British Jewels: Suggested Changes

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Britain has gone through a time of deep recession, and so I think that Catherine is doing a wise thing in not wearing a lot of jewelry. Besides, we really don't know how much of that jewelry she actually has access to. Does Her Majesty give free access to the jewel vaults, or does each piece need to be asked for and returned immediately after use? I don't expect to see Catherine in a tiara unless it's for a high state occasion such as the Opening of Parliament, a State Banquet, or the Diplomatic Reception. When Prince Charles becomes King, the jewelry that she can wear will be upgraded. Royal jewelry is always an indicator of rank within the family and is worn to show royal status. For Kate to wear as much jewelry as Camilla or the Queen just isn't on.:flowers:

No one is saying for her to go about dripping in diamonds like Queen Mary did back in the old days. Those days are long gone.

Catherine is a senior royal next to The Queen and Duchess of Cornwall, it's her place to wear the family heirlooms when the time calls for it.

Yes, Catherine can borrow jewels from The Queen, if she ask. She's already done this.

I don't think they usually ask for the jewels. I think they are suggested to wear them. And QEII seems to be very sparse with what she loans out.

Yes, "when the time calls for it." Not many of those times have happened yet, just her wedding and the Diplomatic Reception. She hasn't attended a State Banquet or the State Opening of Parliament.

I think they have to ask to borrow some jewels; the Queen most likely won't suggest they wear them. I think the royal ladies choose what interests them. Diana, Anne, Sophie, Camilla and now Catherine have done this.

But she could sometimes use some smaller Jewels for her day engagements. Like a broosh or a pearl necklace or a small pearl choker. And for the evening galas or Premieres she attends she could also wear necklaces.

I agree. She could wear some brooches for her official engagements and wear necklaces for her evening engagements. She also can play around with the jewels to make them look a little less overwhelming. She could wear The Queen Mother's Diamond and Sapphire brooch, her polar bear brooch she received in Canada.

There is at least one separate thread on what jewelry Kate will wear?

This thread is about suggested changes to the jewels.

But that is some really out of date jewels.... Kate is a modern, minimalistic woman. I don't know any of those who would put a pearl choker on.

True, so to spin of off this. I would want some new jewels be done with all the queens brooches (late ofc, she's still using them). A brooch can be pretty, but it can look really old. I would love for some to be made/make a double use for them to be easily put in hair. Alot (like the wheat brooches from Queen Victoria) would look great in an updo or half updo.

Some of the brooches in the royal collection could make wonderful pendants with collet necklaces.

Absolutely, sounds beautiful!

I took a look at the wonderful Queens Jewels blog. Here are my contenders of brooches.

These would look lovely in hair (Especially Catherines dark hair!):
http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.com/2012/05/the-diamond-and-gold-rose-brooch.html
http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.se/2013/10/queen-victorias-wheat-ear-brooches.html

And these would be my top picks for pendants:
http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.se/2013/02/the-nizam-of-hyderabad-rose-brooches.html (actually, this one has 2 small and one big. I wonder if it would look good as earrings and necklace?)
http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.se/2012/06/kent-amethyst-demi-parure.html
http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.se/2013/01/the-delhi-carved-emerald-brooch.html
http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.se/2013/02/the-delhi-durbar-stomacher-and-scroll.html
http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.se/2013/03/empress-marie-feodorovnas-sapphire.html
Something like this http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.se/2012/05/the-george-vi-festoon-necklace.html could be worn like CP Victoria does here: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AG8Ovi_6U.../CrownPrincessVictoriaDiamondBandeauTiara.jpg

There is so many changes that can be done without destroying the integrity of the piece :)

Quite right.

Camilla has twice worn a "minor collet" with a serious sapphire and diamond pendant. That is very much the model I had in mind.

I made a "new" tiara from a necklace, a thing I've seen suggested around the internet :p My suggestion is that they would make it a flexible base so it can change back to a necklace.

It's this necklace I've used: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/7b/fb/47/7bfb4704a9e94676db8d5f6ce464275d.jpg

And this is my result: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/0e/8f/49/0e8f49ed33b90f90c5090d01b01014f9.jpg

I placed it on Catherines head since I needed a head to put it on and it matches her ring :) What do you guys think? I think it could look good. Maybe add a diamond base to it...

Yes.. this works well, although a diamond base [like that on the GBBI] would 'elevate it'.

Very nice works as a tiara. He reminds me a little the Connaught tiara. Well done wonderful your inspiration

I must that would make a very good tiara design and would suit Catherine really well. It reminds me also of another Swedish sapphire tiara too.

I agree that it would look so good on Catherine!! I hope someone in the circles get this same idea :p Would be a great way to get a "new" tiara without buying new tiaras!

I've often wondered how flexible this necklace is. Queen Alexandra's amethyst necklace/tiara looked quite different in its different incarnations. Jewels of Queen Alexandra | Amethysts Necklace Tiara | Princess Maud Countess of Southesk so if this sapphire necklace is flexible I would think that in a tiara configuration the elements would be compressed together more i.e. the diamond loops and spacers nearly touching so that it would look closer to the Vladimir but with the sapphires being fixed rather than dangling. Just my guess.

Yeah, I know. It was hard to get them further together :p But that's my guess as well.. BUt might be that it's not as flexible since (as far as we know) it's not made for being convertable into a tiara :)

Well done you! I have long wanted to see something similar done. I think Catherine will be the one with the opportunity to do something like this.

That photoshop is great, the 'tiara' looks quite lovely on Kate. I agree that a convertible necklace-tiara usually has the elements closer together in it's tiara form. But to achieve this in photoshop must be incredibly difficult, so we'll have to use our imagination. Imo the tiara would look even better with lesser space between the elements.

PS. Good that you labelled the pic as photoshopped! That will prevent confusion. :flowers:

exactly!! :)

Yeah, I've gotten a rutine of labelling those kinds of pictures since some people don't realize they're photoshopped (like the Camilla in Lovers Knot pictures). Better safe than sorry :p

Yes, Camilla and the lover's knot tiara might haunt us forewer. Or that old b/w montage of Diana with the greek key Spencer tiara.
