The worst names are Luana (Nederlands), Zaria, Zara, Xan and Ariane. They don't sound royal IMO.

Ragnhild, Ingrid, Astrid, Hubertus, Joachim, Albert... are all sounding very old-fashioned to me. At least in Germany these are typical names when you are born between 1930 and 1950. (Old names like Emil, Luisa, Marie, Anna, Elisabeth, Emma..... are very often used in Germany at the moment, but not the Ragnhild...ones.)

The royal names i like best: Mabel, Amalia, Alexia, Isabella, Eugenie (but pronounced french- Öschenni), Leonor, Sophie/Sofia, Victoria, Elisabeth, James, Charles, Emmanuel, Alexander,

I like Beatrice and Eugenie. Whatever people may say about them being old-fashioned, they are historic names in the BRF. With a name like Fergie, you'd expect crazy names for the York girls, but they went traditional, and I like that. Similar with Louise and James, William and Henry and Peter (thought not Zara). I was delighted when I heard that Lord and Lady Nicholas Windsor named their son Albert. I like royals with traditional names. Ariane is a "new" name, but it as least SOUNDS royal, unlike Zaria.
I like the name Zaria....

The most unfortunate name for the Dutch princesses must be Anita btw, in the Netherlands people use that name to refer to white female trash (in Flanders they use the name Marina for that btw).

"Mabel" makes me think of some old dumpy hausfrau...I HATE it!!

I don't like "Maud" either...I immediately think of some ugly old spinster. When Diana named her second child "Harry" I was horrified. I know it's a nickname for Henry but I don't like Henry either!

And I realize that "Beatrice" is a very Royal name but I really dislike it. I LOVE the name "Eugenie"...very classy and elegant!

Ernst August! No matter how much history is behind it I just don't like it.

I don't like the names Adolphus or Aspasia. Makes me think about Adolf Hitler or some disease.

I don't like the names Beatrice, Eugenie or Louise. I am also tired all the "similiar" names in the royal house right now. Do you think we have enough Leonor, Leonore, & Eleonore.
Another one I think is too old fashion and not very pretty is Maud.
To me, all of Princess Astrid's daughters names sound the same, couldn't they think of anything original?
I like Amalia, Alexia and Ariane, Christian and Isabella

I'm enjoying this thread. I guess there are some unusual names out there but for some reason when it's royalty that we are speaking about it just seems to work. I don't mind the old fashioned names at all. Maud is old fashioned but somewhat saved in my opinion with it being followed up with Angelica. It's the more exotic choices that I mind, like Luana, Zara, and Zaria. Those are the strangest to me. I also don't really like the copycat syndrome with the different versions of Leonor and Eleonor. But if you think about it something similar happened last generation: Philippe, Felipe, Charles-Philippe(duke of Anjou), and Carl Philip.

I have a weird pet peeve when these royal parents switch between a more edgy/exotic name back to a very simple/normal royal name and vice versa. Example: Frederik and Joachim, also Christian and Isabella(yes, I know it's a royal name but a little out of the norm in Denmark as it would seem).

Isabella is by no means an exotic name in Denmark - according to Danist Statistics (Hvor mange hedder... - Danmarks Statistik) there are by now in 2008 4004 registered Isabellas........

I have to agree, Beatrice and Eugenie aren't real winners for me. Eugenie is hard to say for English-speakers. (And Beatrice reminds me of my great-aunt, whom we called Aunt Beat.) A recent one, Magali, is also different. Maybe it's popular in The Netherlands? I saw it was the name of this little girl's godmother.

At the time of Isabella's birth, it was the 21st most popular name in Denmark! It's not exotic at all, just another way to say Elizabeth :)

And Magali is the name of Princess Aimee's sister. It's French, I'm pretty sure.

Isn't Magali Portuguese/Brazilian? When a Portuguese friend of mine heard the name he said there was a Brazilian cartoon character with the same name.

The name Magali in The Netherlands is something that posh parents who want to be different give to their children. I suppose there should be several Magali's playing on the Dutch hockeyfields this morning.

I really don't see the point in commenting about names of people who have married into Royal families. I'm sure Senor & Senora Zorrieguetti didn't sit down when their daughter was born & saying "Oh we can't call her Maxima because she will be Crown Princess of the Netherlands & royal watchers won't like the name".

Neither did W-A say/think "I can't marry her because her name doesn't sound like a princess"

I didn't say specifically that Isabella was an exotic name! I have a feeling some(or at least 2 posters) are taking exotic to mean something bad maybe perhaps because this is the worst names thread. I like the name Isabella a lot. But did I ever consider that there would someday be a Princess of Denmark named that? Nope. Matter of fact many of us at the time of her birth commented that it did seem out of the norm in Denmark. And even though as you have proven, it is popular in Denmark but that is right now, this year. I suppose I was considering years ago, I doubt 20 or 30 years ago it was a popular choice for little girls. Just like Dylan, Elijah, Mason, Madison, Kayla, and Haiden, are currently very popular in America for newborns. But those were not the norm 20 or 30 years ago.

I just used the Danes as an example of more simple names combined with a different sounding name. Exotic meaning it is different, unique, or even elegant sounding. IN MY OPINION, Isabella doesn't quite fit in with Fred, Mary, and Christian. It's a little more elegant(exotic)sounding. Whereas the rest of the names in her immediate family are more simplistic. Same as her uncle Joachim's name looks out of place next to Fred. Or over in Belgium: Elisabeth(standard go-to royal name), Gabriel, Emmanuel, and Eleonore. All of those are different and unique sounding compared to Elisabeth. Or in the Netherlands: Catharina-Amalia, Alexia, Ariane. C-A's definitely sounds the most elegant sitting next to her sisters names. And in Spain: Juan, Pablo, Miguel, and Irene( a Greek name after those very Spanish names). I understand why the name was likely choosen by them but still it seems a little out of place next to the other family names. And a very non-royal example, in my own family there is a Nick, a Mike, and an Aurora(very uncommon in America and definitely the oddball name of the group. It's just a weird thing that I personally notice when I see the names of a family.

As and American I can saftely say we borrow names from all countries!
I think we make up a few as well. I was thinking Isabella wouldn't be so common in Denmark but I guess names are becoming more univerisal now
