Prince Akishino, daughter Princess Mako make departures on trip for Hungary - The Mainichi
Quote:
Japanese Prince Akishino left for Hungary on Friday on a private trip to conduct livestock research and will be joined by his daughter Princess Mako there ahead of her engagement announcement next month.

[...]

Prince Akishino, the younger son of the emperor, has made research on animals his lifetime work. He has long been interested in Hungary's livestock including a rare pig species.

During their stay there, the two will visit places such as a livestock farm and a museum. They will return home together next Wednesday.

It marks the third overseas trip for the father-daughter pair, the first being one that took them to Madagascar in 2007 and the second to Laos in 2010. On both occasions, the princess accompanied her father for his research there. The princess has been engaged in museum studies research.

'Strict' Fumihito raised Princess Mako but encouraged her: The Asahi Shimbun
Quote:
Prince Fumihito has been a strict but supportive father to Princess Mako, who appears to be a mild-mannered person, but is not shy about speaking up, according to those who know both well.

[...]

Osamu Akagi, president of the Osaka University of Tourism, has advised Fumihito and his family for many years.

Akagi, 73, still vividly recalls the August 2003 trip by Fumihito and his family to Thailand. That was the first overseas trip for Mako, now 25.

Akagi said he was struck by the concentrated manner in which Mako observed the ceremony at a local university where Fumihito was presented with a honorary doctorate. She did not appear fazed or bothered by the mosquitoes that were buzzing around.

[...]

"I felt a strong desire on the part of her parents to instill in her a wide-ranging perspective," Akagi said.

While Mako appears to be a gentle and easy-going person, she is someone who will freely offer her opinion, Akagi said. Even Fumihito has admitted to losing arguments with his oldest daughter.

Yoshihiro Hayashi, the director-general of the National Museum of Nature and Science, said he was struck by Fumihito's past comment that he wanted to place importance on whatever field each of his children develops an interest in.

After Mako expressed an interest in art and cultural properties, Fumihito has visited museums and related study sessions in such fields along with his daughter.

He was apparently a very strict father to both Mako and Princess Kako. The two daughters protested about the difference in their upbringing in comparison with their younger brother, Prince Hisahito, who the two girls feel has been more pampered by their parents.

The prince’s eldest daughter, a specialist in museum studies, showed an interest in pottery wine jugs. When the director of the Museum of Ethnography explained their patterns and manufacturing process, she replied, “It’s interesting.”

According to the museum chief, the princess spent time viewing a wedding scene exhibition and gazed at the bridal clothes.

In an animal breeding area for domestic species, the prince, the second son of Emperor Akihito, looked closely at Mangalitsa pigs, for he is studying animals as his lifetime work. The Princess also showed interest in the rare Hungarian hogs.

I wonder why the future emperor is "more pampered" by his parents but his sisters, who are fated to be private citizens, were parented strictly.

I'd say being the only heir to a 2000 year old empire & the sun godess Amaterasu is a main reason for him being pampered.
