Daniel visited today, highlighting the World Kidney Day on 9th March, Uppsala University Hospital, where experts give information at a symposium among other things about chronic renal failure.

Daniel said: "In the summer I and my external kidney, thus my father's kidney, are celebrating eight years together and it works extremely well. If you yourself aren't affected or a family member isn't suffering, maybe you don't care so much. It is the case with us humans. And a strong reason why I'm here today is that I have experience with kidney disease and what it means. One should not be too harsh and categorical, and look down on those who don't get involved. We know that over 60 percent of the Swedish people are willing to donate an organ but only 15 percent have marked it and signed up for donation. There is a lot to do".
Daniel said also: "I am very grateful and happy for my external kidney and I don't suffer from eating medicine. But as some have mentioned here, it is obvious that if you can remove the medication for patients it would help significantly. I know that you are here in Uppsala work hard to achieve that".

During the symposium, several prominent scientists and experts spoke in the field of new developments and projects that ultimately will lead to better opportunities for organ donation.
- There is a lot of knowledge. When you get more knowledge you become interested, and if you are interested, it is more likely that you want to get involved. So it's probably a lot about that, said Daniel.

Daniel commented the family's holiday to the media. Svensk Damtidning reveals that some of the couple's close friends joined the royal family during the trip. The reason for the Crown Princess Couple's long break from the royal engagements was to get some private weeks of focusing on Prince Oscar and Princess Estelle before the two children are so old that they start school. The trip was planned to the shift of the parental leave, just as many parents do. Since the holiday Daniel has the main responsibility for Oscar home at Haga.
Daniel said:
- It was nice to spend a lot of time with the children!

Daniel met on his visit also Vilma Gustavson, 15, who in May last year underwent a kidney transplant operation. Her father Leif Gustavson, 54, was the donor.
- It is always strong to meet someone, especially a young person, who, thanks to a donor's good will has got her life back. It is the finest thing you can give someone, to do so that the person can continue to live a healthy and wholesome life. These meetings are important and strong, in this case with a young girl. It has gone really well with her transplant.
Could you share some experiences?
- Absolutely. I will not go into detail about what we said, but we share something not very many people have gone through.
Prince Daniel tries at his prince role to highlight the issue of organ donation. He is also the patron of the organization "MOD - More organ donation" and tries to convince people to sign up for the donor register.
- Over 80 percent of the Swedish people want, if they for some reason would pass away, give their organs to someone who needs them. But only 15 percent have signed up to the donation register. So there is a discrepancy between what you want - and what you do. With your help, and with the help of other medias, maybe we can spread the message that one should not only think and want, but also demonstrate with action what one wants, says Prince Daniel and concludes:
- A person who sets up as a donor can save the lives of eight people.

Reporter Liv Sander from Svensk Damtidning interviewed Daniel.
The prince has told that the kidney your father donated gave you a new life.
- Yes, it gave me the opportunity to continue my life, you might say.
Now it's been eight years. How do you talk about it in the family today?
- In general it can be said that to give someone his life back by donating is incredibly big thing. It is a big thing in our family and it's great for all who are privileged to be part of it.
Is there anything you will or have told the kids?
- It is no secret and it is clear that the children have and will become aware of it.
In Sweden, 80 percent say they are willing to donate but only 15 percent have signed up on the donation register. Not everyonel announces his wish to his family. How should we talk about this?
- I think that you in the media and anyone who can participate and spread the message has an important role. As we heard today, Sweden is one of Europe's most generous nations in terms of if you are willing to donate your organs if you happen to have an accident - but few take the plunge. There is an incredible discrepancy between what one is willing to do and what they show in action. It's about spreading knowledge and talk to each other about it.
It is a difficult subject.
- Yes. It is clear that for me who is inside the subject and has this experience, it is not so dramatic. And it's much easier to talk about difficult issues when you are healthy than when you are approaching death.
The article has also a link to the donation register.

Upsala Nya Tidning UNT's questions to Daniel:
Have you learned something new today, after listening to the speakers?
- Yes I think so. There has been relevant lectures which raised several things I have not known. It's also fun that the University Hospital is so at cutting edge.
Why people should donate?
- You can think like this: if I was involved in an accident - would I like to have another person's organ? If you answer yes, then I think you should donate.
Prince Daniel himself is kidney transplant recipient and patron of the organizations MOD (More organ donation) and the International Society of Nephrology.
Do you remember what you were thinking when you received a new kidney?
- That I had been very lucky. I feel incredibly healthy and lively today. It can also be said that it goes fine for most people.
