Today the NOS (the Dutch equivalent of the BBC) insinuated that Queen Beatrix never wanted major maintenance (because of hindrance) at Huis ten Bosch Palace, her private residence. Therefore the palace is now "in poor state".

This is pure rubbish. The NOS themselves reported about the extensive (and expensive) restoration of the Orange Hall, the central hall of the palace. This lasted for years. So the statement "Queen Beatrix did not want builders over her floor" is simply and factual untrue. The maintenance is mainly about technical installations (lead pipes for water, un-earthed electric wiring, asbestos in some parts, etc.). Here and there historic artefacts like the centuries-old silk curtains of the Chinese salon need restoration. In my book all this is normal for a 17th C building after 30 years of intensive use.

What is that with media these days. Grrrr....

IF it is untrue, I suppose it serves a purpose: namely showing that the present maintanance is long overdue and that the royal family has been frugal all these years. I suppose that it is possible that HRH may not have wanted major renovations in the private wing.

It is factually untrue as there have been loads of builders on the floor for the Orange Hall, but even when Queen Beatrix did not want builders in her private appartments, the owner of the palace, the Rijksgebouwendienst, could have enforced a restoration, for an example via the Prime Minister insisting that maintenance MUST be done.

I think NOS is just making hullabaloo again. I am sure that Her Majesty knew the palace was in need of maintenance but -in agreement with the Rijksgebouwendienst and with knowledge of the Prime Minister- decided to delay it "for a more suitable moment".

:)

In any way, it indeed also portrays the Queen as someone who does not want all these costs to be made for her, "frugal" with taxpayers' money.

It is wonderful that all is well and harmonious again between Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and her niece Princess Margarita de Bourbon de Parme. Wonderful to see the two ladies enjoying an evening out.

HRH Princess Beatrix will be in attendance at the dinner of the Trilateral Academic Centre for European Studies at the German Foreign Office, Berlin,Germany tonight sunday february 8th.

If IRCC,the Centre for European Studies once occupied a wing of Noordeinde Palace under the Reign of Queen Juliana who didn't use the palace all that often anyway.

Richard Freiherr von Weiszäcker and Axel Freiherr von dem Bussche-Streithorst were best friends all their life long, from adolescent times on. Axel was related to Prince Claus's mother, Gösta von Amsberg, Freiin von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen. (He was also a godfather to the late Prince Friso). It was via this cousin Axel that Prince Claus became acquainted with Richard von Weiszäcker, way before he became a public figure.

I hope Princess Beatrix has taken the possibility to visit the Hohenzollern Crypt under the Dom, where also (descandants of) Orange-Nassaus are interred. The crypt is brand new (1960's) and sadly this shows, it has no any eerie-ness, feeling of death, of loss and sadness. Just a clinical souterrain full of coffins saved out of the ruins of the heavily damaged Berliner Dom.

The Princess,Patron, will attend the 140th anniversary of the King Willem Fund in London on april 25th.After a service at the Dutch Church,Austin Friars,City of London, the Princess will attend the reception at the Carpenters Hall.

The Koning Willem Fund was a gift at the 25th Jubilee of the Reign of King Willem III by Dutch living in the UK at the time.

The Fund provides practical and moral support to those Dutch and their families living in the UK at present who need special assistance of any kind in order to get their means of existance back on track.
