The photo of Baudouin and Fabiola with Pope St. John XXIII is so heartbreaking. Fabiola looks beautiful, almost like a bride, but the tension on her face is palpable. She was in early in her first pregnancy and was about to reveal the news publically.

And then she would suffer the first of her five miscarriages only days later.

King Baudouin attended the funeral of Irish President Erskine Childers in November 1974 at St Patrick's Cathedral

Always happy to see Queen Fabiola and her natural kindness.
She was a problem for the Protocole Service because she stayed always longer than what was organised in the Programm.
Queen Mathilde is a professional Queen with always the same smile.

Ah... wonderful images... when Belgium was still an unitary state with a considerable army, with Sabena, with a Rijkswacht/Gendarmerie, etc. The Belgian royal mounted escort looked bigger (more escadrons/more horses) in 1974 than at present. Interesting that already in 1974 the State Banquet at the Royal Palace was not a white-tie affair: no sashes, no jewels. At 7.25 the presidential couple visited an abbey. How young the monks were!

So to see, President Childers was not Roman-Catholic: the clergy at his funeral looked Anglican to me. The death of President Childers was unexpected. The same happened to King Baudoin. Gentlemanlike from the King to attend the funeral. Of course he hosted Mr and Mrs Childers only a few months earlier.

I never realized that Fabiola was 2 years older than Baudouin until I saw the dates on the tomb and I thought I knew everything about them.

Thank you eya. Baudouin and Fabiola are one of my all time favorite Royal couples...if not my favorite period.

I hope they are blissful together again.

Yes, I vaguely remember how shocked I was to hear on the news here in the US that he had died suddenly while on holiday just short of his 63rd birthday.

The respect for him wasn't confined to Europe. After JFK's State funeral he is one of the world leaders that the new president Lyndon Johnson met with for the longest at the State Department reception that followed, and Ronald Reagan in his Presidential diaries that were published last year described his meeting with Baudouin of the Belgians and how impressed he had been with how "gracious" His Majesty was.

President Clinton sent two ex-presidents to Baudouin's funeral. One was Gerald Ford and I cannot remember the other one.
