We are not amused"

Queen Victoria

On You Tube there is a clip of an interview with Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. She said she asked her grandmother, Queen Victoria, if she ever said that and the Queen denied it. Its at the very end of this clip

I used that quote with my elementary school students while student teaching last spring, and they found it odd that I would talk about myself in the third person. When I explained who said it, they thought I was even more odd.

My other favorite quote was said by the present British monarch:

"Grief is the price we pay for love".

I don't know the exact occasion, but have been told that it may have been said in reference to 9/11.

There is no truer saying then that. We all don't like to deal with grief but it's part of loving.

"I must ask you to excuse my ugly French. My French is the one spoken in the trenches of 1914"
said by Queen Louise of Sweden to the French presidet Charles de Gaulle at an official dinner in 1963.

"People look at me as if though I were something special. Surely I do not look differently today from how I looked yesterday!"
She made this remark after becoming a queen in 1950, she didn't like being celebrated just because she was a queen.

She is also said to have been carried a card with the text "I am the Queen of Sweden" when visiting London in case she was to be hit by a car so that people would know who she was.

The second quote is positively disturbing. He was a very ruthless and heartless man.

I remember reading first-hand accounts of his raids on Russia, when the said country was under the rule of the Mongol Horde. Scary stuff.

This is one of my favorite royal quotes of all time:

"May those who died rest in peace, and may we,each and every one one of us,thank God for someone who made many many people happy."

Queen Elizabeth II on Princess Diana.

If the Queen wrote that line, she is so great with words. The entire speech is so well written and wise.

Call me Diana, not Princess Diana.

Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.

Don't call me an icon. I'm just a mother trying to help.

Everyone needs to be valued. Everyone has the potential to give something back.

Everyone of us needs to show how much we care for each other and, in the process, care for ourselves.

Family is the most important thing in the world.

Helping people in need is a good and essential part of my life, a kind of destiny.

HIV does not make people dangerous to know, so you can shake their hands and give them a hug : Heaven knows they need it.

Hugs can do great amounts of good - especially for children.

I adore him... I have never been so happy. I have real love.

I am all about caring. I have always been like that.

I am not a political figure, nor do I want to be one; but I come with my heart.

I don't even know how to use a parking meter, let alone a phone box.

I don't go by the rule book... I lead from the heart, not the head.

I don't want expensive gifts; I don't want to be bought. I have everything I want. I just want someone to be there for me, to make me feel safe and secure.

I felt compelled to perform - to do my engagements and not let people down. And they supported me, although they weren't aware how much it carried me through.

I have a woman's instinct and it's always a good one.

I know it's just a job they have to do, but sometimes I do wish they wouldn't.

I know that I can give love for a minute, for half an hour; for a day, for a month, but I can give and I'm very happy to do that and I want to do that.

I like to be a free spirit. Some don't like that, but that's the way I am.

I live for my sons. I would be lost without them.

I love to hold people's hands when I visit hospitals, even though they are shocked because they haven't experienced anything like it before, but to me it is a normal thing to do.

I remember when I used to sit on hospital beds and hold people's hands, people used to be shocked because they'd never seen this before. To me it was quite normal.

I think like any marriage, especially when you've had divorced parents like myself; you want to try even harder to make it work.

I think the biggest disease the world suffers from in this day and age is the disease of people feeling unloved. I know that I can give love for a minute, for half an hour, for a day, for a month, but I can give. I am very happy to do that, I want to do that.

I understand people's suffering, people's pain, more than you will ever know yourself.

I want my boys to have an understanding of people's emotions, their insecurities, people's distress, and their hopes and dreams.

I want to walk into a room, be it a hospital for the dying or a hospital for the sick children, and feel that I am needed. I want to do, not just to be.

I wear my heart on my sleeve.

I will fight for my children on any level so they can reach their potential as human beings and in their public duties.

I wish all the mothers, fathers and children out there realize how much I need them and how much I value their support.

I'd like people to think of me as someone who cares about them.

I'd like to be a queen in people's hearts but I don't see myself being queen of this country.

I'm as thick as a plank.

I'm aware that people I have loved and have died and are in the spirit world looking after me.

I've got to have a place where I can find peace of mind.

If I am to care for people in hospital I really must know every aspect of their treatment and to understand their suffering.

If men had to have babies, they would only ever have one each.

If you find someone you love in your life, then hang on to that love.

It is a weakness that I lead from my heart, and not my head?

It's not sissy to show your feeling.

Life is just a journey.

My first thoughts are that I should not let people down, that I should support them and love them.

No one sat me down with a piece of paper and said, "This is what is expected of you. But... I'm lucky enough in the fact that I have found my role... I love being with people."

Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society. It is a goal and an essential part of my life - a kind of destiny. Whoever is in distress can call on me. I will come running wherever they are.

Only do what your heart tells you.

People think that at the end of the day a man is the only answer. Actually, a fulfilling job is better for me.

Perhaps we're too embarrassed to change or too frightened of the consequences of showing that we actually care. But why not risk it anyway? Begin Today. Carry out a random act of seemingly senseless kindness, with no expectation or reward or punishment. Safe in the knowledge that one day, someone somewhere might do the same for you.

So many people supported me through my public life and I will never forget them.

The biggest disease this day and age is that of people feeling unloved.

The greatest problem in the world today is intolerance. Everyone is so intolerant of each other.

The kindness and affection from the public have carried me through some of the most difficult periods, and always your love and affection have eased the journey.

The people that I care about are the people out there on the street. I can identify with them.

There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.

They say it is better to be poor and happy than rich and miserable, but how about a compromise like moderately rich and just moody?

This boy is dead now, I knew it before taking him in my arms, I can remember his face, his suffering, his voice.

What must it be like for a little boy to read that daddy never loved mummy?

When you are happy you can forgive a great deal.

Whoever is in the distress can call me. I will come running wherever they are.

Yes, I do touch. I believe that everyone needs that.

You can't comfort the afflicted with afflicting the comfortable.

she's just touch my feeling...

Some lovely quotes by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark from the fantastic book Om man så må sige which is filled with 350 of QMII's quotes (rough translation from Danish):

"I don't draw that damn well." (Danish: Så helvedes godt tegner jeg jo heller ikke.)

"I don't think that one should always follow the latest fashion - whether it's about sweaters or opinions." (Danish: Jeg synes ikke, at man skal løbe efter dagens mode, hverken når det gælder sweatre eller meninger.)

"Presumably everyone wish to be a fly on the wall sometimes. Provided that no one come and bash you off of course." (Danish: Alle ønsker sig vel indimellem at være en flue på væggen. Forudsat altså at der ikke kommer nogen og basker til en.)

"I'm not one of those exercise-geeks; that would be a shame to say." (Danish: Jeg er ikke sådan en motions-nørd; det ville være synd at sige.)
