Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko are visiting a large number of museums, art galleries and other related institutes. I think they must be taking in as much cultural information as they can and to be honest, I'm not sure a week is going to be long enough!

On June 2nd, Prince Akishino visited a gourd exhibition in Hiji. He also spoke with the governor about the damage the area suffered in the recent earthquake. The prince last visited Oita Prefecture in 2008.

On the morning of June 17th, Prince Akishino visited earthquake victims in Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture. The area suffered a 6.7 magnitude earthquake on November 22, 2014. 16 households with 44 people are still living in temporary households. The Prince also received a restoration progress report. He was in the region (June 16-17) for the 51st Annual meeting of the Japan Botanical Gardens Association, which he is the president. In the afternoon, Prince Akishino visited the Hakuba Goryu alpine botanical garden.

On June 30th, Princess Kiko attended the 50th anniversary of the "2016 Bologna, Italy international picture book original picture exhibition" at Itabashi Art Museum in Tokyo.

On July 1st, Prince Akishino attended the "spring water conservation forum national convention" in Misato, Akita Prefecture. The forum is held every two years and a different city hosts. About 330 people participated this year, which also got reports on endangered species of fish and well water in Iwate Prefecture after the earthquake. Prince Akishino will visit Rokugo spring group on July 2nd.

On July 13th, Prince Akishino presented the 19th Yoshimaro Yamashina Award to Rikkyo University Professor Ueda Keisuke in Tokyo. The award is given to researchers and organizations of ornithology.

On July 14th, Princess Kiko attended several events in Yamagata Prefecture.
  • Soup kitchen training for disaster relief at the "Yamagata Logistics Center"
  • An elementary school to focus on disaster prevention education
  • New pharmaceutical Araya plant, where the Princess spoke to employees who donated blood at a blood donation vehicle.
On July 15th, she will attend the Red Cross Convention in Tendo, Yamagata.

On July 19-20th, Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko visited sea-related events at Toyohashi and Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture.
  • Commemoration ceremony of "sea festa Higashi Mikawa"
  • Akatsukayama park, a freshwater fish aquarium
  • Sea Science Museum of life
  • Mikawa Port Kamino district
Prince Akishino, who studied fish taxonomy at Oxford and is known as a catfish specialist, shared his expertise with his wife and the breeding manager of the fish aquarium.

On July 21st, Prince Akishino attended the 50th All-Japan High School Equestrian Games' opening ceremony in Gotemba, Shizuoka Prefecture. About 180 students from 36 schools, including four schools from earthquake-hit Kumamoto Prefecture, participated in the tournament which began at 1pm.

On July 29th, Prince Akishino and Princess Mako visited the Peace Monument and Memorial Park in Hiroshima. They laid floral tributes and spoke with 10 survivors. It is the princess' first public engagement to the city. Father and daughter are in Hiroshima Prefecture to attend the National High School Cultural Festival "Hiroshima Sobun" on the 30th.

On July 30th, Prince Akishino and Princess Mako visited Hiroshima’s exhibition hall to view calligraphy from high school students. Afterwards, they attended the opening ceremony of the 40th National High School Cultural Festival 2016 Hiroshima Sobun at the Prefectural Gymnasium. The festival runs until August 3rd with 25 departments and 3400 schools from across Japan. Students from Hawaii, China, South Korea, and Mexico were also invited to the opening ceremony to perform traditional dance and music.

On August 3rd, Prince Akishino, Princess Kiko, and Prince Hisahito visited the Museum of History and Folklore in Niigata Prefecture. They examined artifacts and structures from the Jomon period.
