This would be a good place, IMO, to post the Countess of Wessex's tiara. UGGGGH.

As for the flower basket brooch--really? I love this piece! It's gorgeous, large, substantial, and really attractive. I think that this might be considered to be a piece "not liked by some" but I don't think it merits a position in the worst royal jewels thread alongside say, the poppies, or that horrible scarab necklace of Princess Lillian's (I shudder just typing that out)!

Since we're stuck on the poppies as being hideous, I thought I'd just go ahead and throw Queen Sonja's modern gold tiara with (GASP) matching pieces as being second in our Worst Royal Jewels unofficial contest. I really hate them.

I never really and trulyappreciated the amethyst tiara until Princess Martha Louise wore it to the Swedish wedding--it took dark hair to really make it pop--but pop it did and it really is a lovely piece! http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zM0rB7Fia5...tha+louise.JPG
However, that Wonder Woman-esque modern looking tiara with interchangeable red and green stones with that horrid choker is, well, I just don't even have words--all I will say is that it certainly belongs in this thread!

I'll admit that I'm not much of a jewelry person. I like pearls and simple jewelry. NOt much into flashy jewelry or jewelry which is over the top. I do remember Sarah's ring. Unusual ring which most people wouldn't forget when they saw it.

What was unusual about Sarah's ring? It was just a simple ruby surrounded by diamonds. The worst engagement ring recently was Princess Marie's of Denmark...horrible.

Queen Sonja´s modern tiara ( Queen Sonja Jewellery ) reminds of another tiara worn by Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotta, queen of Sweden and Norway until 1818 Fil:CharlotteSwedenNorwayR.jpg - Wikipedia
but I find the elderly tiara more attractive

I don't think that it was ML's dark hair that set off the amethyst tiara. Imo it was the perfect hairstyle and placing the tiara upright, that the tiara was shown off against the backdrop of the piled up hair. In contrast MM usually wears tiaras at an angle, is if they were hair bands (she did it again with the pearl tiara at the Swedish wedding). But If she would copy the Märtha-Louise's hairstyle, the dark amethyst would look stunning against her fair hair.

Who knows, maybe it was Sonja who chose the modern tiara herself? At least it would explain why she continues to wear it.

^^^ It wouldn't of surprised me if she did pick it, comparing it to some of her fashion choices it sure is her style.

And maybe King Harald is like so many other husbands who feel unsure when it comes to picking presents for their wives, and ask her to choose herself.

You have made an excellent point about the hairstyle--and MM really does tend to do a "headband" type of thing with tiaras. I thought, as much as like Queen Maude's tiara, that it just looked weird on MM. It's the angle. You're so right!

I must agree. The entire suite is really quite unnatractive I think. But I'm not found of turqoise anyway so...

Has Queen Elizabeth ever wore this stuff? OMG, this must be very heavy for a neck to handle.

My goodness that's a big lump of opal, isn't it! I can't say I've ever seen it on HM.

Her Majesty has only worn it once. It was on her tour of Austalia in 1954 and she was presented with the necklace and earrings and wore the set to an evening engagement. It has never been seen since that appearance.

It was a gift from the South Australian Government.
As has been stated, it hasn't been seen in public since and I can't balme her really. It's not particularly attractive, however expensive it is (and it would be a very very expensive suite indeed).
For all we know it may have been taken apart and the diamonds used for some other piece of jewellery.

I came across pictures of this tiara a couple of days ago. I find it quite odd looking. Looks like it's made of solid gold; and what exactly are the white stones? Pearls? Looks like something that belongs in the Middle Ages.
I think Princess Astrid wore a matching bracelet with it as well. The brooch isn't much to look at either.
