British people don't know that they exist let alone who they are
Of course many know they exist, they just aren't much interested. This works in well because neither is the BBC.

Very, very few know they exist. The morning of the royal wedding last year, I went to a champagne breakfast with a large group of female colleagues. All these women are extremely bright and well-travelled. I was the only one at the party who could point out the foreign royals. From what I could gather almost all of them had no idea that monarchies exist in other European countries. They knew there were royals in the Middle East, partly because we work in corporate banking which involves clients who are expanding into Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Dubai etc. etc.

Then again, the ignorance isn't exactly surprising. Apparently a quarter of British young people confuse Winston Churchill with a nodding dog who advertises insurance on TV.

As we're putting it down to personal experience, and myself having lived in England (of which I've spent near half of my life) and travelled extensively throughout Scotland, I know many many people who are aware of Europes monarchies; they just wouldn't be able to identify many royals on an indavidual basis. These people comprise of a number of varying occupations and have travelled and do travel frequently.

Again, I'm not suggesting everybody (in the broader sense - especially the youth of today) realises or could name a royal house or indeed the name of a foreign European monarch but the general awareness that they exist is there.

Many of the people I work with are also well-traveled and intelligent, yet when Prince Friso was injured while skiing, many assumed he was a less well-known member of the British Royal Family!

I recall I was very startled by this, but in retrospect I don't know why. I think most Americans don't have a clue about any monarchies other than the British.

(Another personal experience: my husband was once challenged by someone from Oslo to name the King of Norway! Thanks to me, he actually knew the answer. His questioner was totally shocked; he hadn't previously met an American who knew!)

I have a feeling that here in the States we won't be getting a broadcast (unless some random cable channel chooses to take it on). I don't think there would be enough interest anyway, and the media won't want to waste its' time with a minor royal family of a country most Americans haven't heard of. From my own personal experience, I found out about Luxembourg after my mom bought me an issue of 'LIFE' magazine back in '98 that dealt with royal families from around the world.

Yeah - instead they will broadcast cartoons and reality-shows.

I think there would be an audience. No one has had the bright idea yet - or the passion to press it. Hmmm......

Maybe somewhere, somehow somebody will come up with the idea of a Royalty Channel where the focus is totally on all things royal in the world. Heaven knows there's dedicated channels for everything else under the sun.

You're giving me an idea. It actually doesn't have to be a Channel - though that would be totally cool. I mean - there's a weather channel of all things. I'm going to nose around a bit - ask some questions. One never knows - a flea in the right person's ear might bring unexpected results.

Sad, but true. I think it's the reason I don't watch television (I'm not even hooked up to cable or anything, because there's not a single program I want to spend my time watching). You're right; there would be an audience, if the media found a way to present the topic in a fashion that would be captivating for an average Joe. Again, sad, but unfortunately, in order for anything to take a strong hold, it has to appear to the masses, not just the small amount of people who are really interested in a particular topic/concept .

Oh, that kind of channel would make really want to subscribe to a cable provider. Too bad no one has picked up on this yet, since the average Joe is totally fine with watching small snippets of gossip on the glamour side of being royal from shows like 'Entertainment Tonight' and 'Access Hollywood'.

Lets hope that the flea in the ear is related to the fly on the wall that just loves to follow royalty!

Six degrees of separation around here. There's always somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody. It's a money game, in the end - and that in itself can be a good thing. It's all about persistence, too, which is a time issue.

I'll get back to you - or better yet, watch for the announcement.

But you know what they say about one's hobbies.....I already know a few posters on this forum who could be anchors on a nightly 'Royal Report'. Crazier things have happened.

There is a channel on AT&T Uverse called Wealth TV. They do a number of documentary-type shows about Europe's rulers over history along with the usual shows about homes, yachts, and resorts for the mega wealthy. The last one I watched was a four-part program about the Habsburg Empire of Austria. I know they've also done a few programs about the Middle Eastern royals but that was a while ago.

Your experience is entirely different to mine, having lived and worked in the UK for my whole life. No European royal wedding has ever had any meaningful media coverage here. None have been shown live. There'll be a few photos in Hello or Majesty, but their circulation is miniscule. Nor are there ever news reports about royal births. Most Britons couldn't point out Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands etc. etc. on a map, let alone tell you what form of government they've got.

There was one or two articles in the UK press about King Juan Carlos recently, but that was because of the scandal of the elephant hunting with his mistress while Spain's economy imploded. There was a bit of coverage after the Monaco wedding, but it tended to centre on the 'Prisoner Princess' story almost exclusively.

The knowledge and interest just isn't there.

You just basically described how it is here in the States. People simply don't care. It doesn't interest them.

Most people will experience different impressions and facets of a culture, and that they should live within the same region does not then mean that one experience will be collectively incurred by all.

Naturally my experiences will be quite, if not entirely, different to yours. Hence the reason why I know many folk who are aware that Europe is made up of various other monarchies.

I agree that the interest, in this day and age, to be educated on regional structures isn't terribly present, per say, but then again I live on an island continent that is itself a constitutional monarchy and yet I'm well aware of the many republics which surround it. I may not know each name of each head of state nor the intricacies of their respective constitutions but I'm aware they exist and where they are located. And I know I'm certainly not the only Australian to know this.

As someone who holds British citizenship and has lived, studied, worked, socialised and travelled throughout Britain for much of her life - thus I do believe my opinion to bare as much weight as your own - I can only reaffirm the opinion that there are many in Britain who are aware that there are other European monarchies, but that the interest is not present to be further educated on the matter.

We can be aware of something without knowing more about it, after all.

Traditions, wealth and perhaps their strong religious nature. There is a central church they go to or are supposed to attend so that might be a contributing factor to the bond that keeps them united. I may be wrong but I've read that faith keeps your going stronger. The monarchs from Saudi Arabia also stand strong but we don't hear much about the other royal families because did not have any particular religion as choice.

Well, for start, they are 16 times more royal than any other royal family (the Queen being queen of 16 realms). They don't marry their personal trainers or friends of drug lords, date nude models or have extramarital children. None of them are named after Greek goddesses or tried for corruption. None of them claims to be able to speak with angels. Shall I go on?
