It is surprising that Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the event, did not show her emotions and cried like she did in 2009. EU needed some carrots to feel better.

I was watching parts of the ceremony earlier on the news and they hardly showed and didn't even mention that the Norwegian Royal family were there!

It has always been that way, it's the president of Stortinget (the Norwegian parliament) who gives the prize to the laureates, and the royal family are there only as guests. One reason for that is probably that when it was decided that the peace prize was to be awarded in Oslo Norway was a part of Sweden and royals were not expected to be a part of the ceremony.
