It seems that many royals do interships at various diplomatic organizations as part of their preparation for their future roles. For instance,
In October/November 1999, Crown Prince Haakon was a member of the Norwegian delegation at the UN General Assembly.
While Crown Princess Victoria was studying at Yale, she did two interships at the UN and one at the Swedish Embassy, among other things.
What other "prep" work have royals done?

Infanta Cristina of Spain studied for a Master's degree in International Relations at New York University and in 1991 gained practical experience working at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

In 2003 Princess Caroline of Monaco became a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. She was chosen for the role in recognition of her personal commitment to the protection of children and the family(she's AMADE's President since 1983).
