I think there are 2 different ciphers for King Harald.
The one you posted: The H and a 5
but also: a H and the Roman 5, so a V.

Pass, I think the valid version, which include roman 5.

The Norwegian royals' monograms are up on their redesigned official website. If you go to "The Royal Family" and click each individual profile, you can see them here: kongehuset.no - English

From the above photograph, previously posted by Lord Sosnowitz, I have approximated this rendering of Prince Willem-Alexander's monagram as if viewing from directly above the embroidery.

Default Willem-Alexander and Máxima

The Prince and Princess were given a fantastic set of table damast with their monogram woven into it.

You can see their very elegant intertwined W and M monogram clearly on the blue boxes with the napkins, part of the wedding gift.

Princess Máxima uses this set for diners at Villa De Eikenhorst.

See picture.

Default Official monogram of the Queen

The official monogram of the Queen as used on all royal standards is a golden crowned 'B'.

See picture.

Maximize for a detailed picture.

The Monogramme of HRH The Princess Astrid, Mrs. Ferner is very similar to that of HRH Princess Alexandra, The Hon. Lady Ogilvy with the obvious exception of the crowns.

Default Monogram carved in stone

The monogram of HRH The Prince of Orange is carved in stone. See the entrance of the Prince's private mansion in The Hague (in use as secretariate and to accomodate guests to Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima).

The two sculptures at each side of the stairs show the monogram.
See this picture.

Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, still maintains a monogram even after her re-marriage, but the crown about the "A" has been down-graded from a royal crown to a countess crown.

Old monogram and new monogram

I believe both V and 5 is officially valid, since a monogram H with "normal" 5 in it exists on the Norwegian coins.

Default The Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima

Here you see the combined logo of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima.

An elegant design. You see that the 'M' and the 'W' are mirroring each other.

The same design, is used for their private table linen. (Official table linen contains their official Arms). See picture. You see it is the uncrowned version, most likely to obtain symmetry in the damast tablewear.

Default Alliance monogram Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima

A royal fan from Eindhoven (I do live in Eindhoven, but it is not me) has posted a princely thank you card on a local Eindhoven forum, see link:

Their Royal Highnesses
The Prince of Orange and
Princess Máxima of the Netherlands
express their heartfelt gratitude
for the friendly congratulations
they were pleased to receive
by the occasion of the birthday
of their daughter Alexia.

The card shows the intertwined W and M, topped with a the royal crown.

when does one receive a royal monogram? is it created at birth, or at a certain age? what does the R stand for in Queen Elizabeth's monogram?

The R means Regina for all queen's and queen consorts. The R in the king's name means Rex.
