Crown Princess Victoria's Hikes in the Swedish Provinces: 2017-2018-2019

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Aftonbladet's reporter met Victoria at the last hike.

For two years, Crown Princess Victoria has hiked in Sweden's all 25 provinces.
- It has been a fantastic experience I have been involved with. All impressions from this varied nature to all meetings with people. All the small bouquets you have received to all discussions, it has so many aspects, says Crown Princess Victoria to Aftonbladet, on her way down Fulufjället.
On all hikes, anyone who has had the desire got to come along - and many have heard the call.
On the very last hike, in Fulufjället national park in northwestern Dalarna, right on the border with Norway, Aftonbladet followed. And not only we.
Crown Princess Victoria also got an unexpected companionship by her sister-in-law Princess Sofia, who is raised in Älvdalen and wanted to go on a hike.
Just in time for the train to go from central Stockholm at 06.15 two happy and lively princesses appeared on the platform. That the night before both of them had been at the Polar Prize Gala at the Grand Hôtel is not noticed for a moment.
Now, just hours later, the fancy gala dresses were exchanged for well-made hiking boots, jeans and sports jackets.
As the only one the Crown Princess also carried the whole hike a dark blue Kånken backpack. What she had in it is nobody who knows - but it was heavy.
After a lunch out in the open, the Crown Princess tells during the hike about her vision - and why she has gone all these miles through Sweden:
- I want to highlight our nature. We need to go out and my hope is to inspire others. It's a great experience, a benefit. Sweden is amazing.
And Princess Sofia fills in:
- It does good for both body and soul. And it's available - it's for everyone, she says.
On Instagram, she thanks her sister-in-law for the hike: "It was honorable", she writes.
The group includes both nature conservationists and mountain rescuers, but the one who is most concerned about everyone in the group is Crown Princess Victoria.
- We can help to make sure that it is a good pace for everyone? she says - or:
- How are we doing?
Followed by two thumbs in the air.
She takes the time with everything and everyone and it is impressive; no schedule is too tight that she does not have time to take a selfie with anyone who wants to, watch the scouts' play, receive drawings and greet everyone and look everyone in the eyes, young and old.
To pass with a hurry is not Crown Princess Victoria's tune. She sees everyone - even out in nature.
On the way up to Old Tjikko, the world's oldest tree, it turns out who has fitness - and who doesn't.
While we are some who have full focus on surviving the steep climb and the high steps up to Fulufjället, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Sofia walk with light steps, as they went on flat ground.
When I have to sit down and fetch my breath for a while, Victoria laughs. Just wipe the sweat in the forehead and step on, one step at a time.
Once up, we get the salary - there he stands, all alone up on the barren mountain, the knotty and ancient Old Tjikko. The five-meter-high spruce is cloned from roots that are 9 550 years old - from the ice age.
- What a place to choose to grow on, says Victoria.
Old Tjikko is Norwegian - and until the year 1644 the land we stand in there is also Norwegian.
The view of the blue mountains is miles away.
- I love these spaces, says Victoria.
It shows.
Wants to tell to Estelle
On the way down - the same way we came - Aftonbladet gets an exclusive chat with the Crown Princess. It is difficult to keep track of both feet, words and pencil at the same time, but Victoria talks about lichens, birds, trees and forest fires and how fragile our ecosystem is - it is an insight she brings with her, especially from today's hike.
When asked if it doesn't feel sad that the hikes are over, she says:
- Yes, actually. It's a little with sadness I go here. It is an end to a long project, which has given a lust for more and something to carry on. I have got to experience and learn so much, not just about nature but also about our cultural history. This is something I will pass on to Estelle, among other things.
- My big hope is that she will think it is great to stay out in nature. It has given me so much and I wish she should feel the same desire and joy.
Princess Estelle, who would have liked to accompany her on the mountain.
- Yes, she wanted to come. But now I've been scouting, so I have to take her next time.
Perhaps she will be able to redo Mom's province hikes, in 30 years or so.
Victoria laughs at the thought:
- Yeah, she'll take the celebration. Now I have scouted.
Crown Princess Victoria tells us that she would be more than happy to hike with her family, but so far it has not been so long walks, for explanatory reasons.
- It is mostly walking, but I have great thoughts and hopes about it, Oscar is a little too small yet. But really it's just to seize it, she says.
When I ask for some training tips - she laughs and knocks out with her arm:
- This is good training, she says.
And well aware of my near-death experience on the way up, she says:
- This is perhaps the most difficult interview you have made, but you have managed it wonderfully, I think.
After a visit to the mighty waterfall, it is time to go home again.
Njupeskär is Sweden's highest waterfall, 93 meters with a free fall of 70 meters - and Victoria doesn't give up until everyone has got a chance to see it up close.
Then she is satisfied.
Before the finish, she is met by violins - Linda Axelsson, Ing-Marie Bergman and Maria Nilsson from Älvdalen's folk musicians who lead her to the goal with Älvdalen's bridal march.
And there is this year's kransmas, nervous Victor Sticko, with a wreath and a Dala horse.
- Oh, oh, what a surprise, which reception, says Crown Princess Victoria and gives Victor a big hug.
He responds by inviting her to an optional start in Vasaloppet.
Both Princess Madeleine and Princess Sofia have run Tjejvasan, Sofia also Stafettvasan, but Victoria has not yet tried.
- It can be thought of, she replied, Victor Sticko says. But if she does that, I stand there with a wreath again. I promise.

The environmental threat involves the hikng crown princess: "We must shape up"
Stor intervju_ Klimathotet oroar kronprinsessan Victoria

Victoria said in the interview part:
The Crown Princess's wonderful hike through Sweden
Crown Princess Victoria has started her own version of Nils Holgersson's wonderful trip through Sweden. She will hike through Sweden's all provinces. She is deeply concerned about the climate change she sees. Di Weekend followed the hikes in Blekinge, Närke and Dalsland.
She performs a kind of informal eriksgata in forest and land. She started in September 2017, and when this is written, she has performed just over half of the hikes.
"I want to highlight the unique nature we have, which is an incredible treasure and is just around the corner. Experiencing new doesn't need to be difficult or costly. It's really just opening the door. I want to encourage outdoor life, movement and the importance of breaking the sedentary, and I'm convinced that those who live in nature are also more keen to protect it", she says.
The hikes are planned six months in advance, and arranged in cooperation with the county administrative boards. In addition to hiking, Victoria has been riding a bike in Närke, fishing in Gotland, horse plowing in Västergötland, skiing in Lapland and canoeing in Dalsland, to take some examples.
The public is invited to join every hike, and the non-profit organisations will join up with experts who guide the tours. Victoria says: "I feel humble in front of all the non profit organisations and driving spirits Sweden has. In many places, they hold together interests, people and communities".
School classes, sports clubs and other child groups connect along the way, and Victoria receives drawings, cards and flowers. A diligent adjutant is at hand to take care of all things which are given to her.
Crown Princess Victoria doesn't write autographs, but she lets herself be photographed, while Säpo-guards are close to protect Sweden's future head of state.
She received her nature interest in the mother's milk. She has called her parents for "all-weather parents". With her father she made bread on a stick, put net, smoked fish and drove a tractor.
"Both of my parents can very much about nature, and mom told us about animals and plants and how the ecosystem hangs together in a playful way. We were always out in nature. We were in the woods, in the archipelago and on the mountain, among other things, we walked along Kungsleden".
As a child, she had her own bees at Solliden, and today there are beekeepers at both Solliden and Haga.
Victoria and Daniel are both eager of continuing interest in nature to their children, and the family often finds outdoor activities. Estelle has gone in all weathers preschool and can already name a large number of fish species.
"My first thought was to bring her on these hikes, but it would probably have been a little too demanding for her", says Victoria.
She is especially concerned with sea and fishing issues, and when she visited Bohuslän, she picked up junk on a beach on Nordkoster along with a school class.
"The purpose of the hikes wasn't really talking about environmental threats, but we have talked about that naturally in every place. Threats such as invasive species, eutrophication of the Baltic Sea and low oxygen levels. We have also talked about how chemicals affect nature and how dangerous substances, such as drug residues and microplasts, penetrate the treatment plants and adversely affect the ecosystem. We have also talked about the importance of mower beds, restoration of eelgrass beds and how important it is that there is room for all species for the whole to function, like mixed forests of different ages. What is striking and very disappointing, is all garbage found in nature and we only have to blame ourselves. There we have to shape up".
The Crown Princess couple want to teach their children how to live climate-savvy. Both Estelle and Oscar know how to separate garbage.
"You don't have to scare the children, but it's never too early to start talking about climate issues. Children are wise and incredibly curious. Sometimes I think they are wiser than we, because they clearly understand the interaction between people, nature and the environment. We have many such discussions at home. Estelle is well aware of the occurrence of plastic in the seas, the problem of littering and what the eutrophication does with the fish".
She is worried about the extreme weather phenomena that are becoming more common throughout the globe.
"I feel a clear worry, definitely. Now we have just had a record warm summer with forest fires, drought and very little water. There is a lot on our planet that does not follow the normal pattern. Now, this is the planet we have, and the wisest would be, if we live in a sustainable way, and take care of what we have".
"We need to think about how we produce things and make wise choices when we consume. It is gratifying to see that industry taking greater producer responsibility. But as a consumer, it's not easy to know what we consume actually costs to the nature and environment. For example, you have no idea how many thousands of liters of water are consumed when produced all from clothes to mobile phones".
"My real hope with these hikes is that more people will see the nature and get a relationship with it. Otherwise, we will not care for it and see the signs that animals and nature are feeling bad. Afterwards it may be too late to do something about it".
Kronprinsessans underbara vandring genom Sverige - Di Weekend

That is a great article describing the hikes, and Victoria's interview part is very good. Great to see that some newspapers still do good articles and don't only tell about what a royal (woman) wore.

I could not agree more! :flowers: Both the Crown Princess and the media should be commended for it, and thank you very much for taking the time to inform us with these translations.

Victoria's adventures on horseback, in a canoe and in the mountains
Crown Princess Victoria went on tour in all of Sweden's provinces.
Now comes a photo book about the adventure.
The idea for the province hikes was born when the Crown Princess planned her 40th birthday celebration.
The idea was to hike for one day in all 25 provinces of the country in two years. The Crown Princess wanted to experience Swedish nature during different seasons. And so it became.
The adventure began in Västergötland in September 2017 with a trip along the pilgrimage route between Varnhem and Hornborgasjön. It all ended in June 2019 with a hike in Fulufjället National Park in Dalarna.
Just in time for Crown Princess Victoria's birthday next week, the book "Upptäck Sverige", written by Johan Erséus and published by Max Ström, will be published. The book contains hundreds of pictures from the hikes.
- I participated in 24 of 25 hikes. Unfortunately I missed Skåne. It is an exciting book, says Pelle T Nilsson, a photographer who has followed and documented the royal family for many years.
Pelle T Nilsson, whose photo agency has contributed about 30 photos to the book, says that the Crown Princess walked almost 400 km in total.
- The Crown Princess went everything from skiing to sledding, she rode a horse, hiked, paddled a canoe and climbed mountains. It was quite demanding, he says.
Do you have any special memories?
- I don't remember anything special with the Crown Princess. But a lot of strange things happened on the trip. People stumbled, hit themselves and were chased by cows. The Crown Princess did nothing like that, but it was some governor who fell over and got nosebleeds.
For Pelle T Nilsson, it was a wonderful nature experience.
- We live in a fantastic country. It was a privilege to visit all these places. And you realize that you could really do that every day. It was amazing.

Now all royal fans can enjoy a new book about Victoria.
Here is a description of her many exciting journeys in Swedish nature.
It was a long time since our beautiful crown princess was portrayed in a book. But now comes a work where the royal journeys in all the Swedish provinces are depicted.
The book "Upptäck Sverige med kronprinsessan Victoria" is written by Johan Erséus and promises a real treat for all royalists.

At TV4's News morning was on 14th July a presentation of the book "Upptäck Sverige med kronprinsessan Victoria", a book of Victoria's hikes at Sweden's all 25 provinces in 2017-2019.
Publisher Jeppe Wikström told about the book, it seems that he was with at many of the hikes. He says that Victoria has an enormous interest in nature, and she writes very nicely at the book. And there is so much to see in Sweden, and that Victoria shows at this book. Some photos from the book are shown. Wikström says "Some had a hard time keeping up with her, because she is quite fit, our Crown Princess, She held a good tempo". He says also that he thinks Victoria didn't have any favourite among the hikes, she liked them all. And she loves all kinds of weathers. But sometimes she needed a moment for herself, there is a photo of Victoria on Gotland, where she sits alone on the beach and looks at the sea. Wikström says about the book that it is a fantastic inspiration that Victoria gives us.

Victoria's foreword at the book, from Svensk Damtidning's article.
My fantastic journey through Sweden began with my 40th birthday, when I wanted to hike in all Swedish provinces. But the idea existed much earlier. In my role, I get to visit many exciting and beautiful places, but in Sweden the trips usually go to the larger cities. I wanted to see other parts of the country. I longed to see more of nature.
As a child, I read in school about Nils Holgersson who flew on a goose all over Sweden and it felt like I was on his journey. I have the book at home on the bookshelf and have read it to my children several times. I got the strongest feeling from Nils Holgersson's journey before the children were born. It was the spring of 2010, a few weeks before Daniel and I got married.
Benny Andersson had written the music for what would be the song ”Vilar glad. I din famn” (Resting happily. In your arms), and which was to be performed at our wedding with Kristina Lugn's text. We first heard the melody in Benny's studio on Skeppsholmen. The music gave me such a strong experience that I traveled through Sweden - I saw for my inner forests, fields, lakes, sparkling sea and large mountains. When Benny played, I thought of Nils Holgersson's journey across Sweden. And that melody has been in the back of my mind during all the province hikes.
For me, it was obvious that I wanted to walk through the provinces. I really like to hike, to discover the world at just the right speed so that the eye and the soul have time. Then the hikes also fit in with Daniel's and my commitment to break the sedentary lifestyle and highlight the importance of movement. It doesn't cost that much to get out, you just need a good pair of shoes. And of course it helps if you have a thermos!
With these hikes, I wanted to emphasize the value of outdoor life and at the same time show what an incredible treasure nature offers each of us. What makes Swedish nature extra special is that it is accessible to everyone, thanks to our ancient right of everyman's right.
My own interest in nature was aroused when I was little. I was with Mulle and studied anthills, cones and other exciting things. But above all, my fascination with nature has been founded by my interested and knowledgeable parents, who both have a special ability to see both the big and the small in nature and impart the knowledge. They have given me a deep respect and an understanding of how everything is connected.
Dad was interested in forest management and environmental issues long before it became trendy. Both my dad and mom can read nature, but while my dad often walks around and reflects, my mom has been more educational and teaching. Just a few generations ago, it was a matter of course that parents passed on their knowledge of nature to their children, but now it is not as common. That's why I feel so grateful to have grown up with this joy of discovery.
During the two years that the hikes took place, I got to experience a lot of new, beautiful, exciting and educational. After each hike, I felt like I wanted to come back there with my children and show all the nice things. I would also like them to experience Sweden and everything that has given me so much.
In addition, I think that it is often enriching experience of nature for us adults to be out and about with children. They see things in a completely different way. They make us aware of things we have missed or don't remember - I will never forget the first time Estelle noticed her own shadow. It was incredibly special! Or when she first tasted snow. You yourself have forgotten these experiences. But with children, you get a second chance to discover such things again.
The experiences outdoors are of course dependent on the weather, nature is unpredictable. During a hike it can sometimes be a bit tough, but it can not be sunny all the time. Just keep going - and enjoy everything that happens when it rains or blows. During my hikes, it also became clear that Sweden is a long country. One early summer we managed to spot the flowering of lilacs in several different places, as the heat crept north. I was extra happy, because I had had such a hectic spring that I completely missed the lilacs in Stockholm!
In addition to these great nature experiences, this has also been something of an inner journey. I really came to appreciate the quiet moments and the peace that can occur in nature. They could occur on a beach on Gotland, on a cliff in Bohuslän or on a mountain in Ångermanland. Before the very first hike in Västergötland, I met the dean in a chapel; he blessed the hikes and gave me a note with words to think about during the journey that actually began on a pilgrimage route. I had the little note in my pocket on all the hikes and often thought of the words that were written there: Freedom. Slowness. Simplicity. Ease. Silence. Sharing. Spirituality.
There are many I would like to thank in this book - so many that the book would probably be twice as thick if I mentioned them all. I would still like to especially thank all the county administrative boards, led by our governors. Within the county administrative boards, there is an incredible amount of expertise in both nature, culture and the environment - and I have learned so much from them. Then I would also like to thank the representatives of all associations and organizations who in various ways contributed to the hikes. A big thank you to you and to all the other fellow hikers - by the way, a nice word that we should perhaps use more often: fellow hikers.
Now I hope that this book will inspire even more people to discover Sweden's rich and varied nature. And even if there are many opportunities to travel in the country, you can always experience something new right where you live. It doesn't have to be expensive or cumbersome. It is often enough to just open the door and go out.

Article in finnish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet yesterday about Victoria's hikes and the book "Upptäck Sverige med kronprinsessan Victoria"

Hike with Victoria through Sweden
Crown Princess Victoria learned to thrive in nature already as a child. The interest has continued and when the princess turned 40, she wanted province walks as a gift. Now she has stepped on throughout her vast realm.
When Selma Lagerlöf wrote her classic Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey through Sweden, she made a fatal mistake. The book was ordered as a geography book about Sweden but Lagerlöf forgot the province of Halland and Nils Holgersson's adventures did not become the textbook it was intended to be.
Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey through Sweden is one of the favorites on Crown Princess Victoria's bookshelf, but when she set out to walk the 25 Swedish provinces, she was careful not to repeat Selma Lagerlöf's mistake.
Halland with its heather moors, seaside resorts and fantastic coast thus gets a visible place in the magnificent work Upptäck Sverige med kronprinsessan Victoria. The book is a sumptuous combination of history, geography and biology, but it is also a hymn to the varied Swedish provinces and to the royal family Bernadotte.
Sweden's cheerful crown princess walks, skis, paddles, sleds, rides, plows, throws lassos and barks pine, among other things. She seems to be always in a good mood and shares knowledge she acquired from her father King Carl XVI Gustaf.
The book is written by Johan Erséus who complements the nature observations with a bit of royal gossip that is connected to the places the Crown Princess visits. We learn, among other things, that the painter prince, Prince Eugen, fell in love with Scania in the old days, that the deposed king Gustav IV Adolf lived at Gripsholm Castle waiting to be expelled from the country and that two thousand men, women and children were murdered when Erik IV started Ronneby massacre in Blekinge in 1564.
For the Swedish tourism authorities, Upptäck Sverige med kronprinsessan Victoria is a treasure. The photographs document breathtaking views and do justice to the varied Swedish nature. The book is published by Bokförlaget Max Ström.
