June 7, 1945- today (still in Canada for a few more hours) is the 75th anniversary of the return of King Haakon VII of Norway to his country after the end of WWII. He was accompanied by his daughter in law Martha and her three children. Their entrance into Oslo that day marked the 5 year anniversary of their evacuation. CP Olav had already returned to the country in May. He wanted his father to wait to return until the city was more secure.

During those five years the family had been divided. Haakon and Olav had spent the time in the UK working with the government in exile. Martha, who after a short time in Sweden, took her children to the US (The Swedish people thought her presence but their neutrality in danger). Martha was a guest of the White House. Martha became very close to President Roosevelt. She worked tirelessly for the people of Norway during her exile. She earned the title the Mother of the nation for her work and devotion to her people during those years. She received a heroes welcome when she returned home with her father in law and her children.

The weather was miserable but more people then the population of Oslo turned out on the streets to welcome them home.

Harald was 3 when they went into exile, and 8 when they returned home. He attended Whitehall school in Bethesda from 1943 until his return home.

His sisters were 8 and 10 at the time of exile, 13-15 at their return.

June 15, 1184- death of Magnus V of Norway.

Magnus holds the distinction of being the first Scandinavian ruler crowned.

Magnus was born in 1156 and was the son of Erling Skakke. His father was known for his crusades with the Earl of Orkney (he got his nickname which means slanted when his neck was cut by an Arab warrior which caused him to tilt his head to the side after). His mother Kristina was the daughter of Sigurd I Magnusson (known as the crusader) who was king of Norway from 1103-1130.

Erling had served as guardian and later advisor to Inge I of Norway during the war between Inge and his brothers (and later their supporters). When Inge died in 1161 he managed to have his son Magnus elected as the new king, at the age of 5. He was crowned 2 years later in 1163. Since he was a minor his father was the power behind the throne. His father became an earl and continued to be the real power behind the throne even when Magnus came of age.

In 1166 he faced his first opposition to his throne in the form of Olav Ugjæva. Olav was the grandson of Eystein I of Norway through his mother. He and his foster father Sigurd Agnhatt raised forces to have him made king while Magnus' father was away in Denmark. Erling was ambushed and almost killed on his return. Olav and his foster father's forces were defeated though in 1168 at the Battle at Stanger. Sigurd was killed but Olav escaped to Denmark where he fell ill and died the following year.

In 1177 Sverre Sigurdsson arrived and laid a claim to the throne. Erling fell in battle in 1179. His son remained on the throne until he was defeated and killed in the Battle of Fimreite. Sverre claimed to be the son of Sigurd II of Norway (though that was highly debatable, he is more likely the son of his mother's husband).

Magnus was married. His wife was Estrid Bjørnsdotter. Estrid's mother Rangrid Guttormsdotter, was possibly the descendent of Tostig Godwinson (bother of King Harold Godwinson of England).

The couple had one son Sigurd. Sigurd was backed as king by the lords of Orkney and Shetland who became known as the Eyjarskeggjar. The real power of the men though was Hallkjell Jonsson. Hallkjell was a son in law of Erling so would have been Magnus' brother in law and Sigurd's Uncle by marriage. In 1194 Sigurd was killed in the battle of Florvag along with Hallkjell and most of his men. Over 2500 men were killed on both sides.

July 4, 1799 birth of King Oscar I of Sweden.

Oscar was born in Paris. His birth name was Joseph Francois Oscar Bernadotte. His father, the future Charles XIV John of Sweden was at the time Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, minister of war to Napoleon. His mother Desiree Clary was a former fiancé of Napoleon. Joseph was in honor of his godfather Joseph Bonaparte who was married to his Aunt Julie Clary. Francois would have been a nod to his maternal grandfather Francois Clary. Oscar was chosen by emperor Napoleon for a character in the Ossian cycle of poems. Napoleon also served as one of his godfathers, chosen by his mother.

On August 21, 1816 Oscar's father was elected heir to the Swedish throne and was officially adopted by the childless Charles XIII November 5 of the same year, under the name Charles John. At the time Joseph was named a Prince of Sweden, with the HRH and Duke of Sodermanland. He and his mother moved from Paris to Stockholm June of the following year. Oscar acclimated to his new home quickly, picking up Swedish easily. His mother did not, she hated the weather and left later that summer and would not return back until 1823.

He became crown prince in 1818 on the death of his adoptive grandfather, when his father succeeded the throne.

Oscar had spent only a semester at Upsala University but he was smart. He wrote papers on education and anonymous one on prison reform. He even helped compose the romantic opera Ryno.

His marriage became an important issue. Wanting to cement their place on the throne, his father looked for the perfect bride for his son. Four women were considered. Wilhelmina of Denmark (daughter of Frederick VI of Denmark who would eventually marry Frederick VII), Marie of Hesse-Kassel (daughter of William II, Elector of Hesse and Augusta of Prussia who eventually married Bernard II of Saxe-Meiningen), and Marie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (daughter of Charles Frederick I of Saxe-Weimar who eventually married Prince Charles of Prussia) were all considered.

The choice fell eventually on Josephine of Leuchtenberg Josephine's father Eugène Rose de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg was the stepson of Emperor Napoleon (he was Empress Josephine's son by her first marriage to Alexandre Beauharnais). Her mother was Princess Augusta of Bavaria. She was the eldest of seven children. Her siblings included Empress Amelie of Brazil (wife of Pedro I).

They were married by proxy at her family estate in Munich May 22, 1823 and then in person in Stockholm June 19.

His father worried that he was too liberal, Oscar having sided with the opposition against his father's despotic behavior. He succeeded the throne at 44 March 8, 1844. He established freedom of the press. He introduced gender equality in inheritance, that if there was no will, daughters inherited an equal share to brothers. He established equality between the two kingdoms of Norway and Sweden.

By the 1850s his health deteriorated. He became paralyzed in 1857 and died two years later in the royal palace of Stockholm July 8, 1859. He had celebrated his 60th birthday only 4 days before. His eldest son had been serving as regent for the past two years due to his absence.

Josephine would outlive her husband by 17 years, dying in 1876. Unlike her husband, Josephine received a catholic funeral.

The couple had five children:

-Carl: succeeded his father as Charles XV, third Bernadotte king but first born in Sweden. He was 33 when he succeeded. He married Princess Louise of the Netherlands (granddaughter of William I of the Netherlands, her father was his second son). They had two children, but he was succeeded by his younger brother as his only son died before his second birthday. His daughter Louise would be Queen of Denmark by marriage to Frederick VIII.

-Gustaf- Duke of Upland. He died of typhoid just short of his 25th birthday five years before his father died.

-Oscar- succeeded Charles XV as Oscar II in 1872 at 43. He was married to Sophia of Nassau (daughter of Wilhelm, Duke of Nassau). They had four sons, oldest one succeeded him as Gustaf V.

-Eugenie- died at 69 unmarried. She was an artist and philanthropist.

-August- Duke of Dalarna. He married Princess Therese Amalie of Saxe-Altenburg (daughter of Prince Eduard of Saxe-Altenburg.). Their marriage was childless. He died 9 years later of pneumonia at the age of 41.

Many of the jewels we see on the royal women today came into Sweden through Josephine.

He was actually the Emperor's son, since Napoléon adopted his stepchildren and per the French imperial house law they shared the rank of imperial prince or princess.

https://www.heraldica.org/topics/france/eugene.htm

Following the fall of Napoleon, Eugen settled in his wife's native Bavaria, acquired the duchy of Leuchtenberg and principality of Eichstädt, and was created a Royal Highness by his father-in-law the king of Bavaria. That did not apply to his children, and there was concern that Josephine did not satisfy the equal marriage law in the Swedish Act of Succession.

September 21, 1957 death of Haakon VII of Norway, grandfather of Harald.

Born Prince Carl of Denmark, he was the last living son of Frederick VIII at the time of his death. Of his 8 siblings he outlived all but Dagmar who died in 1961 and Ingeborg who died less then a year after him in March 1958. Christian X had died ten years earlier in 1947.

His wife Princess Maud of Wales, who he married in 1896, had died almost 19 years earlier in November 1938.

He was succeeded by his 55 year old son Olav V of Norway. Olav was a widow, his wife Martha having died three years earlier.

November 26, 1869 birth of Maud of Wales, Queen of Norway.

Maud was born at Marlborough house in London during the reign of her grandmother Queen Victoria. She was the fifth child and third daughter of her parents the future Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark. Maud Charlotte Mary Victoria was christened December 24 by the bishop of London. Her godparents were the Duke of Albany (her paternal Uncle), Prince Frederick William of Hesse-Kassel (her maternal great-Uncle, he was the brother of Alexandra's mother Louise), Count Gleichen (half-cousin of her father, his mother was Victoria's half sister Feodora), The Duchess of Nassau (her mother's cousin), Charles XV of Sweden, Princess Marie of Leningen (her husband was Victoria's nephew, son of her half-brother Carl), Empress Maria Federovna (her maternal aunt), Queen Louise of Denmark (aunt by marriage, married to Alexandra's brother Frederick VIII) and the Duchess of Inverness (her great grand aunt).

Maud was quite a tomboy and was known as Harry by her family.

She served as a bridesmaid when her Aunt Princess Beatrice was married as well as when her brother George V married Mary of Tech.

She married later then most, in her late twenties. She was married July 22 1896 at nearly 27 years old. Her husband was her first cousin Prince Carl of Denmark. Carl was the second son of her maternal Uncle Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark. The couple were married at Buckingham palace and her father gifted them Appleton house on Sandringham as a country estate when they visited England frequently.

In 1905 her husband was offered the throne of Norway. Her place as a member of the British royal family likely helped her husband's selection.

Her husband became Haakon VII of Norway. The couple were crowned king and queen at Nidaros Cathedral June 22 1906.

Though she loved her home country Maud adapted quite well to Norway and her new role. The couple were often photographed in folk costume and often enjoyed things like skiing.

She was involved in charity work with a lot of focus on children and animals. She over saw the redesign of the royal stables as an avid rider. During WWI she helped to create the Queen's relief committee.

Though she was quite reserved in public she was said to have been lively and have a great sense of humor in private. She never forgot her home and often returned to the UK for visits, and had an English garden planted in Oslo.

Her last appearance in England was at the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She sat with Queen Mary and the Princess royal during.

In October 1938 she made a trip to London where she stayed at a hotel in the West End. She under went surgery on November 16 and her husband came immediately from Norway to be with her. She died from heart failure six days after her 69th birthday which was also the 13th anniversary of the death of her mother. Norway allowed for the breaking of laws against publishing newspapers on Sundays, to announce the death of their queen.

She was returned to Norway on the flagship of the home fleet. She was buried at the royal mausoleum. At the time of her death, she was the last living child of her parents. George who died in 1936 had been the last (Louise died in 1931, Victoria in 1935, Albert Victor in 1892 and Alexander in 1871).

Haakon/Carl would die in 1957.

The couple had one son.

-Alexander/Olav: he was born at Appleton house and was named Alexander. When his father became King of Norway his name was switched to Olav. He succeeded his father as Olav V. He married Princess Martha of Sweden and was father of King Harald and his sisters Ragnhild and Astrid.

Martha lived to see all three of her grandchildren born, Harald born the year before she died. Her husband would live to see the birth of their first two great-grandchildren, the second of whom was born months before he died.
