A Retrospective - The International Monte-Carlo Circus Festival

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Thanks for another great contribution, iloveroyals. I have those
clippings myself and I remember that I've had the impression
that the coverage in that year had been one of the biggest
- not because of the Circus Festival itself but because of the
sensation of Caroline being pregnangt again... :)

Here are some pics of the Circus Festival in 1985:

Thanks for the clippings, iceflower. We're beginning to get quite a nice retrospective !

I agree that 1999 was exceptional in terms of its coverage, because Caroline was pregnant, it was one of the first official outings with her new husband, the children were growing up and were all present. I remember a headline stating "A star is born" in reference to Charlotte's "coming out" at that event. If I may allow myself the pun, it marked the beginning of the media circus around her.

Caroline looks particularly radiant in every circus festival. So does Stephanie of course.

I am not sure about the years of the ones I posted above. One is when she was married to Stefano. One must be the early nineties, (with Andrea) when she has short hair. One if of Princess Stephanie at the age of 20 (so that would be 1985) because it was in a Point de Vue celebrating her twentieth birthday.

Once again a big thanks to you too, iloveroyals :)

I can add two dates to your wonderful pics and clippings.
The third one in your first post on which Caroline hands
out a trophy must be from December 1983, the text
says that she will be great mother and that she had
an engagement ring of Stefano. And the circus festivals
used to took place at the end of each year.
The pic with Andrea is from 1998, the upper one of these
two is from the annual horse event :)

Here are two pics from the Circus Festival in 1990:

Caroline *** Stephanie

Thank you, iceflower, and thank you for the precisions.

I love that picture of Caroline you posted. As I said before, she had a way of getting into the spirit of things by wearing extremely original, colorful, fantasy clothes that give radiance to her face, and later these darker velvet or embroidered coats or dresses that keep the fantasy aspect while lending dignity to the event, to the efforts the artists have gone through. It was a mark of her unfailing taste, always the right clothing for each occasion. With that sense of presence and charisma she adds to the event, it's hard not to want to be there and have fun with them. I also believe she did her best to make her father happy with his initiative: her way of showing her love, of being the "ambassador of charm" as the French say, for anything that carries the prestige of the principality. Of course, Albert and Stephanie played their part too.

I wonder if one of these days, we could reshuffle all the postings so we could do a timeline of the circus and Christmas events so they are in order.

Does anybody know who the boy is who is seated between Andrea and Charlotte in the 1999 festival. At that time they said it was Prince Christian, but he doesn't look like the Christian of today at all.
It was the first time the Hannover-Casiraghi family was together on an official occasion.

Thank you Seb for these screencaps, I love that funny kangaroo ;)

Here are two pics of Rainier, Steph and Stefano at the circus
festival in 1988:

Here's a pic of Princes Caroline attending the festival
in December 1980 and one of Prince Rainier with
Princess Stephanie at a show of the festival in
February 1987:

Princess Caroline is an icon of beauty at the first photo, her face immulates a perfect smile!:)
Thank you very much, Dear Iceflower!:flowers:

From older pictures of the 70's and 80's it seems that the circus festival was held in December. Now and in the 90's it's in January.
Does anyone know when this changed?

You're right cdm. I don't know when this changed but it probably did around 1990 or 1992, considering the Festival was suspended in 1991 because of Steano's death. Am I right?

In 1991 it did not take place because of the assassination danger
during the Gulf War, that was the official explanation. In 1982 the
festival was cancelled because of Grace's fatal accident, so these
were the only years in which the festival did not take place.

I also think that the change from December to January was made
in the years 1989-1992, that needs some extra investigation! :)

Thanks for the information Iceflower, yes I know remember it had to do something with the Gulf War in 1981. Indeed in 1982 they cancelled it as well as National Day because of Grace's death.

A bit out of topic, but I don't remember well, was there a Rose Ball in 1991?

We need to investigate more on this matter :)

The Gulf War took place in 1991 monaco70, and, if i'm not mistaken that was the reason invoqued to the non celebration of the Ball that year. Besides, Stefano had recently passed away, P. Caroline was devastated in her grief, mouning... It was quite a sad moment, to the world and particularly to the Grimaldi family. :verysad:

Lazuli, as it's been a reply to my preceding post, it's
obvious that Monaco70s has only made a slip of the
pen ;)

As to the 1991 rose ball, we've had that discussion
before in the Retrospective thread, in the meantime
I've found a pic of Prince Rainier and Prince Albert
attending the ball without the princesses, so the
media interest had not been that big..

I apologize if i mislead anyone. I believed my informations to be true. Apparently, they're not... mY apologies.:sad::sad:

No need to apologize, everything is fine :flowers: And as you'll
also see in my post above, your information about the reason
for the cancellation is right, I had written that as well in that
post prior to yours.

The last one you've posted is also from 1978, queenofthelight,
we can even see the exact dates of the festival as to the
colourful poster! :)

Here are two pics of the family attending the festival in 1975,
(on two different days of the festival):

You had been right, I understood it a bit later.
By the way, your photos are rare and very domestic!;)
