I have to laugh when Prince Laurent fears Claire is left alone without income from the State. Pardon monseigneur: c'est la vie. Mabel is a widow now, neither she nor her late spouse Prince Friso have ever got one penny fron the State. That is the reality for all "normal" people: what happens when I die? Prince Laurent has enjoyed so many privileges that he surely could have used a fraction of the lavish income to ensure a pension for him or his widow. Come oooon! :-(

I stand corrected. But still, Senator. Until three years ago. Just because he is the third sprout of the (then) King. The dude has lost any relation to normality.

IMO enough is enough, take away his allowance and his official duties, make it clear he is not an official representative of Belgium and let him make his own way in life.
It is not so simple. As his solicitor said, Laurent and, I would add, Claire were not allowed to work as they had to be full-time working royals. You can't expect them to start a career, much less save for retirement now that Laurent is already almost 55 and Claire is over 40. Lorenz's situation is completely different as he, like Timothy Laurence for example, was never a full-time royal and always had a career. And, contrary to what people think, Laurent has a lot of official engagements on behalf of the King and is a valuable member of the Royal House.

Laurent and Astrid really hardly can qualify as fulltime royals. And if they indeed do such a lot for the Royal House, then they are masters in hiding it because we seldom see anything. And IF we see Laurie, no matter at a military parade or at a funeral, we see an obnoxious dude with sunglasses and talking in his mobile or visibly being a man-child in his erratic behaviour. Fulltime royal? Lots of engagements? Laurent? My *rse! ;-) (To voice the general tone in Belgian media).

Prince Laurent is an embarrassment,he really needs to grow up and stop behaving like a buffoon, though I fear its too late .His poor wife/kids/parents and siblings must be at the end of their tethers with him.

In the engagement interview Claire Coombs established that she would continue to work as a surveyor. I've no recollection of when she retired, but she continued her surveying career until 2005 at the earliest.

Prince Lorenz has undertaken more official activities than Princess Claire during certain years.

Claire had 23 official events in 2016? If we take away state visits, the Fête Nationale, King's Day, maybe 16 events, which means one-and-a-half event per month and even that is hard to recollect at all.

How many of Lorenz's events were solo events as opposed to Astrid's events where he was simply accompanying his wife ? Those shouldn't really count IMHO.

On top of that, looking at recent years' figures may be deceptive as it is widely known that Laurent told Claire to scale down her public events in retaliation for the cut in his annual stipend.

No, I don't think Laurent is an "embarrassment", at least not more than many comparable junior royals in other countries. I do think he is the victim though of a smear campaign by certain sectors of the press and journalists with republican and/or separatist leanings.

I disagree. He simply has to step out of his royal Audi or Mercedes, preferrably a bit correctly dressed and no black or mirroring sunglasses (which he sometimes even wears inside), he can greet the Mayor and the audience with a few smiles instead of his obnoxious behaviour, he can "pretend" some interest instead of falling asleep, play with his mobile, or demonstratively show desinterest with crossed arms and a sturdy look. He can "play" some courteoisie when he sees his mother, a former Queen and an Italian Princess, to greet her gentlemanlike and not demonstratively humiliate her to walk past as if she was just air for him.

No it is not the media and the separatists writing him down. If Laurent was Jeanne d'Arc, than he was enthusiastly carrying the wood for his own burning fire, so to say.

The Government has sent a proposal to the Chamber to lower the dotation of Prince Laurent with € 45.000,-- for not obeying the rules (attending a reception at the Chinese Embassy without informing the Minister of Foreign Affairs). This was the latest of a number of similar not-communicated engagements of the Prince.

Last week the lawyer of the Prince wrote a letter in which was claimed the Prince's human rights were broken: no one in Belgium needs to ask permission on beforehand to meet people or to attend events. The Prime Minister has -so far- not given a reaction on Prince Laurent's letter. The Prime Minister pointed to the fact that this was a proposal and it is up to the Chamber to decide on it.

It's good to see Laurent at an engagement (a rarity!). Nice to see that the children came along to support the work of their father's foundation, too. I particularly like the first photo - the man looks so happy to see the family!
