Aftonbladet and Expressen write about the crisis at Campus Manilla, where Estelle should start her preschool class in August. The very popular principal Maija Möller Grimakova herself has described it that she was forced away from Campus Manilla. The official explanation is that the Board of Campus Manilla believes it is necessary to have a full-time principal as the number of students has grown so much in recent years. Maija Möller Grimakova has led both Campus Manilla and Fredrikshovs slottsskola at Östermalm.

Margareta Thorgren to Aftonbladet:
- We choose not to comment on this, but refer to our press release, which was sent earlier, that it is planned that Princess Estelle will start at Campus Manilla.
How do you address aspects of how school works in decisions concerning schooling for the children of the royal family?
- It's a decision taken by Princess Estel's parents and the court doesn't comment at all how the decision was taken. What is happening now is that it is planned that Princess Estelle will start at Campus Manilla.
Is it a decision that may be reassessed?
- It's always so that everything can be re-evaluated. Now this is what is planned, then everything can change. But as it is now planned, Princess Estelle will start at Campus Manilla, says Margareta Thorgren.

To Expressen:
But according to the director of the press department Margareta Thorgren, there is nothing that has so far changed Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel's plan for Estelle.
- We have issued a press release saying that Princess Estelle will start there and that planning will continue. The Crown Princess family is informed of these media events. Otherwise, we don't comment anything.

Campus Manilla, the school Estelle was told to start her preschool class in August, tries to resolve their crisis. According to Svensk Damtidning, the school wants to ensure that Estelle will start her school there. The new chairman of the Board of the School is Johan Nordenfalk, a friend of the royal family. Johan Nordenfalk is a lawyer, who is part of the circles Victoria and Daniel are. He goes to the same dinners and parties and is liked. Johan Nordenfalk and his wife Estelle were invited to king Carl Gustaf's private 70th birthday banquet.
Johan Nordenfalk's father, named Johan Nordenfalk too, attends also at private and official events with the royal family (we can see him at the photos giving Victoria a gift on her 30th birthday and with Daniel). Johan Nordenfalk (the father) has got H.M. The King's Medal 12th size gold on the Order of the Seraphim ribbon. Both Nordenfalks belong to the king's team of hunters.
Johan Nordenfalk starts as the Chairman of the Board of Campus Manilla school on 14th August.
Svensk Damtidning has tried to contact Johan Nordenfalk, without success.
Vi avslöjar! Så ska Manilla locka kvar Estelle – kungavän blir ny ordförande _ Svensk Damtidning

- It is true that I have been appointed as the new Chairman of Campus Manilla. I am entering the business now and available after I have started at my work. Until then, I can refer to the current board, writes Johan Nordenfalk in a text message to Expressen.
Expressen has taken note of an internal message sent to the school's parents where the new chairman is revealed:
"In his background, Johan has a great understanding of the meaning of the main school leadership and how to navigate to, in close collaboration with the principal, lead in an effective and trustworthy way", writes Sofia Wingren, Vice President of Campus Manilla.
"Johan has a strong commitment to Campus Manilla and has been a parent at school since its start in the autumn of 2013. He currently has two children at the school."
In the message it is said that Johan Nordenfalk will start in August 14, together with new principal Carina Hagström-Bergh.
Johan Nordenfalk currently works as Chief Operating Officer in company Catella, and has been a lawyer and co-owner of the Hamilton Law Firm. Since 2007, he has been engaged in the Gundua Foundation, which works to help improve reading and writing skills and the general educational level in the developing countries.
According to Margareta Thorgren, the recent controversies surrounding Campus Manilla have not changed Princess Estelle's school plans.
- All I can say is that Princess Estelle is scheduled to start school this autumn, she says.
Do you think it's a coincidence or strategy by the school to choose a person who is close to the royal family as a new chairman?
- I have no knowledge of that. That's their decision.
Victorias vän rekryteras – ska rädda Estelles nya skola

Victoria has been the patron of Gundua Foundation since 2007 (she is also Honorary Member of the Board of the Foundation), so she has worked with the Foundation as long as Johan Nordenfalk, who is a member of the Board of Gundua Foundation.

Victoria told yesterday in Solliden to Aftonbladet that Estelle is really eager to start school.
How does Estelle see going to school?
- With excitement. She's ready. You can follow her, said the Crown Princess.
Estelle has already begun practicing before the start of school, revealed Queen Silvia.
- She has started reading and writing. She looks very much forward to it, said Queen Silvia.

About Estelle's school start

On Tuesday 21 August Estelle begins in pre-school class at Campus Manilla's primary school, located at Djurgården. And it is not any school. Here are children of directors, cultural personalities and several of the royal family friends.
Since 2013, when the school started, it has become as one of the finest schools in Stockholm. Campus Manilla is both primary and secondary school, so the thought is probably that Estelle will go to school for a long time to come. The school is called a two-level school, ie there are two classes per year course and the primary school has about 500 students.
The Crown Princess couple has chosen this school for Estelle for various reasons. She will not only move in "right circles", the school is also close to nature.
Campus Manilla has also dance as a compulsory element in the pre-school class schedule up to the third class, something that fits the little princess perfectly. For some time, she has taken dance lessons at Base23. The school offers a lot of creative creativity. "Our morning gatherings are a mix of student performances, classical music and choir singing. Our students participate in the LEGO League and learn programming", is written on the school's website.
The students get to know international exchanges and collaborations, and all practical and theoretical experience is taught by modern technology as tools. In other words, the block and pen are exchanged for computers and tablets.
Campus Manilla has own cooks in the kitchen who cook all the food and the raw materials are locally produced and organic.
At each autumn term, 48 students are taken to pre-school class. The first priority is children who have a sibling at school. When Oscar is so big that he is going to start school, he will probably join Estelle at Manilla.

Is this like the English Boarding School; where you come home only in the Holidays?

No. It is a normal school, the children go there in the morning and after the school day they get back home. It's about 10 kilometers from Haga Palace to Campus Manilla.

We spoke about that a few pages back. It seems to be a "free" school. If I get it right, private and public are not really fitting categories for the Swedish system.

Free schools are not allowed any fees besides the individual sum from the community.
The business run schools & business run care facilities, hospitals etc are at the moment a big issue in Swedish politics with the views of the politicians divided by party lines but in the general public about 75% of the public is against running schools for profit.
Besides that putting your child in a free school is not uncommon in Sweden and mostly uncontroversial.
20% of kids attending preschool are in a free school, 15% are in primary free school & 25% are in high (16-19 years) free schools.

Thanks. I f I understood it correctly, a "free school" is not a state school then.

That's right, a free school is privately owned. That said the schools in Sweden are run by the local communities and not by the state.

Thank you LadyFinn. It sounds like a nice school but it's not surprising that whilst it's free, there will be a lot of other children from similar backgrounds to Estelle. I think it's the same for the schools of the Danish CP children and Sorghvliet for Amalia and Alexia in the Netherlands.

The 31st August is the last day as the governor of Östergötland for Elisabeth Nilsson, after eight years.
She gave an interview to Svensk Damtidning and in the interview she reminisced Estelle becoming the duchess of Östergötland and Estelle's visit in 2014.
Elisabeth Nilsson:
- We became both glad and suprised when we became the duchy for the little princess. We thought about a suitable present, and chose Estelle's Fairytale Path at Tåkern's Naturum. She was only just over two years old when she inaugurated the Fairytale Path, but she was so alert. She run at her own Path and searched Hasse Hare, a cardboard figure from a fairytale, and then she met a new fairytale figure, a frog with a crown, which called "kiss me, kiss me!". But the little princess didn't want to do that.
Princess Estelle has got her own beautiful salon with dark pink walls, yellow curtains and a stylish tile stove to the Linköping Castle. She also has an own bedroom, where a teddy bear in one bed welcomes a small child. But so far, she has not stayed there overnight, but the room is used instead by the aide-de-camp if needed.
- The Crown Princess was also here on her province hike last autumn and Prince Daniel has been here for our cooperation with The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, he is a good representative of entrepreneurship, says Elisabeth Nilsson.

The director of the press department, Margareta Thorgren about that Estelle is now seriously on her way to school age:
- Like many schoolchildren this time of year, she is preparing herself with her family.

Svensk Damtidning tells about Estelle's first day at preschool class at Campus Manilla.

Right after nine o'clock tomorrow morning Estelle will come with mom Victoria and dad Daniel to meet her new teacher.
And the day begins with a surprise! According to the information given to Svensk Damtidning, Estelle and her new classmates will get to come at a train from Djurgårdsbrunnsbron to the schoolyard.
The court arranges a photoshoot for restricted swedish media.

Estelle first day at preschool class

The children and parents have gathered together to meet eachother and the teachers. There is a lot of media to follow Estelle's first school day. Victoria and Daniel talked relaxed with the other parents and Estelle talked with other children. She was very happy and seemed to know many of the children already.

Estelle and her new school mates dance the popular flossa-dance. The children go to the train. Estelle smiles and radiates happiness. A reporter calls "Good luck to school" and Estelle answers politely "Thank you" and smiles. When the train arrives at the school, the new pre-school class students will go hand in hand with two high school students up the stairs. The school has students from preschool to upper secondary school. All families at school have been informed that there will be great attention about Estelle's school start with much media in place.

TV4's reporter tells that the media were promised that Estelle would sit at the train in a place where she could be well photographed. She sat at one place but was moved to the back of the train. A SÄPO-guard sat beside the driver. This train is from Skansen.

Photos at court website, also from the classroom.
On August 21, Princess Estelle started in pre-school class at Campus Manilla's primary school at Djurgården in Stockholm.
The princess was followed to the school start by the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel.
Below the school building, the Princess and her classmates were welcomed to the school by the older students, and then accompanied by upper sedondary school students to the schoolyard where the rector held talks and the national anthem was sung.
Then the Princess visited her classroom together with her new classmates.

Someone on Twitter said this is a private school but it doesn’t charge fees. How does this differ from a regular state school?

The Swedish members of the forum explained it here. The school is privately run, meaning it is not a state/ government school. In Sweden, however, each child receives a certain amount of money from the local community to contribute towards his/her education. That money can be directed by the parents to any school they choose, including a privately-operated school like Estelle's. The school, however, does not charge tuition fees per se.

I am not quite sure what the Swedish posters mean by "community", but, as far as I understand, it is a local government entity, similar to a municipality. Apparently, schools are under the jurisdiction of the communities, rather than the national government.

PS: I found a link in English where the Swedish system of school funding is better explained, see the section "Charter Schools" for an explanation of the difference between publicly-funded private schools and tuition-based private schools (of which there is only a handful in Sweden according to that site).
