Family Christmas Card 1970 when Grace was 41. Saddest quote I ever read in book on Grace by James Spada was "for a woman, 40 is a disaster; the end." I think she'd never looked better!

Things I've Learned About Grace

I remember the shock I felt learning she had died so young and have read many, many books about her. From them, I've gleaned the following, which may be of interest:

- She was terrified of flying and predicted she would die in a car or plane crash in her 20's
- Her favourite meal was a good, old fashioned American hamburger; Ranier became quite proficient at grilling them
- There have been rumors of her drinking getting out of hand as she grew older but the reality is she was "puffy" in the face at times simply due to change of life and hormonal imbalances. She enjoyed a beer or glass of champagne at most.
- Her kitchen in Roc Agel was turquoise..wish I still had the photo of Caroline, Stefano and their family in it!
- Her dear friends said she had the most amazing way of getting up looking quite normal, then slowly throughout the day, adding more makeup or hairpieces till by the end of the day she was movie star stunning.
- She had terrible nearsightedness and had no luck with contact lens so often tried to get by w/o glasses and endured terrible headaches as a result.
- She loved french provincial furniture and shipped over many of her fine pieces after she married to add to the palace to make it more homey. One "love seat" in particular made Ranier laugh as it was quite odd in size and shape. He said "only the French would build a loveseat made for three!"
- She loved Christmas and would prepare for months, wrapping most gifts herself.
- She said she there was no such thing as a fairytale but "one could be fine if one was content--non-stop bliss and happiness is a myth."
- She went through a period of depression after her marriage and would go to bed in the middle of the day, giving orders not to be disturbed; no matter what. Later, she "accepted" her role and fact she would no longer make movies and adhered to a rigorous schedule as a true working princess--rising at 7 and working till late at night.
- She had a very close tight-knit group of friends and maintained contact with them, even when trans-atlantic calls were quite costly, through regular calls and letters.
- She had a complex relationship with her father who adored his eldest daughter, Peggy, and didn't think much--at least outwardly--of anything Grace did. Even after winning the Oscar, he said something to the effect "geez, I always thought Peggy would be the 'star' in this family" and after Caroline's birth, he said to the press "aw shucks, a girl!" She was still seeking his approval till his death. Peggy lived a much more complicated life--marrying and divorcing several times and becoming an alcoholic. She WAS very beautiful and did nothing wrong in her father's eyes.....she, too, died way too young.
- Grace never thought she was beautiful nor a great actress; she felt she did her best work as a princess 'tho she would've preferred to be a great mom but her children often made her feel inadequate in that regard. She did admit she was very strict with Caroline and terribly permissive with Stephanie and that Albert was just a doll; so easy to raise.
- She smoked occasionally but only when under great stress.
- She was 5'7", 115 pounds when a movie star. Lost about 20 pound before wedding due to stress. Later, got upset as she gained weight during a horrendous change of life but finally became resolved to the weight gain, trying to rein herself in a bit for appearances with something resembling a corset. She and a friend, Fleur Cowles, went to weight loss spas a few times but she finally said "oh, Fleur, what's the point?"
- She loathed the dress she wore the first day she met Ranier but the power went out and it was the only dress which wasn't crumpled......it was black with huge cabbage roses and she couldn't even dry her hair so pulled it back and someone created a ring of dried flowers to wear as a headpiece. He was late for the meeting which annoyed her--as she had rushed and felt not at her best.....but he won her over with his apologies. She left the Palace saying he was "so charming."
- Her wedding dress and trousseau were contributed by MGM and contained all the clothes she wore from "High Society." Later, she combined American and French designers in her wardrobe. Hermes made a purse for her--still called the "Kelly" bag, in her honor. Now there are many versions made by many designers.
- She loved family holidays in Jamaica. The family went there to recuperate shortly after Stefano's death.
- She was not a vain woman--by all accounts. She, in fact, was, at the time, sometimes critcized for being frumpy or wearing her glasses in public. One tabloid likened her to be more of a "schoolmarm than a Princess." But criticism of her appearance didn't bother her and, when she needed to be, she was every inch the glamorous Princess of Monaco.

I don't know why Princess Grace would give up her glittering acting career to become a princess. There is nothing wrong with princesses, i think they do a wonderful job and i have the utmost respect for royalty, its justthat, IMO i think being a movie star is way better and more exciting than being a princess. Its just my opinion thats all. What do you all think?

Once Princess Grace became royalty, how did she make it on the news and media? I know that she always appeared on the news and such as Princess Grace but what for? Did the news used to cover her travels?

Hey everyone,
I have to do a presentation about Princess Grace. We are watching High Noon at school, so I have to do it mostly on the actress Grace Kelly, not the Princess. I know quite a lot about her as a princess but not much about Grace Kelly´s movies and her time as an actress.
Are there any websites you can recommend?
I would be thankful for any help!
Helen

Just want 2say what an excellent post this is. Of all the old movie stars Grace Kelly is one of my favourites. Both she & Audrey Hepburn were revolutionary at the time in bucking the trend for very curvey actresses. Grace had class, she didn't show of her body like many of the other actresses at of the time!!

The photo's are scans taken from the Sunday Times 2nd Oct 92. They're from a book on Grace by Howell Conant who took many photo's of PG & her family over the years.

I've read/flipped through it too. It's NOT a detailed biography with new revelations or anything, but a really nice pictorial tirbute by a wonderful photographer. He includes several of the official family portraits that the princely family would use on their Xmas cards. From those you can see that Grace kept her beauty well into middle age.

Hello everyone!

I've been quietly reading all of your wonderful posts and now am posting here for the first time. What a great site this is! I've always loved Grace and thought her story to be facinating.

Here is a good website for Grace Kelly the actress:

I'd also like to add that it has some pics of Grace during her Hollywood years, some "official" and others candid. And besides the official family pictures it has some candid pics of them too. It's a great book and a must have for any fan.

Just thought i'd post some facts!!!

*In the late 40's Grace worked as a model.
*Won an Oscar in 1954 for The Country Girl. Beating Judy Garland and Audrey Hepurn.
*Her career lasted from 1950-56. She made 11 films.

Fourteen Hours '51, High Noon '52, Mogambo '53, Dial M For Murder '54, Green Fire '54, The Country Girl '54, The Bridges at Toko-Ri '54, To Catch A Thief '55, The Swan '56, High Society '56.

*Made films with many famous actors of the day including:

Ava Gardner, Clark Gable, Alex Guiness, James Stewart, Cary Grant, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinartra (yes, i know he's a singer. But he acted alot as well!!)

*To Catch a Thief was filmed in the Riveira, Southern France.
*Made three films with Alfred Hitchcock (Director) including Rear Window.
*Was approaced in the 60's by him to do Marnie, but had2 turn it down as the people of Monaco did not approve!
*Her wedding was filmed by MGM as part of her film contract and the wedding dress was designed by the head of custume's i believe it was Edith Head, tho i'm not sure.
*When Grace met Prince Ranier it was set up by Paris Match to publicise the Cannes film festival which Grace was attending in '55. She almost never turned up. She had no dryer to dry her hair that morning as there was a strike, so could not use an iron to iron her clothes. The only dress she could wear she hated!!! But she went anyway.
*When she made High Society she sang her own songs, including the famous 'True Love' duet with Bing Crosby.

Good books to read on Grace include:

Grace: The Secret Lives of a Princess. James Spada - Dell '88
Grace. Robert Lacey - Pan Macmillan - '94

Also try and get the book, Grace. Howell Conant - Random House '92. He took many pic's of Grace over the years. Starting in 54 or 55.

Princess Grace

Did Princess Grace like being a Princess? Was is what she thought it would be? Or maybe she had mixed feelings about the whole thing. I think that she was very courageous to leave her film career and her homeland to go live in a place that was so different and learning a new language. I know people say that there are perks to being a Princess and I completely agree but there are also drawbacks. What do you all think?

Hi starnightsky!

I have two biographies of Princess Grace - Grace and Once Upon a Time. So my reply will just be based on those books. She had very serious regrets about giving up her movie career and went into depression in the early 60s. At that time, she also suffered two miscarriages after the birth of Prince Albert. It was also said in Once Upon a Time that she had a very hard time adjusting to life in Monaco, because everything was so different and even the palace staff gave her a hard time, not to mention Princess Antoinette and Princess Charlotte.

But in the end, it was said that she was happy and came into terms with the decisions she has made. Her sister Lizanne said so. Her relationship with her family also improved as time went by. It's just so sad that her life ended when it did.

Hope this helps....

Princess Grace was a remarkable woman - she was very beautiful person and I'm also talking about her spirit.

I just saw on the IMDB website about Grace that her movies are/ were banned in Monaco by Price Ranier. Does anyone know if this is true and if so why?

Thanks!

Oh, here's the link in case anyone wants to check it out:

I read about that, too. Apparently, Prince Rainier didn't want to exploit his wife's former occupation. He did permit the screening of some of Grace's films (at the palace screening room), but also chose which to show or not (The Country Girl - okay, but not To Catch A Thief). I also think that at that time he wanted Grace to forget her film career (she was still longing to make movies).

I think that Rainier also did not want the princess of Monaco to be seen in the embraces of other men or lip locking on the big screen. I guess it was frowned upon.
