Wow, that's a long wait for Joachim and Alexandra.

Is it the trend that Crown Princely couples (those who need to have heirs) have their first child sooner (like the very next year), because Charles and Diana and the other couples listed above did not wait as long as Joachim & Alex and Edward & Sophie?

that is true--after she delivered Princess Beatrice, her doctor advised her to have no more children. Her often quoted response was: "Can I no longer have fun in bed??" :p

So much for Queen Victoria being a prude!! I think Albert was the prude! :p

My guess is that most of these couples, who got their children 3 or 4 years after the wedding had fertility problems or miscarriages. I might be wrong here, but hadn´t crown princess Sonja a miscarriage before she got Märtha-Louise?

Some royal couples have just waited. Princess Anne of Great Britain did not want to have a child until after she competed in the 1976 Olympic games as an Equestrienne--so she put her plans on hold for 3 years to train and compete. In 1977, she had her first child Peter. Zara followed in 1981.

The Duke and Duchess of York waited--when was the Duke ever home to conceive a kid??
