dress with ribbons

sometimes royals wear dress with ribbons (like in the pic posted below), is there some rule on which occasion you should wear such dress, and does the color of the ribbon mean any thing?
thanks

There's a really good thread that talks about those ribbons (sashes). Found here: Sashes

Hope that helps. :)

great thread, i've learned so much from it.

but i stil have some questions.

does the sashes only come with the orders? if you haven't received any order, you have no sashes even if you are a royal? isn't there a national order or sth which the King&Queen usu. wear?

in the site http://www.medals.org.uk/, many orders have ribbons, but we only see royals wearing them. are non-royals allowed to wear sashes? if someone non-royal received a Order of British Empire, does he wear the OBE sash?

I dont think you have to be a royal to wear sashes.
In the pics posted in post #190 you can see the presidents wearing them.

There are sashes and ribbons for all medals and orders and decorations alike (they are "included"). For medals of different kinds there can be different colour ribbons, and it is decided when it's granted what colour the recipient will get. Sometimes if you are not certain of what order you are looking at, the sash or ribbon can give one a clue if you are used to these things.

And yes, non-royals also wear sashes and ribbons with orders, medals and other deocrations - it comes with it. There are rules for every order, medal and decoration saying who can be eligible to get it, and when it's awarded it comes with a sash or ribbon.
