage than Spain), they go about it differently. The infanta's are no longer members and as such are not present at official events, Märtha Louise is no longer an official member but still attends most state visits/banquets (following in her aunts footsteps).

In the Netherlands prince Constantijn and princess Laurentien are official members of the Royal House doing a few engagements, while cousins Maurits and Bernhard are no longer official members since their cousin ascended the throne. So, different layers in 'minor status'.

Sweden also has about 4 different categories in which the family members are divided (only the royal house and royal family are official). The largest being the king's family (all titled children and grandchildren), add princess Birgitta for the royal house, add the king's other sisters and countess Marianne for the royal family, and finally add the non-titled spouses of the princesses for the full picture.

Yes it is indeed fluid (and complicated to me). There are too many factors can affect the siblings' role, and I think the tradition of the royal house/family is a determining factor? Elena and Constantijn or Astrid are in the same position and situation (closest sibling of monarchs, the heir is still young) but their roles are quite different.

But I think in most RF only the spare is required to take up an active royal role until the heir of heir begins doing engagement, e.g. Isabella has to fulfil an royal role until Christian's first child is old enough to the engagement solely, whether Christian becomes king or not. Same in Belgium and the Netherlands, Astrid and Constantijn continue to support the RF until Elisabeth and Catharina-Amalia can handle engagement solely. When the heir is ready they may retire from royal duties, but who knows. For the other siblings, I think they are expected but not required to take up royal duties.

And how about the siblings who marry into other royal house? Probably it's not common now but I am thinking what happens if a spare of a reigning RF marry another spare from another reigning RF? Can she continue to take up royal duties for her own RF, just like Benedikte and Astrid? (am I off-topic? anyway I seriously doubt whether I can witness a royal-royal marriage in my life)
