Artlover –magazine interviewed Daniel about his interest in contemporary art
What has contemporary art to do at Djurgården? A lot, if you believe prince Daniel and Galleri Andersson/Sandström, which for the second time organizes a sculpture exhibition at a royal land. This year there are artist Eva Hild's sculptures. The editor-in-chief of Artlover got a chat with relaxed prince Daniel at a park bench.
Why Djurgården is a good place to show art?
- Contemporary art belongs to modern and vibrant city like Stockholm. We are so incredible forward looking and easy adopters in everything in Sweden. Even the Royal Djurgården can be a good arena for contemporary expressions. To me there is no conflict between the traditional and the contemporary.
What did the prince think about last year's sculpture exhibition?
- The contrast between nature at Djurgården and Tony Cragg's material and sculptures became absolutely amazing. I don't know how many MMS I received from happy walkers here at Djurgården. The place got richer! It was so cool. And right!
What is the prince's role in the project?
- I will not exaggerate my effort, but I'm an avid supporter, it's my father-in-law who makes this possible. An interview here with you, even it may seem a bit pretentious, but I still want to support because I think it's important. I definitely don't see myself as an art connoisseur. But if I can make it possible for more people to see contemporary art, it's good.
Prince Daniel gives a sympathetic and serious impression. He says it's a pleasure to learn more about art and has so far been guided by well-known personalities like Olle Granath and Bo Nilsson. He sees as much art as he can, from museum favorites such as MoMa to the art in childhood's Ockelbo. Prince Daniel would like to promote more the local art life, which has so much to offer.

Djurgården becomes an art park
Prince Daniel, who is interested in art, has been pushing for further art exhibitions at Djurgården, after the appreciated Tony Cragg exhibition last summer. In the late autumn, the king, who has the right of disposal over Djurgården, finally gave the sign of continued cooperation with Galleri Andersson/Sandström.
Eva Hild about her sculptures:
"My metalworks have a production time of several years, from original model to full scale model. They will then be molded and in this case surface treated. We got these six pieces together. It's amazing that my works can come out to an environment where they meet people and nature. I hope the sculptures with their cavities will bring a lot of discovery joy.
And that Prince Daniel on Monday will open the exhibition is also not wrong at all, according to the artist.
"Everything that spreads the art and culture is good. It's fun that Prince Daniel is engaged in this. It gives a little glamor and interest", Eva Hild says.
Galleri Andersson/Sandström has so far a three-year contract with the king. In summer 2018, passers-by will discover works by spanish Jaume Plensa. And the following year, it's american Alyson Shotz's turn to come to Djurgården. Gallerists Stefan Andersson and Sara Sandström Nilsson, who have helped businessman Krister Olsson to build up Umeå's famous sculpture park, hope for a permanent sculpture park in Djurgården.
"This is the beginning of something, we do not know where it's going. The entire Djurgården could be a sculpture park", says Stefan Andersson.
