The elegant lady next to the Queen, with the silver chain, is the new Mayor of Maastricht. An iron fist in a velvet glove. She was one of the highest crimefighters (prosecutor-general) before she became appointed Mayor. The first one not belonging to any political party since the Reign of King Willem III. The Mayor's husband is a retired chief-surgeon, her grandfather was a mayor as well and her other grandfather an industrialist in Brabant. "Us knows us". See the Princess and the Mayor holding hands: picture.

And a wonderful classy lady at that. She used to be my boss before she became prosecutor-general. Most people here were very happy when she became mayor.

In the Dutch system the Mayor -not elected but appointed by the Crown- has a sort "above the parties"-position. It is interesting that it took so long before finally somewhere an independent Mayor has been appointed and then -remarkably- not in a little municipality but in a city as Maastricht. Wonderful. Hope the dude who fainted when the Princess left the theatre is well.

It appears that he tripped and fell and left on his own afterwards, not needing an ambulance.

In older days not so long ago maybe the royal in question would have turned and asked "Are you okay, sir?" but these days the security will take no risk and urge the royals to move on.

Has this been Princess Beatrix's first US trip since her abdication?

On November 27th Princess Beatrix will open the exposition 'Spanish Masters from the Hermitage. The world of El Greco, Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo and Goya'. Hopefully also Queen Sofía of Spain will attend. Like Queen Sonja of Norway did recently for the Edvard Munch exhibition in Amsterdam. Or like President Medvedev did for the Exposition "Splendour of the Tsars" in Amsterdam (see picture).

To nip gossip in the bud before it turns up here
apparently german magazine "Aktuelle" tried to come up with a new boyfriend for P.Beatrix, but no, it's not true:

(i thought it was a nice story, and pics aren't bad either)

It seems that the man is happily married and has been so for over 60 years. He said that he made a small joke, and the moment the princess had to laugh the camera's snapped and Aktuelle had their story.

The 2015 Johannes Vermeer Award, the Dutch national prize for the arts, was awarded to the Dutch composer Michel van der Aa today, October 26. Princess Beatrix attended the ceremony in Den Haag:

Why in London? Surely there are clinics in the Netherlands where the operation could take place.

This evening, November 6, Princess Beatrix attended the Opera Gala of the National Opera & Ballet in Amsterdam marking the 50th anniversary of the National Opera:

It is clear the former Queen is bathing herself in culture, music, dance, theatre, opera, etc. since she abdicated. She seems enjoying her new life to the fullest.

HRH Princess Beatrix attends the opening of the Mulitdisciplinair Centrum Kindermishandeling (Child abuse) Kennemerland (MDCK) in Hoofddorp on November 18th.
