This year, the royal world said some sad good byes to beloved members. Here, TRF pays one final tribute to these cherished Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses. May they rest in peace.

QUEEN JULIANA OF THE NETHERLANDS (1909-2004)
Only five weeks before what would’ve been her 95th birthday, Queen Juliana the Netherlands, died in her sleep the morning of March 20th at Palace Soestdijk. In her last hours of life, the beloved and humble woman who had ruled the Netherlands from 1948 to 1980, was surrounded by her husband, Prince Bernhard, and her three eldest daughters, Queen Beatrix, Princess Margriet and Princess Irene.

On March 30 the funeral service for Queen Juliana took place, ending with a burial at the family vault in the New Church in Delft. In accordance with the late Queen’s wishes, a “white” funeral was held, to represent hope. Female mourners were asked to wear subdued colours with accents of white while male mourners were asked to don dark suits and ties. The Queen’s four daughters wore white suits with accents of black. Although there were reports that Prince Bernhard, who had been deeply affected by the passing of his wife, was too frail to attend the funeral, did in fact attend with much support from his four daughters.

The following day, Prince Bernhard, Queen Beatrix, Princesses Irene, Margriet, Christina and Pieter van Vollenhoven issued a pubic thank you, stating in part, “We are all deeply moved by the many warm expressions of sympathy and esteem we have received on the death of my wife, our mother and grandmother. … The many memories of her reflect the many facets of her personality. From her convictions and love of others, and with determination, warmth, a keen senseo fhumour and a great love of nature, she fulfilled her destiny as Queen and Mother. Her commitment to people and her sincere interest in everything affecting society have left a lasting impression on all of us.”

2004 should've been known as the year of the wedding -- with three Crown Princely weddings taking place (within just as many weeks no less! ;)) and even more royal weddings to keep love alive and in the palace air!

CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK OF DENMARK TO MISS MARY DONALDSON (14 MAY 2004)

In true grandeur and with tears in his eyes, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark married Australian-born Mary Donaldson, who was escorted down the aisle by her father, John Donaldson -- in a kilt honouring the family's Scottish heritage to boot!

The 32-year-old bride donned a gown by designer Uffe Frank made of white duchess satin with Cala-sleeves and a six metre long train. The Irish lace veil was previously worn by the groom's maternal grandmother, the late Queen Ingrid, as well as the groom's maternal aunts, Queen Anne Marie Greece and Princess Benedikte, and his cousins, Princess Alexandra zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Princess Alexia of Greece.

In his wedding speech to his new wife, Crown Prince Frederik said in part, "Then you walked into my world, and already much has happened. Now, there are two worlds - possibly even more - which from now on we will explore together, side by side. In light and darkness, in summer, autumn, winter and spring - always. The joy and and strength you give me is like the sun in the daytime which, with its radiance, melts all doubts and darkness on earth. And like the moon at night, you shine with a watchful and delicate beam of gentleness, which extinguishes the mischief and deceit used by the symbols of darkness. This moment is 'us' - the two of us - newly together, young together, innocent together, in love together - simply 'together.'"

The wedding capped off nearly two weeks of pre-wedding events, including a rock n' roll concert, a sailing race in Copenhagen Harbour (the bride-to-be won), dinner at Christiansborg Palace (the the first time Mary wore a tiara), a performance at the Royal Theatre, receptions at the Austrlian Embassy in Denmark, Parliament and the Copenhagen City Hall and the Vega party.

For the complete pre-wedding activities, see http://www.theroyalforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2212&page=1&highlight=mary.

PRINCE FELIPE TO LETIZIA ORTIZ ROCASOLANO (22 MAY 2004)

Showing due respect to the victims of the March 11 terrorist attacks, the wedding of Prince Felipe to former journalist Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano was a scaled back affair that was deeply religious and honoured the roles to be taken on by the couple.

Manuel Pertegaz designed a V-necked gown that flowed in one continuous line from the neck down to the floor. The gown was embroidered in silver and gold thread around the sleeve cuffs and the hem of the dress in a heraldic motif with fleur de lis, ears of wheat and clovers. The platinum and diamond diademe donned by the bride belonged to her new mother-in-law, Queen Sofia, who wore the same diademe on her own wedding day in May 1962, and before that was the wedding gift of Princess Victoria of Prussia.

In his wedding speech, the Prince of Asturias addressed not only his new bride but also his parents and the people of Spain, saying in part, "I imagine it is obvious to all, because I can neither hide it nor wish to: I am a happy man. And I am certain that this is because I have the feeling of seeing and taking part in a dream come true: I have married the woman I love. To combine reason with the strength of love and feeling has always been one of my goals in life. That is why today we are celebrating that Letizia and I are uniting our lives in a communion of love, responsibility, work, respect and mutual giving. Our union will last forever, and we offer it to our families and above all to our destiny, intimately linked to the future of Spaniards. We face our future with very deep hope and illusion. To serve Spaniards is the great personal and institutional commitment with which Letizia and I set off on this new stage in our lives ... Day by day our knowledge of each other and our mutual respect, our complicity and the way we complement each other, have grown and bolstered what has strongly led us together and to marriage. it is also very important - and you have told me this many times - that we find in each other the peace necessary to reflect, enjoy, and share everything that makes us grow as persons, that makes us proud and helps us withstand the intensity of our lives. And it is even more important because it must be the fountain of family harmony and happiness. I have no doubts that we will achieve this."
