I have always wondered about these. Many look like oversized versions of Collars of royal orders. Do only mayors in monarchies wear them? Whats there history and what do they mean. Ive seen them in Denmark, Britian, and the Netherlands. Do other countries have them.

There's all kinds of strange protocal in Britain concerning Mayoral Insignia. Also, the High Sherrifs wear them. Penelope Keith was a High Sherrif and wore a huge badge on a red silk collar. Every borough has a Mayor and they wear their chains. The Mayor's wife also gets one. A Lord Mayor's chain is different to a common Mayor too.

I'm not sure if mayors wear them in NZ - I was a belly dancer, and had a picture taken for the newspaper (with about 6 of us in full costume) and the mayor was wearing his red mayoral robes but I cant remember about the chain.
