I think jewels are beautiful no matter what but there are times when they are put in a weird setting or paired with other not so good looking jewels, then the pieces, for example: tiara, necklace, brooch etc. look ugly. I was wondering if you have a piece that just was not esthetically pleasing to your eye in one way or another.

I'll go first, for some reason I didn't like Sophie Countess of Wessex's wedding pearl necklace that Edward designed for her. To me it looked tacky, just the way the pearls came down into a cross and then to make it worse Edward threw in those big black pearls. I'm all for pearls, I think they're very beautiful but this necklace struck me as weird looking. It would have been better if Edward maybe put the pearls on a gold pendant cross with a plain gold chain or used the pearl necklace but put a big pearl in the center. To me this one just didn't hit the mark. Here's a pic:

The swedish 'jeep-tiara's', the ones with the diamond buttons, especially the one with 4 buttons is not very succesfull.

Also this was a disaster with the dress as it didn't co-ordinate with anything. Her nose looks really obvious in this photo too - you can really see where it has been done.

I don't like the Swedish tiara either although I prefer Rania's out of the two - just not on Rania

I agree Magnik, Victoria's first tiara is horrible, there's nothing to it. Are there even any jewels on it? If there is I can't tell, it's too small. They should have started her off with something better and bigger!:)

I think those two are reserved only for Queen Silvia.

I think the diamond fringe tiara would have been great for a starter, it seems just the right size for Victoria.

Who knows, but Queen lends her tiara (gift from Carl Gustaf) to Madeleine.
Btw. I'm not soure if I good remember but doesn't Silvia lend her tiaras to her sisters-in-law?

Here are a few more that I just don't like.

1.Princess Maxima tiara, it looks fake to me and it reminds me of spears. I hope she doesn't poke an eye out with that thing.

2. Princess Martha Louise, yet another small, small tiara. I can hardly see this one either. Is this tiara made out of just pearls and silver or are there diamonds on the base? Note to royals: bigger is better, or et least big enough so we can see it.;) http://www.theroyalforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2956&d=1046186880

3. Princess Sarah, to me this one looks fake too. I admitt is a pretty design but it looks like something you could buy out of a bridal store. The color of the diamonds are also questionable, are they yellow, white or just dirty? When diamonds do not have very good clarity they look dirty.

4. Princess Mabel, don't like this one either. It looks alright from the top but theres nothing to it on the bottom. And I know it was off the sapphire tiara of Queen Beatrix's tiara but it seems they could have done something to it to make it look better. It's just another one that looks weird to me.

Maby Princess Sarah's tiara would looks better on hair than on this scarf?

The worst is Queen Rania's. Was it a tiara anyway? Doesn't resemble anything close to it. And the dress is a total disaster.
I don't think the 6 or 4 button Swedish tiara's are that bad. At least better then Rania's green stuff.

I agree about the pointy tiara Maxima is wearing. The frame is not very nice (the stones themselves are very beautiful IMO) and I prefer it in one of the other frames Queen Wilhelmina put it, or as a necklace. I do not like some other tiara's she wore that much either, the star-tiara is much nicer with the original pearl buttons, and the tiara with the upright pearls, also worn by Laurentien in Copenhagen is much better with the original emeralds.

Oh my gosh! I HATE Princess Madeline's (sp?) aqua marine tiara!!!!!
It makes her look like a cyclops!!! It is the ugliest thing and poor excuse of a tiara that I've ever seen. Even being as pretty as she is does nothing to make this "thing" look good! I wish I had a pic of it to post, but it's so ugly that I refuse to save any picture with it!

i think it might be the closeup thats the problem.
I some other pictures the diamonds look bright and sparkling. With the Bruneian royals one also has to keep in mind that all the colours of the bright outfits are also reflected in the jewellery.
I actually think its a light and pretty tiara for a young woman of 17.
Some of the heavier tiaras of the other Bruneian royal ladies would look so out of place on Sarah.

I'll make the sacrifice :D .
I object to this being called a 'tiara'. Madeleine should have refused to wear it and demanded something better. It's not as if they don't have enough to go round. :)

These tiara's belong to Queen Sonja of Norway.

1. All I have three words for this tiara and necklace Yuck Yuck Yuck. Were not Xena warrior princess!

2. Why Sonja, why.:( I love this tiara's base but not the crosses (I think that's what they are correct me if I'm wrong) on the top. Maybe if she spread those around the base so they go all the way around instead of hording all three of them at the top it would be okay.

SOME necklaces are fabulous as tiaras (and vise-versa) but what is princess madeline wearing?? so awful. she's very pretty but she should know better and choose the right pieces for her.

Warren - Loved your comment and the photo! It is rather a pathetic excuse for a tiara isn't it?

i actually like Princess Madeline's aqua marine 'tiara'. like the simple design.
hate Rania's boucheron emerald tiara....worst i've ever seen. i don't think it will look good on anyone

I have seen a closeup of this tiara and there are actually tiny diamonds and sapphires at the ends of the "spikes". You wonder why they even bothered putting them there since they are hardly visible to the naked eye. I would have had a hard time hiding my disappointment if I had been given this as a birthday present.

I think we are going to be alone here on that one. I like it too (the diamond version, not the gold one). But then, I liked Mabel's wedding dress, so my taste is very much questionable...:D

I am sorry to say, but Rania's tiaras scream 'Nouveau Riche' very badly. Just plain ugly and show off-y

Something like this?

i also agree with margrethe's poppy "thing". it's definetely a really awful jewel. the same for the tiara victoria of sweden normally uses with the buttons. it is so big and not delicate.
i must say i kind of like madeleine's tiara. it's simple and the colour of the jewel itself makes a nice match with her eyes. the same for sonja's tiara. although it's not my favourite i see nothing wrong with it. personally i think gold tiaras don't look as good as silver ones. is it topaces sonja's has?

i think all jewels look good as long as they are not too flashy or not delicate. a little sparkling jewel looks a lot better than big thick gold ones normally. as we always say, elegant women need to have the words simple and delicate in mind all the time, and the same applies to jewels.

I think that these silver vintage/heritage Georg Jensen jewellery are to die for:) - and I'm glad that Mary wore them at an official visit. IMO they were just perfect with that black dress.

I agree on QMII's poppy jewellery - just too 'golden' and too much, especially together with the earrings. She may think so too now; can't remember seing the queen wearing them for years.

Another tiara which I find unattractive is a ruby tiara owned by queen Elizabeth - I think it is called the Burmese tiara.
