I don't want to say smoking while pregnant is looked down on here in the states, but I feel that -- well, the feeling isn't positive.

Smoking isn't acceptable anywhere in the US any more...so much so that it became too much trouble to continue my 40+ year smoking habit. I've been quit for 5 years now.
If you smoke, people standing beside you have coughing fits to exhibit their displeasure. You can't smoke in public parks any more.
We Yanks get really upset if we see a smoking and/or alcohol guzzling expectant mother or any kind of mother.
It is a nasty, very unladylike habit.
However, as I have quit (it took me about 40 tries over the past 20 years), I have to say it's the most difficult thing I've ever done. I'm not sure I would tell anyone to quit, knowing how difficult it is.
