i hope this is a new topic! mods, feel free to merge this with an existing thread is there is one.;)

i became interested in this since they are always given honorary degrees, and i was delighted to find out recently that one of our universities, the University of Sto. Tomas (www.ust.edu.ph) has given honorary doctorates to two royals. they were:

1974 - HRH Prince Juan Carlos de Borbon, Doctor of Laws
Dr. Cristobal Martinez Bordiu, Doctor of Medical Sciences (I'm assuming he is related to Carmen Martinez Bordiu...)
info about this: http://www.ust.edu.ph/sitelinks/insideust/geninfo/history.asp

1975 - Duke of Gloucester, Richard Alexander Walter George, Doctor of Fine Arts

i'd like to know what honorary degrees were received by the royals, and where. :)

this thread can include all recent and previous honorary degrees by all royals.

happy posting! :) ;)

He was Carmen Martinez Bordiu's (the mother of Luis Alfonso de Borbon) father, he was married to Franco's (the spanish dictator that put JC in the throne) daugther Carmen.

Crown Prince Filip of Belgium recieved a honorary doctorate from the KULeuven (Catholic University of Louvain) in 2002. I remember that at the time, there was polemic about this doctorate. A lot of newspapers wrote that Filip didn’t deserve the doctorate.

(here are two pictures, one of Filip, one of Mathilde)

http://www.kuleuven.be/patroonsfeest/2002/eredoctoraten.htm
(at the bottom of this page you can see a video, click on eredoctoraat voor Prins Filip, you need quicktime player)
edit : I had some problems opening the video from this page but if you copy and paste the folowing url (http://video.cc.kuleuven.ac.be/dcom/erefilip.mov) directly into your window of quicktime player, it should work fine. The most interesting part of the video starts at about 1:50.

(here is the laudatio and a biography, unfortunately only in dutch)

His father received a similar doctorate from the same university in 1937, and his grandfather, King Haakon, received one in 1943.
