Duchess of Windsor: 'you can never be to rich or too thin'. ;-)
Actually Sean, this quote is from Babe Paley, the famous American socialite. The Duchess had a cushion embroidered with this sentence though, and it was thus associated with her. :)

'The princess will appear how God and I created her' Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands after somebody suggested that her daughter, crownprincess Juliana might use some make-up for a speech on television.

'Nur ein Deutscher darf sie bekommen' (Only a german may she get), emperor Wilhelm II about the marital prospects of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.

'One doesnt want to keep travelling gentleman waiting' Queen Wilhelmina's icy reply to a minister who offered his resignation, BUT expected that the queen would ask him to stay on.

'Yes, yes, we are strong people who do not cry' Queen Wilhelmina to her daughter Juliana on the day of prince Hendrik's burial (Wilhelmina's husband, Juliana's father), only a few months after the death of Wilhelmina's beloved mother Queen Emma.

'What was and is will also in the future be' Queen Wilhelmina in 1918, after an unsuccesfull revolution attempt by the socialists.

Favourite Royal Quotes

I love the dry wit of many members of the various royal families. My favourite is attributed to Diana: “They say it is better to be poor and happy than rich and miserable, but how about a compromise like moderately rich and just moody?”

What are your favourite royal quotes?

"Bugger Bognor" was apparantly the last thing George V said which I quite like. He also said, "I do knight buggers" when asked to invest a well known homosexual with a knighthood. I find that hilarious seeing as his son was a raving nancy having an affair with one of the biggest gay icons of the early 20th century. Then of course, there's the Duchess of Windsor, "One can never be too rich or too thin" which I think is wonderful. Princess Margaret's "I suppose I'll be known as Charley's Aunt" on the birth of the Prince of Wales is quite delicious and anything by Queen Mary is entertaining and inspiring.

Prince Charles once said, "The things I do for England."

I remember Charles Laughton, portraying Henry VIII stated that in the movie of the same name.

"The important thing is not what they think of me, but what I think of them"
(Queen Victoria)

"It's like putting a bulb into a lamp. You just hold your bulb and then you... (Makes hand motion) ..you screw it in like that."
(Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark telling journalist how to do a royal wave)

Can you provide the source for the first quote. Thank you.

On the eve of the revolution in Iran, the Shah is quoted as having said:

-Ingratitude is the prerogative of the masses.

-A dictator can kill his people, a sovereign cannot.

The Shah is also quoted to have said something like:

-There is only one sovereign that has never lost his throne and that’s the king of cash!

'I have commited every vice but one and I do not intend to die before I killed a man' -Queen Elisabeth of the Hellenes, born Princess of Roumania.

"Quem quer rainhas, paga-as!" ("If you want a Queen, pay for it!"). This famous quote of Queen Maria Pia of Portugal (*1847 +1911), née Princess of Savoy, was an answer to one of her ministers, who admonished her for spending too much money on clothes and other extravances...

How about something juicy from a couple of royal mistresses?

On an official event which the countess of Warwick, mistress of Edward VII attended as a guest, someone announced: "the king is coming". The countess in a stage whisper: " Well that'll be a first"

Another witty mistress of Edward VII was Lillie Langtry. On his remark: "I have spent enough on you to buy a battleship" she replied: " You have spent enough time in me to float a battleship"

 Now they are quite brilliant. Just wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

When King Georg IV who had a terrible marriage with Caroline of Brunswick, was informed of Napoleons death with the words: "Sir, your greatest enemy is dead" he replied: " By God, dead, is she?"

George IV actually tried to divorce Caroline on the grounds of adultery.
At the notorious trial, The Queen said: "It is quite true, I committed adultery with the husband of Mrs. Fitzherbert" (refering to the first, however inofficial and morganatic and thus never officially disolved marriage of her husband King George IV and Mrs. Fitzherbert)

Rather Queen for a day, than a Duchess all my life ("Antes rainha um dia, que duquesa toda a vida") - D.ª Luísa de Gusmão (*1613 +1666), Queen of Portugal.

It is said that D.ª Luísa de Gusmão, being warned of the dangers of becoming Queen of a country that was to face Spain, pronounced this famous sentence. Real or not, it perfectly states the strong character of D.ª Luísa, who is considered the main influence behind her husband's (the 8th Duke of Bragança) acceptation to start the 4th dinasty.

Its pretty easy to find, just type in "queen victoria quotes" and it should come up. It's a very pompous quote isn't it :)

Australian:

Thanks for the link. I will check it out.

As for the quote, I rather liked it. Not to be too metaphysical, but the quote said to me if ones dislikes another that person is holding on to negative energy, which interferes with the pursuit of happiness. And one cannot change or control what another thinks about them; and therefore, to do so is pointless as it is again taking on negative energy.

I don't have a favorite royal quote but one I have heard a lot, especially when talking about Diana and her Divorce (went something like this) 'there were 3 of us in the marriage and it got a bit crowded. I think this quote with always be associated Diana's divorce.

One of my favorite quotes, bar-none came from the Queen Mother. She was being escorted somewhere by Noel Coward (who was gay) and he took notice of the guards standing around and she said, "I wouldn't if I were you, Noël; they count them before they put them out."

Portugal is mine, because I inherited it, because I paid for it and because I conquered it! - King Felipe II of Spain / Filipe I of Portugal.

After fighting for his rights over the vacant throne of Portugal (due to the dead of D. Sebastião, in the battle of Alcácer Quibir), the head of the Spanish Habsburgs proferred this assertive sentence... no wonder that people were still crying out in Portugal: “we do not have a king, and his letters and provisions are now being exchanged for money"!!

The king can do whatever he wants, but not with my consent! - Catherine of Bragança (*1638 +1705), Queen of England and Scotland.

After marrying King Charles II of England, Catherine was pressured to choose her husband's favourite mistress, Barbara Palmer, as her lady-in-waiting, but the Queen refused to accept it, by saying this famous phrase.

look around minute 4, she touches his arm like scolding him!

At the time, it caused quite an uproar but now is like a "royal blooper":lol::lol:

Some more great quotes from the Queen Mother....she was a witty lady.

"When one of you young queens has finished, can you bring this old queen a drink?" (she said this to members of her staff, who were largely gay)

"Was this yours? Oh, could you take it?" (after someone threw a roll of toilet paper at her)

"Oh, I understand that perfectly. That's how we feel in Scotland too, but the English won't allow it." (after an Afrikaner in South Africa said they didn't like royalty and thought that S.A. should become a republic)

Also from the Queen Mother:
'Edwina always liked a splash', she was reported to have said while drinking a glass of champagne and looking to the seamans funeral of Edwina Mountbatten.

"I wasn't born to dance, but to make others dance" - Napoléon Bonaparte (*1769 +1821), Emperor of France, refusing to dance a waltz.

Se eu fosse o rei, mandava-o fuzilar! ("If I was the king, I would order his shooting!") - Queen Maria Pia of Portugal (*1847 +1911), née Princess of Savoy.

After the coup of Marshal Saldanha, who surrounded the Palace, compelling King D. Luís I to make him head of the government, it is said that the Queen replied with this famous sentence.

No tan ayna, no tan ayna... ("Not so fast, not so fast...") - Infanta Isabel of Castile (*1451 +1504), answering to the marriage proposal of king D. Afonso V of Portugal, in 1469.
