dress with ribbons

sometimes royals wear dress with ribbons (like in the pic posted below), is there some rule on which occasion you should wear such dress, and does the color of the ribbon mean any thing?
thanks

great thread, i've learned so much from it.

but i stil have some questions.

does the sashes only come with the orders? if you haven't received any order, you have no sashes even if you are a royal? isn't there a national order or sth which the King&Queen usu. wear?

in the site http://www.medals.org.uk/, many orders have ribbons, but we only see royals wearing them. are non-royals allowed to wear sashes? if someone non-royal received a Order of British Empire, does he wear the OBE sash?

I dont think you have to be a royal to wear sashes.
In the pics posted in post #190 you can see the presidents wearing them.

There are sashes and ribbons for all medals and orders and decorations alike (they are "included"). For medals of different kinds there can be different colour ribbons, and it is decided when it's granted what colour the recipient will get. Sometimes if you are not certain of what order you are looking at, the sash or ribbon can give one a clue if you are used to these things.

And yes, non-royals also wear sashes and ribbons with orders, medals and other deocrations - it comes with it. There are rules for every order, medal and decoration saying who can be eligible to get it, and when it's awarded it comes with a sash or ribbon.

Royal Orders

i thought it would be nice to have a thread for royal orders.

any photos of royals of different countries wearing different sashes, medals or any other insigns of royal orders?

But is that we must wear the sashes everytime at Banquets?Because i saw sometiems at banquets Queen Elizabeth II did not wear sashes.

To answer a previous question, HM King Carl Gustav wasn't wearing the sash of the Order of the Garter (which was the senior British Order he was wearing in the form of the breast star of the Order), because he was in a naval order-of-dress (which means type of uniform, nothing to do with the orders of Knighthood), in which one does not wear a sash.

HMQueenElizabethII;

Invitations to functions generally state wheather or not guests should wear Orders Decorations and medals.

To try and summarise the rules for wearing:

Full-sized Orders Decorations and medals are worn in formal military dress during daylight hours (and in the early morning eg: dawn services etc).

Miniture decorations and medals are worn (on the left lapel) with full-sized orders (eg: a sash and up to four order stars) in formal evening dress, however, as mentioned previously, if one is wearing black-tie and a dinner jacket, one doesn't usually wear a sash.

In various orders of military dress however, one doesn't wear the full-sized medals and decorations which would otherwise be pinned over the left breast pocket, but instead wear the ribbon bars of the corresponding orders, decorations and medals over the left breast uniform pocket, while at the same time wearing the senior breast star and (in some cases), sash. A terriffic example of this was in 1980, when HRH The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales represented Her Majesty at the independance ceremonies of Zimbabwe.
