To bow or curtsey to anyone stationed above you, is a sign of respect to their position, rather than than to the person itself. It is the same mechanism used in the military; one salutes the officer, because he/she is an officer, no matter what you might think of the person. For Obama to bow to the Japanese emporor is simply a matter of good taste, not relinquishing his powers. Because to the the people of Japan, the emporor is God.
Our queen Margrethe has onces told, that by having to follow protocol, it makes things much easier, because everyone knows what to do and help you to do it the right way.

Anne-Marie curtseys to Constantine

On another forum (I don't remember which), there was a video posted of what appears to be a documentary (?) about King Constantine II & Queen Anne-Marie of Greece. It detailed their childhood, meeting, engagement, reign, exile, and family.

During the program, there was a segment showing a meeting between the engaged couple shortly after Constantine ascended. Even though engaged, AM curtseyed to him while greeting him.

In the footage from their wedding, she curtseyed to him as she reached his side at the altar (I am assuming this is the last time she ever curtseyed to him, as after the ceremony she was queen).

Also, just after the ceremony, his mother greeted the couple. The new Queen Anne-Marie, probably out of habit but possibly also out of respect, curtseyed to Queen Frederike. In addition, Queen Frederike curtseyed to the new queen of Greece at the same time.

She is in such amazing shape. If I was pregnant and down like that they would need a crane to get me back up. We can give her what maybe 5 months and she will be back in her normal clothes looking like she never had twins. She is amazing.

Most, but not all, bowed to the Queen. So it's optional in Denmark? Mary did, but Frederik did not!

It's been suggested (by one of our Danish members I believe) that Frederik and Joachim tend to present a more informal display between themselves and their parents as it's what people generally like to see. Familial affection.

That said, Frederik does, and has, bowed his head to his mother on many occasions.

Frederick, Joachim and Princess Benedikte did not bow or curtsy, but they are blood relatives. I suppose that makes a difference?

I've always wondered if brothers and sisters of a monarch would bow or curtsey? How about the parents of monarchs? Example the Queen Mother to Queen Elizabeth.

I believe the Queen Mother curtsied to Elizabeth, ever so frugally, upon her succession and again at her coronation, but that was it.
