Well…Kei and Mako could elope in theory. However respect for family, traditions, and propriety will keep them from doing so. Besides, who would agree to officiate the ceremony? An elopement would be a huge scandal. Anyone involved will be hounded by the press/blamed. I'd imagine Mako's parents and grandparents would be especially hurt and disappointed.


On July 19th, Princess Mako travelled to Londrina and Rolândia in Paraná state. She visited the Cultural and Sports Association of Londrina (Acel), planted a white ipê seedling, unveiled a plaque commemorating her visit, and received a painting by artist Carlos Kubo. She viewed a monument with names of people who contributed to Acel. Then, the princess visited the Japanese Immigration of Parana History Museum in Rolândia.

Brazilian Portuguese is such a nice and soft sounding language as seen/heard in the YouTube clip above ! And the history of the immigrant populations in the late 19th century and early 20th century Brazil (not only the Japanese, but the Italians, Germans, Lebanese, etc.) is so epic. ETA: On July 26th, Princess Mako visited the National Research Institute of the Amazon (INPA). She attended a presentation on INPA and the Museum in the Forest project, fed a manatee, viewed Tanimbuca - a 600 year old tree, and toured the House of Science where she inspected several species of fauna and flora and tried cashew juice. Mako loved the the big leaf Coccoloba plant.

The researchers and trainers said the princess showed interest in everything, was attentive, looking and asking questions.

It's been a while since I've looked into this but I believe, yes, they will. Obviously, Fumihito and Kiko will just be referred to as the Crown Prince and Princess respectively. As for the children they will be given different names for official purposes. For instance, Princess Aiko's official name is Princess Toshi and that's what she is supposed to be referred to in the press and in official engagements and in private she is to be known as Aiko. However, this tradition hasn't really been followed because when Aiko was really young her parents would just refer to her as Aiko in their press conferences and the name just stuck. Because the Japanese people really do love her so her having a name that means "love child" couldn't fit better. So it's unknown just how much these new names will stick.


Full disclaimer, it has been a while since I've looked into this and I couldn't find much when I went to look it up again. But as far as I know, in Japanese these are known as "childhood names" and they are only given to the children of the Emperor and the Crown Prince. These names fall off either when they reach the age of majority (20) or when they get married but I can't remember which. So the Mako and Kako might not get new names. If thats the case, they would just be referred to Princess Mako and Princess Kako without any mention of the Akishino house.

It's been a while since I've looked into this but I believe, yes, they will. Obviously, Fumihito and Kiko will just be referred to as the Crown Prince and Princess respectively.

Will Fumihito really be titled as Crown Prince? Because therotically it could still be possible of Naruhito to father a son. In similiar cases in eurpean Royal Houses the Heirs (for exapmple Elizabeth II., or Margrethe II.) never where officailly named as Heir because it would still have been possible for their fathers to have a son.

This post in the abdication thread indicates government and IHA intend to keep Akishino-no-miya. I don't recall new titles beyond "Koshi" aka Crown Prince for Fumihito in the abdication bill regarding the Akishino family. While it's reasonable to assume Kiko will be titled Crown Princess, I expect Mako, Kako, and Hisahito to remain Princess/Prince of Akishino or perhaps use the combinations "Koshi-Akishino-no-miya" or "Akishino-no-miya-Koshi."

The "childhood" titles are not dropped at 20. When the media was more formal, Sayako as still called Nori-no-miya at the time of her engagement and she was 35 then. Was Naruhito "Prince Hiro" until the investiture ceremony? Usually new titles are conferred on marriage although Prince Yoshihito of Mikasa was given Prince Katsura (Katsura-no-miya) without marriage.

On August 25th, Princess Mako attended the 35th National High School Sign Language Speech Contest held in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Ten students from across the country were selected for the competition; a 3rd year from Fukushima Prefecture who aims to be a special support teacher was the winner.

It is interesting that the media in Japan seem to refrain from referring to Hisahito as the future emperor, in spite of being clearly trained for the role and made more important than his sisters (photos and videos are released to mark his birthdays but not those of Mako and Kako). I wonder why?

The articles linked to the galleries mention Prince Hisahito will be second in succession after the abdication. Maybe referring to him as future emperor is bad form in Japan? Skipping over his uncle and father...

Yes, Ochanomizu University affiliated schools include junior and senior high schools. I don't think he'll transfer to another system although finishing elementary school is a good time to review other options. My guess is his Imperial education is being discussed rather than his academics.

He'll also benefit when Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko move to Akasaka Estate which makes me feel sad for Princess Aiko since she'll be further way from most relatives when her family moves to the Imperial Palace.

Princess Mako visited Fukui Prefecture October 1-2 for the 73rd National Sports Festival. On October 1st, she visited Ichijodani Asakura Clan Historic Ruins and attended basketball and kendo competitions.
On October 2nd, Princess Mako visited the Paper & Culture Museum and watched softball and table tennis competitions.
