Here is another article I found. It is also a little older but concerns a few people who keep poping up in important functions (or have been) in Monaco. This might also explain why Albert, inspite of some of them (like Biancheri) being entangled in not so kosher affairs, keeps hanging on to them. La diaspora business du nouveau Monaco

yes, little older, Mr Allavena is gone... (nov. 2006?) but thanks...

Todays paper has a long and I mean very long message from Albert to the Monegasque. You can read it in Monaco matin or here Monaco.maville.com - Albert II : «La prospérité de Monaco ne peut se gagner sans efforts»

I haven't read it yet, so can't comment. But Yesterday Angela Merkkel did the same after her first 2 years as chancelor, only an hour later the opposition gave their point of view on the matter which was a little different from her picture.
Paca, thanks for the article! It should be interesting to read, especially with everything that’s happening right now in Monaco’s government. However, the link that you provided is the second part of the article, which continues with Albert speech. One should first read the beginning of the article on page 7. Here’s the link. The beginning has a commentary from Hervé Mari and the beginning of Albert’s speech. Also here's a site with translating software.

Also, last night Albert attended a celebration in honor of Henri Salvador’s 90th birthday.

Henri Salvador fete ses 90 ans en compagnie du Prince Albert de Monaco et de Yves Piaget sur la scene de la Salle des Etoiles au Sporting Club de Monaco. Monte-Carlo,

Here’s a gallery of pictures from Isifa

yes you are right, the link was only the second page but you get easily to the first part from there.

I heard and saw the fireworks for Henri Salvador yesterday. It would have surprised me if he didn't go. He has known him for a very longtime. I believe he was friendly with Rainier. There will be anotherone tonight I believe and todays paper says that he might retire from stage, but that is just a rumour and someone performing at this age will probably perform till his last breath IMO. Only major healthproblems can keep that type of personality home and he looks to me quite well considering. Reminds me a bit of those guys from Buena Vista social club...must be the type of music they are playing that keeps them in shape... ;) :D

There is also on Monaco info a status quo. Plus a video with Henri Salvador.Centre de Presse

It seems that some people are under the impression that the message was delivered in a different country. To my knowledge and understanding that was not the case. Yes he went yesterday to visit Sarkozy, who is expected to return the favour, but he did not give a speech. They simply talked for about 40 minutes. Rainier often had messages published in the paper. Since most locals read the paper but not necessarily watch TMC or the info channel, it is the best way to reach the people. It's Monaco and things are done differently here. But if you read carefully, you can tell a little what is going on behind the scenes. It also seems as if he is a little shocked by what has been going on back home while he was circling te globe. Maybe a reason why he is mostly close by in recent months...

Here are more pictures of Prince Albert liberating Igor, the sea turtle from Foto S.A. gallery.

Here’s a short story about Igor from online Monaco Times:
Happy end for Monaco turtle
Prince Albert II waves Igor goodbye as he returns to the ocean

Monaco's smallest and wettest celebrity made a big splash yesterday, as he left town in style to return home. Igor the tortoise become famous a few weeks ago when he was found in the port, but now he's back in his natural environment. The caouanne turtle (the species most commonly found in the Mediterranean sea) was glimpsed by a fisherman in the port this June, and immediately taken into the care of the Principality’s Oceanographic Museum.
Pampered by the team at the museum for more than a month and a half, Igor is now home thanks to Maud Fontenoy who was one of Igor's most eager carers. Prince Albert II, an enthusiastic conservationist, made sure he was there to wish the small survivor good luck.

Seven miles off the coast, Ms Fontenoy and a team of divers released Igor back into the ocean, and reported that as soon as he hit the water he was off – they didn’t even have time to take a photo.

Here are non-watermarked pictures of the celebration in honor of Henri Salavador. Pic1, Pic2, Pic3, Pic4, Pic5. I really like these pictures because of Prince Albert and Henri's expressions and laughter (Pic6, Pic7, Pic8).

Also, here's a Deadline gallery of more pictures (click on the magnifying glass twice to maximize photo).

Another news (there might be some pics): Albert has visited the incinerator. There is a huge article in todays paper. Part of it can be found here Monaco.maville.com - Le prince Albert II visite l'usine de retraitement des déchets

In the paper there is sth about a petition to close it and another article about it.
In addition, here's a link to a video of Albert's visit to the incinerator. If it doesn't come up automatically, select from the actualities tab, the movie VISITE USINE SMA.wmv under date 19 juillet.

Prince Albert inaugurated today a Red Cross photo Exposition of his mother’s involvement in the Red Cross. The exposition will be showing from 20 July to 19 August 2007. Here’s a video of the inauguration which includes some photos from the exhibit. Prince Albert comes to Desiré’s rescue. Now the baby whale has a name and a Prince has come to her rescue.:) Here are two pictures. Abaca and Newscom have a gallery of underwater pictures of Desiré (but no pictures of Prince Albert). The caption is great. Also, here’s a press release that was sent out (in French).

CAPTION: Prince Albert II, who as President of his own environmental protection foundation (Fondation Prince Albert II) is personally following progress on the situation of a young whale named ÔDesire', in Monaco on July 20, 2007. Their intention is to hospitalise the animal on a floating stretcher which was launched two days ago in the port of Fontvieille. This stretcher and a team of technicians have been placed at the whale's disposal by the Conseil GŽnŽral of the Alpes-Maritimes. Vets are trying to bring the whale back to health by providing it with food and water, and specialists are constantly monitoring its progress. The situation remains precarious, but everyone is hoping the little whale will be back on the mend soon.

they are very beautiful images, thank you, MyAdia, unfortunately I fear extremely that the exit of this baby is fatal, they waste too time to speak to the journalists instead of acting!!! apparamment the man with lost his animal instinct at the point to be unable to save a baby whale

I am in anger, disgusted, when I see these photos I cry the distress of the animal so much of it hurts me...

A not so flattering piece about Albert in the Sunday Times: Monaco in a mood over absent Albert - Times Online
It's basically a rewrite of the Nouvel Observateur piece, but hopefully this will reach more people.

In télégramme too
Le Télégramme - Commentaires - La Lettre de Roxane. A chacun ses « affaires »

Worse, than it!!!! The telegram wrote an article: " the prince takes regularly the powder of escampette because he misses farm on his rock. "

I would like to see more real political activity and bilateral trade agreements especially with ecological issues with Asia. Monaco barely seems to have a relationship with that entire part of the world? And what about Canada?

Welcome! Great post! I would like to read more about his job activities because right now I just get the impression he's nothing more than a good will ambassador. I agree with you it would be good to see these things and read about them.

Different rooms of the same house ...

If Prince Albert's views on global issues would have him look at all places as different rooms within the same house, he would lean towards inviting, perhaps as happened with his mother, people in from the countries which possess great intellectual, environmental, cultural, economic and spiritual wealth into Monaco by default of sharing some of the same goals with them.

In Asia, where Monaco has only an interest in the Philippines simply through AMADE and hardly any other avenue, they might consider that Asians tend to re-use and re-cycle in a most natural way and have done so for centuries. Their environmental partnering might help heal the world faster?

Canada has one of the largest English-French speaking populations, same red and white national colours!, and a similar sypathetic heart to restore the Earth and heal the wounded economies for the poor. They also tend towards GREENer existence and not depleting natural resources despite being in bilateral agreements with the United States.

He needs to concentrate on expanding foreign policy in order to increase the natural cash flow to Monaco and invite pools of visitors and money who have otherwise not made a natural course of spending their time, money or interests in Monaco! Canadians, Thais, Indians, Burmese, Colombians, etc ...

Perhaps he should consider marrying a first generation Canadian who comes from a country he would like to develop bilateral trade agreements with? (Something like his father did, pulling in wealthy Americans and Europeans with Grace's background!) Chances are she would be well-educated and speak some French!?

Rosalee )

You make excellent points! I would like to see his press team working hard at getting his message out on all this as opposed to the photo op at galas.

The man is damned if he does, damned if he don't.:ermm: If he concentrates on foreign policy, he'll be away from home even more and he's already being criticized for being away so often.

In theory you could look at this past year as Albert introducing himself to foreign Gov. but from here on in his ambassadors should be the ones traveling and communicating. there must be an someone in a similar position to that of Secretary of State who does most of the traveling. Albert really should be making very few trips this year and let his ambassadors do it. He only needs to go when treaties are being signed. He also needs to cut down on the number of Galas/ sports charities/ etc, outside of Monaco- he does way too many of them. Could he start to let some of the trio do a few? Anyway I would expect to see him home more this year or he may find someone else in his seat supposedly just keeping it warm. JMO

I wrote this earlier when the site was having problems, so I copied & saved it & am reposting it now. But I just noticed I had missed reading a few posts & have just read Albert's Message. I'm not sure if I would have wrote anything different. I didn't realize he was getting that much criticism or to what extent the internal problems (although Cote hinted), that he would respond so strongly. Seems like he is having to deal with much the same as his father did, in his first few years. I think they would put any new guy to the test & see, If? Where? How hard? Albert can be pushed & see where they might have some leverage, if any? I think they will find he will be his father's son in many ways and much sooner than his father earned that reputation. I have posted before that I think the first few years of any government is always shaky and this is when the problems are discovered, the kinks worked out, and you need to clean house. I think Albert kept some of his father's guys, he needed for continuity for awhile & some he thought who could make the transition & be loyal to him after working for his father. He's just finding out who will work out & who wont. I don't think this is unusual? He has a pretty unique situation as well. I liked his message, but I would be able to take him more serious, if he could drop his preference for bimbo's image, for a preference for women with some substance & depth. He can't show up on the world stage with someone like Charlene. It's time to grow up & put his play things away.

Hi Hibou,

That has always been my feeling. I have not had a problem with Albert traveling for this reason, I do think he is doing exactly this, and is probably making headway in a lot of ways we do not hear about, and that will probably benefit him and Monaco in the future. Although, I think I might have to disagree that he is able to send someone else for a few different reasons, one, he is new on the stage and is introducing himself, Another reason being, considering Monaco's size and importance in how it rates in the world, he cannot afford to send a lackey (especially being new). That would not sit well with more powerful governments - We all know how that game works. He has shown that he is this smart (IMO) and I think he would like to expand Monaco's image globally & give it a more serious platform or role in the world. (JMO?)

I do believe you are right. I also think he has not completely made the shift in that he is now the ruling Monarch - He is trying to manage his new position as well as continuing to play the part of the "goodwill ambassador" (as someone suggested), which was required of him when his father was still alive, and I guess he will still have to manage this to some extent??

His father was right in trying to teach Albert about not attending everything. His attendance is nothing special or honored, if he makes himself too available. I think too, he is perhaps attending too many galas & less important engagements. Women understand this concept just from dating, we know we have to make ourselves scarce & unavailable, and to become someone that is thought to be a little bit special (unlike any woman Albert's ever experienced):). I think when he shows up at an event with Charlene, it gives the appearance that the event is purely social, and less important. Charlene does not understand the concept above, or she would not want to over saturate the market with herself, which they both have already done with her? Whatever their plans?

I don't blame Albert for feeling claustrophobic at times in Monaco. It's a small place, he's lived there most of his life & he is very public, hence the reason why I don't understand why he doesn't have a desire to keep his private life private? Relationships or otherwise? It seems it is more a PR problem that he hasn't learned to balance. He should take private holidays, but I don't see a reason to announce them. They did announce he would be in the Maldives with friends & family for his birthday? You have to know that would only invite the press after Charlene being flaunted on the cover of Paris-Match? Now they are announcing his Midwest vacation? Why? At least, take the word vacation out of it & say he will be visiting the Midwest, if they must say anything at all?

When he is in Monaco working and doing good things for Monaco and it's people, that is when his PR team should be busy? Instead he is making great efforts in drawing attention to his private life. Charlene's appearance at everything & everyday, makes it look like his life is one big party, while he's in Monaco anyway -- his job appears to take on a purely social aspect. Because Charlene is not really in the political position to be Albert's constant companion, as she seems to be, it discounts everything he attends with her? I felt the timesonline.Uk article was a little harsh in regard to his traveling outside Monaco so much and I'm sure he feels he can't win either way. But since he is new at his job, he should try to at least give the impression that he takes it seriously, which I'm sure he does. I think they need some new PR people, or Albert needs to stop ignoring them, if that indeed is the problem. I hope we continue to see him working, and functioning w/o the distraction of his currant escort, at least for a few things. I actually enjoy seeing and reading about what Albert can! and plans to do for Monaco, when there seems to be the right focus. I know this is Monaco's social season but Albert's image is lacking balance. (IMO)

I also think all the talk about him having a private plane, his traveling, or talk about the Grand Prix (which is Monaco history), not being green, is nonsense! He is a ruling Monarch -- Is he really suppose to show up on a bike? Should he empty out the ports & dump or thin everybody out of Monaco? I think he is trying to do what he can do? Monaco is not an easy place to make green. I think this is a sincere issue for him & he is trying to do something on a larger level. I hate when everyone makes it an all or nothing issue? Hey! It's not that easy being green:D

Sorry, I really didn't mean to write a book, feel free to scan (or not).

I think we are in agreement here but I should clarify that what I meant was after he has made his formal introductions as he did this year he should step back abit and let his ambassadors do their job. He can then come in when needed to at weight to what ever agreement they are trying for. So we really are on the same page. Great post!

Oh! I understand. Yes, I agree he can relax a bit going forward and focus on other things. Politically, I hope everything falls into place for him. Not that he isn't going to have to work for it.:)

The mag also has an interview with Licia Balzan, the blonde lady pictured by Albert's side. She's the honorary consul of the Pricipality of Monaco, and is married to Mario Polegato, the inventor of the "GEOX" shoes.

She said that Albert is their customer, along with the other members of the Grimaldi family. He wears size 43, as well as Ernt of Hanover. Caroline wears sizes 39 instead. I can't recall if she ever mentioned what size Stéphanie wears... According to her, Charlene must wear size 41...

She also recalled of one dinner, where she was seated next to Prince Albert. They were served a dish of ravioli, the lady refused to eat. When Albert had finished to eat his portion, he ate up the lady's too.

ETA: there's a link for Prince Albert paying a short visit to the Naples' Donna Regina museum on the 23rd of July:
