The ceremony at Stortinget ended about an hour ago, or so. There will be a new transmission tonight, on TV2.

Sun finally smiles on the Centennial

Oslo woke up to clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine on Tuesday, perfect weather to celebrate Norway's 100 years of independence in the country's capital. Thousands of flags flew in the breeze as the city geared for a day of colourful celebration.

Oslo's harbor is full of foreign vessels making courtesy calls, gracious old Tall Ships and a vast array of pleasure craft, with even the ferries that ply the fjord back and forth to the Nesodden peninsula decorated with signal flags.

Sunshine glittered on the deep blue waters of the Oslo Fjord early Tuesday morning as personnel at the ancient fortress that looms over the inner harbor once again fired the canons atop its stone walls. By 8:30am, officers in full dress uniform were milling about the plaza in front of the Oslo City Hall, getting ready to parade down the city's main drag, Karl Johans Gate, at 10am.

Tuesday's celebrations mark Norwegian politicians' decision on June 7, 1905 to break out of a union with Sweden that had existed for most of the 1800s. Before that, Norway had been under Danish rule for around 400 years, so the decision meant the formal beginning of an indendence process that lasted until late November, when Norway established its own monarchy and emerged as a sovereign nation.

The centennial celebrations so far have been marred somewhat by bad weather, financial problems and a general lack of enthusiasm among the population at large. But the festive atmosphere in downtown Oslo on Tuesday and sunny skies for the first time in weeks seemed likely to raise spirits.

Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik was spotted standing in the sunshine on the City Hall plaza near a trailer decked out with Swedish flags and the call letters for Sweden's national broadcasting unit, "Sveriges Television." The Swedish crew took photos of themselves, clearly ready to record the Norwegians' celebration of the end of their former union.

Over on Karl Johan's Gate, meanwhile, military personnel marked off the spaces where soldiers and The King's Guards would line up as King Harald, on his first day back at work, would ride from his palace down to the Parliament for a special mid-morning session to mark the nation's independence. The boulevard was decked out with Norwegian flags along the entire route, with more flags set up all around the parliament and flying atop every building on the street.

The National Theater, midway between the palace and the Parliament, even featured an old flag showing the Swedish colors in an upper corner, known as the "Herring Salad." The theater was decorated with red, white and blue banners, while some irreverent celebrants had tied a pink tutu around the waist of the statue of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, the late statesman best known for writing the country's national anthem.

Festivities were to continue all day, ending with a "party for the people" on the City Hall plaza Tuesday evening.

The King and Queen arrived at Stortinget to grand ovations today :)
