King Olav was the son of Prince Carl of Denmark and Princess Maud of the United Kingdom (granddaughter of Queen Victoria). So King Edward VII was the maternal grandfather of King Olav, and I suppose it's the family connection that resultet in him being made a Knight of the Thistle.

Norway and Scotland had strong ties several hundred years ago. King Eric of Norway married the sister of Robert the Bruce. In fact in the Middle Ages, Scotland seemed to have closer relations to the Scandinavian countries than did England. A few Danish princesses married Kings of Scotland and one of them brought with her in her dowry the Shetland Islands which had previously belonged to Denmark.

Yes, the ties between Norway and Scotland are strong... I've remembered that Norway was the third member of the Auld Alliance. If King Henri VII were on the throne of France, he would also be a Knight of the Thistle, I guess. :)

And can a non-Christian monarch be honoured with the green ribbon of the Order of the Thistle? What do you think?

That is partly true! In the beginning the Shetland Islands, Orkneys and some other islands in Scotland belonged to Norway. These islands became a part of Denmark through the Kalmar union (a union between Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the 1350, brought together by Queen Margrete I, but Sweden left after a while), and thus a part of the double monarchy of Denmark-Norway that lasted from about 1350 to 1814. But it is true that the islands were a part of the dowry of Margrete, daughter of Christian I, who married James III of Scotland.

Just one other question... why are some of the sashes worn from left shoulder to right hip or Right shoulder to left hip. Is there a reason for this? I noticed that CP Victoria has her sash Left Shoulder to Right hip and her sister and brother have their sashes worn the reverse. What determines this?

I just read something about that! It depends on the order you recieve. It says quite clearly in its statutes how (and I suppose when) you wear the specific order. I also think that the degree of the order also determines the way you wear the order (as with the Bernadotte "kids"), as the heir to the throne have a higher degree than his/her siblings. That's why some orders sashes are worn from left shoulder to the right hip and visa verca. Who have come up with these statutes I guess is a different matter :)

The second is not the case, I think--ribbons (the ones that go across the shoulder, I mean, not the small ones on the chest) go with the highest degree only.

That might be, but I also guess that it depends on the order and its statutes. The St. Olav order in Norway have a sash, a star and a necklace as it's highest degree. But then again, this is not my area of expertise :)

...
The highest degree of the Order of St Olav, the Grand Cross, has the star and the ribbon. The Collar is a special distinction.
