Queen Juliana was very popular in Italy too. Once I saw a picture of her washing her laundry while she was spending the summmer holidays at Argentario (TuscanY)

It is rather funny, considering she never got engaged to the chap (when the negocciations failed the dutch ambassador to London, who had to arrange the thing, was taken ill to bed for two weeks). In Holland people were however akmost certain about the engagement, photographs were placed in shopwindows, songs like these were made and small books/articles were written about Carl (who is the brother of Crownprincess Martha of Norway and Queen Astrid of the Belgians). The funny thing about the song is that it already is wrning Juliana, not to let the guy slip, which was exactly what she did. Note that the song affectionally refers to 'Juliaantje' as if they were referring to family, I remember my grandmother usually calling her that way as well.
I believe Wilhelmina blamed it on a danish/norwegian/greek conspiracy, headed by Queen Maud of Norway. At other times the belgian King and Queen were suspected, because they wanted the younger brother of the King Prince Karel) to marry Juliana. In reality Carl didn't care much for Juliana and Juliana didn't care the least for him (she found him to childish, and even according to the dutch ambassador in Sweden, the swedish princes were only interested in cars, parties and women) but for Peter of Greece, who was unsuitable as his great-grandfather owned a casino in Monte Carlo. The dutch ambassador to London later even admitted that Juliana went out of her ways to behave aloof and haughty to the swedish Prince. I wonder if she later on regretted on her decission...

Now three more pictures from www.hetgeheugenvannederland.nl:
The first picture shows Princess Juliana holding her youngest daughter Marijke and surrounded by her mother, Queen Wilhelmina and her 3 other daughters. ![]() During the second worldwar pictures of the RF were made and dropped out of Allied airplanes, to raise the spirits in the Netherlands. This picture shows Juliana, Bernhard and their 3 eldest daughters in Ottawa: ![]() This one shows the arrival of the small princesses at airport Teuge, in 1945, after the war. A journalist tried to put a microphone under the nose of Princess Beatrix, who replied ' I don't like those things' (Ik hou niet van die dingen).

Wonderful pictures Marengo! The Royal Dutch National Library has digitised some great high quality pics of the RF. I spent days last summer just going through some of them - I must admit I have a weakness for pics of the four princesses while growing up! Thanks for posting these pics!

Thanks Squidgy, I have to confess the same weakness and addiction (for the moment as I am enjoying my photobucket).
Here a picture from Corbis of Queen Juliana surrounded by Crownprince Olav of Norway, Eleonor Roosevelt (such a wonderful woman & a personal friend of Juliana), Crownprincess Martha of Norway and a gentleman whose name I do not know.

Another lovely pic from the dusty Corbis vaults showing a very regal Juliana; sans tiara, but furred, fanned, sashed and bejewelled.
Queen Juliana

looking at this portrait, her character is clearly visible: a dreamer, someone who loves to communicate, but also not to play games with.. she knows what she wants and you wont get rid of her easy..

And with a nice haircut to I must add! She certainly had her glamorous moments! I wish they still used fans like that, it seems so theatrical!

I'm so glad you discovered photobucket, Marengo! These pictures are priceless! Juliana was such a warm and lovely queen!!! And thanks for telling us about the history with Juliana and prince Carl. I really love to learn about these things, because I don't know much about the pas history of our royal family, though I'm highly interested in it. Maybe I should go and see if the library of my university has some books about them. :)

You should definately get the biography by Prof. Fasseur about Wilhelmina, it is excellent! The search for a husband for both Wilhelmina and especially for Juliana was so difficult and hilarious (for today's reader). And Wilhelmina of course was an exceptional woman...

Thanks for the tip, Marengo! I will surely get that one and read it. I just did a little search in the search option of the library of the university (Don't you just love the internet?) and they got three things of Fasseur on Wilhelmina: 'Wilhelmina: krijgshaftig in een vormeloze jas' (interesting title
), 'Wilhelmina: de jonge koningin' (inspired by one of my favourite movies, Sissi, die junge Kaiserin?

Well, here is a shocker: It's all three of them...
The first, Wilhelmina, de jonge koningin is around 600 pages, and stops after WWI, the second volume 'krijgshaftig in een vormeloze jas' is the rest of her life, also around 600 pages. The other book is much smaller and contains anecdotes/information Fasseur didn't mention in the first two books. Fasseur writes very well, though the biography is highly political, which can be boring at times (How Wilhelmina treats her ministers is fun to read btw, she wasn't to be trifled with).
