Just like Dylan, Elijah, Mason, Madison, Kayla, and Haiden, are currently very popular in America for newborns. But those were not the norm 20 or 30 years ago.
Actually, my 10 year old daughter went to kindergarten with a number of Isabellas. It was even then a rather popular name. With regards to name norms 20 or 30 years ago, I do not see why the Danish royals have to abide by that. It is not as if the principle of the 'fixed' first son names of Frederik/Christian extends to all other royal names. Joachim was an unusual name at the time, Felix was not that common either, but nice that new names are introduced

I think it differes widely from one country to the other how names are perceived. I for one decidedly do not like the name Irene (yes I know it is the name of Constantine's younger sister, but still....).
And as to the thee identical first letters - the A's - well, that is a matter of taste I suppose. It can easily sound a bit 'tacky' IMO. I think the name Catharina-Amalia is very pretty, very regal, I am a bit indifferent about Alexia and I don't like the name Ariane - to my ears it sounds like a Disney character (and I don't think it was the norm at the Dutch court 20 odd years ago )

Again, it must have a lot to do with the one's own nationality the way you perceive a name.

Yes, perception has a great deal to do with it. Isabella is a beautiful name. However, my grandmother has a sister named Isabelle. They/we always called her Izzy (rhymes with dizzy). That is why I don't like Isabella. I wouldn't want the child to grow up being called Izzy.

I adore the name Isabella, but then my newest grandchild is Isabella Sofia so I better like the name. BTW we are calling her Bella (but I secretly prefer Izzy).

yes, I also think that the 3 A's sound la little tacky.

And I adore Leonor(re) or whatever its version could be, but when everybody wants your daughter name's for their children isn't very funny yet.

I think Thyra is the name in question. When we were discussing names for Isabella it was one of the old danish names mentioned. The pronunciation is Tewra. This was confirmed by Q. Margarethe in the documentary "A Royal Family". She also confirmed that the pronunciation for Dagmar is Dowmar.

Oh, it's Thyra? Then I take it back, because I like the name Thyra and Dagmar too. Anyways, thank you wymanda.

I am not really fond of Prince Bernhard's sons' names. Neither Samuel or Benjamin are regal.

Earl Harewood ( QEII's first cousin, son of Princess Mary) has a grandson called Tewa, he's the son of the Hon. James Lascelles. Tewa has a sister called Tanit.

Yes, Tewa and Tanit are children from James's second marriage with Lori Susan Lee (div. 1996).

Lady Helen Windsor called her eldest Columbus. I really think that is a name better seen on a map.

oh, I really don't like that as a name, I can't even think of a way of shortening the name into something that sounds ok!

I'm not too fond of the name Luana. Zaria is actually ok and exotic-sounding. Luana is just strange.

I don't dislike the name Ariane itself, I just don't like the name in regard to the little Dutch princess. Its ending is odd when placed with the names of her sisters. AmalIA, AlexIA, AriaNE. It sounds flatter and more boring. I think it would have sounded 50 times better had she been named Ariana. Amalia, Alexia, and Ariana fit together much better.

I always thought the name Beatrice was a little odd, but perhaps that's because I once had a dog named Beatrice. Enough said!

I really don't like the name Maud either. Every time I hear it, I think of an old overweight woman smoking a cigarette, and I hate associating that image with Princess Martha-Louise's adorable daughter!

There is a problem with some names in a foreign language. I have always liked the name Dominick but here in Portugal everyone I have met says ugggh.
My great grandmother was Isabella, my grandmother was Isabel and so was my mother so in honour of them my second daughter got Isabel as her second name. I donīt like Eugenie to start off with everyone seems to pronounce it in a different way. I have heard the Queen pronouncing it and she puts the emphasis on the Eu, it sounds a bit like Youjinny (if you are pronouncing it in English of course).

New name - Molyneux. It's one of the middle names of the 8 Earl of Carnarvon.
Btw. that's a surname too.

If you listen to the way that WA & Maxima pronounce Ariane's name, it does sound like Arian"a", so it ends up sounding like it very much belongs with her sister's names (the soft "a" ending).
