Well, I didn't read the interviw itself, but I did read (don't ask me where...) that the baby's name was Odysseus.

The king of Ithaca

Odysseus (called Ulysses in Latin) was the son of Laertes and was the ruler of the island kingdom of Ithaca. He was one of the most prominent Greek leaders in the Trojan War, and was the hero of Homer's Odyssey. He was known for his cleverness and cunning, and for his eloquence as a speaker.

Odysseus was one of the original suitors of Helen of Troy. When Menelaus succeeded in winning Helen's hand in marriage, it was Odysseus who advised him to get the other suitors to swear to defend his marriage rights. However, when Menelaus called on the suitors to help him bring Helen back from Troy, Odysseus was reluctant to make good on his oath. He pretended to have gone mad, plowing his fields and sowing salt instead of grain. Palamedes placed Odysseus' infant son in front of the plow, and Odysseus revealed his sanity when he turned aside to avoid injuring the child.

However reluctant he may have been to join the expedition, Odysseus fought heroically in the Trojan War, refusing to leave the field when the Greek troops were being routed by the Trojans, and leading a daring nocturnal raid in company with Diomedes. He was also the originator of the Trojan horse, the strategem by which the Greeks were finally able to take the city of Troy itself. After the death of Achilles, he and Ajax competed for Achilles' magnificent armor; when Odysseus' eloquence caused the Greeks to award the prize to him, Ajax went mad and killed himself.

Odysseus' return from Troy, chronicled in the Odyssey, took ten years and was beset by perils and misfortune. He freed his men from the pleasure-giving drugs of the Lotus-Eaters, rescued them from the cannibalism of the Cyclopes and the enchantments of Circe. He braved the terrors of the underworld with them, and while in the land of the dead Hades allowed Thiresias, Odysseus' mother, Ajax and others to give him adivice on his next journey. They gave him important advice about the cattle of the sun (which Apollo herds), Scylla and Charybdis and the Sirens. From there on the travels were harder for Odysseus, but they would have been much worse of it wasn't for the help of the dead.
With this newly acquired knowledge, he steered them past the perils of the Sirens and of Scylla and Charybdis. He could not save them from their final folly, however, when they violated divine commandments by slaughtering and eating the cattle of the sun-god. As a result of this rash act, Odysseus' ship was destroyed by a thunderbolt, and only Odysseus himself survived. He came ashore on the island of the nymph Calypso, who made him her lover and refused to let him leave for seven years. When Zeus finally intervened, Odysseus sailed away on a small boat, only to be shipwrecked by another storm. He swam ashore on the island of the Phaeacians, where he was magnificently entertained and then, at long last, escorted home to Ithaca. There were problems in Ithaca as well, however. During Odysseus' twenty-year absence, his wife, Penelope, had remained faithful to him, but she was under enormous pressure to remarry. A whole host of suitors were occupying her palace, drinking and eating and behaving insolently to Penelope and her son, Telemachus. Odysseus arrived at the palace, disguised as a ragged beggar, and observed their behavior and his wife's fidelity. With the help of Telemachus and Laertes, he slaughtered the suitors and cleansed the palace. He then had to fight one final battle, against the outraged relatives of the men he had slain; Athena intervened to settle this battle, however, and peace was restored. The adventures of Odysseus and his return, as told by Thomas Bulfinch.

Hello article on the newborn

NEW BABY BOY FOR CROWN PRINCE PAVLOS AND MARIE-CHANTAL

21 SEPTEMBER 2004

Prince Pavlos of Greece and his wife Marie-Chantal have become parents for the fourth time. The couple welcomed a little boy at London's Portland Hospital on Friday afternoon.
"Crown Prince and Princess Pavlos of Greece are delighted to announce the birth of their fourth child, as yet unnamed, at 1.15pm on Friday," said a statement from the couple. "Mother and child are both doing fine."
The bundle of joy, who weighed in at a healthy 7lb 8oz, is a new brother for Maria-Olympia, aged eight, Constantine Alexios, five, and four-year-old Achileas Andreas.
The proud parents have always been open about their desire to have lots of children. "My wife and I think our role as parents is so important," the prince once said. "We have always dreamt of having a big family."
Crown Prince Pavlos is the eldest son of King Constantine of Greece. He met Marie-Chantal at a wedding in New Orleans in 1992 and the pair got engaged two years later. They were married in London, where they still live, in 1995.

Smile Could be worse...

ODYSSEUS ! Never thought of that name! But if the parents like the name, then it shall be Odysseus!:o
Need a little time to get used to it. Never before heard of a royal of that name.

Could be much worse, think about of ..., but better not to name any, in case it would hurt somebody.

Is Odysseus a common name in Greece nowadays?

This baby was born in Lodon? What happened to Marie Chantal still being in Greece from during the Olympics and Constantine wanting at least one of his grand children to be born in Greece?

Yes, the baby was born in London, where Pavlos and MC live. The whole Greek royal family was in Athens for the Olympics.

I just read somewhere (maybe here?) that the King really wanted at least one of his grandchildren to be born in Greece. I didn't really think it would happen -- the grandchild of an exhiled King being born in the country he was forced to flee from -- seemed like it had some major political ramifications. But some people were very adamant that Marie Chantal was still in Greece and as she was so close to her delivery date it seemed possible that that might happen timing wise. But thanks for clearing up the London birth thing.

Odysseus is a big name to live up to. Couldn't they have chosen a less..."special" name for their son? Their other kids have very nice names that work well with eachother. But Odysseus...they might as well have named him Poseidon or Juno. They live in London. I'd imagine it'd be hard to live with a name like Odysseus...

Well, it sure shocked me, G! I knew she'd been in Greece for the entire Olympics, so it seemed a natural assumption that she was still there.

Maybe they just decided they *had* to be in London and it wasn't about gov't disapproval at all? I hope that when Nikolaos and his younger brother and sister marry, that they have their children born in Greece if they so desire. :p

Unhappy

I thought that they stayed as long as possible in Greece knowing it was so close to her due date was deliberate- they could have had her labor induced early just for the chance to give birth on greek soil think of the greek drama and the press coverage !. I won't be suprised if they did induce her so that it's a second choice and not a "happy coincidence" the baby came on her birthday and grandparents wedding anniversary I heard alot of couples schedule their c-sections or induce for meaningful dates .

Why didn't Pavlos or Marie-Chantal carried the baby out of the hospital?

Is it a VOGUE that Pavlos is carrying???

23 SEPTEMBER 2004 - http://www.hellomagazine.com

Proud parents Prince Pavlos and Marie-Chantal of Greece began a new life with their bouncing baby boy on Wednesday, leaving the London hospital where the princess has remained since giving birth last Friday.

The couple's new arrival had a discreet introduction to the world, carried in a nurse's arms as a weary but content Marie-Chantal, her hair pulled simply back, took her place in the back of an awaiting car. Meanwhile, a smiling Pavlos got in the passenger seat, ready to take his new son to the family home in the capital city.

Pavlos, the eldest son of ex-King Constantine of Greece and Queen Anne-Marie, and his wife have three other children: Maria-Olympia, aged eight, and as well as five-year-old Constantine Alexios and four-year-old Achileas Andreas. Their latest addition, who weighed in at 7lb 8oz, was born on September 17 at London's Portland Hospital.
