What areas do royals specialize on?

What subjects and areas of culture, healthcare, the environment do royals specialize on? for example:

  • Letizia has worked for several years now on rare diseases and nutrition issues
  • Mette Marit has been an HIV prevention advocate and UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador
  • Albert of monaco has worked on environmental causes for several years
  • Charlene has highlighted the need to teach kids to swim through her foundation
  • Mabel has concentrated for several years on gender initiatives, particularly women
  • Madeleine and her mother Silvia work on childhood issues through their foundation
  • Sofia jumped on this childhood issues wagon too with Project Playground

Victoria's crown princess fund focusses on providing leisure and recreational activities with kids who have disabilities or chronic illnesses.

Daniel seems very involved in health and young entrepeneurship initiatives.

Prince Harry's two main focusses are of course veterans (walking with the wounded/invictus) and Senteble.

Camilla's major focusses are osteoporosis and animal well-fare. And childhood literacy.

Sophie is passionately involved in blindness and eye related issues.

Anne has been patron of 'save the child' for 46 years. She is also involved with programs to get disabled kids riding.

Andrew focusses on education/training/entrepeneurship in the technology field as well as his work with the armed forces both in the UK and abroad (he is often in Canada for it).

Edward is of course focussed on the DoE awards for the past few years.

Princess Laurentien is a UNESCO envoy for literacy and has won awards for it

Mathilde is involved with the world economic forum since 2007, and is involved with UNICEF and world immunization programs.

Astrid was president of the Belgian red cross until 2007 and is involved as patron of the military medical corps. She also works with the parolympics.

Claire is involved in promoting British/Belgian relations, and though no official royal role, she is also interested and does work on environmental causes.

Marie of Denmark is a UNESCO representative for Denmark, as well as involved with AIDS and austism.

Most royals have a broad range of patronages, but there is often a theme to many, an area they have a stronger connection to it seems.

-Haya has 2 major passions (beyond her work with the parolympics). One is her personal foundation, the first Arab NGO focussed on combatting hunger. And the other is the International Humanitarian City which provides relief to victims of disasters and other events. She founded the International Humanitarian forum with the UN in 2007 and continues to be active every year.

-Charlene is focussed on children and water safety as well as the parolympics. She was a huge advocate of allowing people with intellectual disabilities to be included in the parolympics

-along with the Olympics, Albert of Monaco is involved in global warming, preserving endangered species and other environmental issues.

-Caroline of Monaco focussed heavily on the arts. She helped found the Monaco ballet, does work with the orchestra, and spring arts festival.

-Stephanie focusses on AIDS, and created a foundation to help people living with it. She is a UNAIDS ambassador

-Lalla Salma founed a cancer prevention foundation for Morocco

-Rania is a champion of child well-fare and education, having founded several charities alone and with her husband. She has been recognized for her work in the area both at home and globally including by UNICEF

-Alia is very involved with animal protection, and Arabian horses

-Princess Kiko who is a sign language interpreter is very involved in the deaf community and promoting support of it

-her husband who is an ornithologist, is involved in nature related patronages includes the National ornithological society

-Anne Marie and Constantine are very involved in helping their former country. They created the Anne-Marie foundation with the money they got from the government as restitution, to help humanitarian projects. They also created the Hellenic college of London, a bilingual school.

-Benedikte is involved with the Girl Guides both in Denmark and abroad

-Princess Birgitta is involved in golf related charities

This is an interesting thread because it highlights something that Monarchies & Royal Families can do far better than Republics and areas in which they make a real difference.

As I see it, the job of politicians is to "run" the state - manage the economy, direct social policy, provide security, et cetera, but what they shouldn't do (and can't do very well anyway) is promote and recognise all the other aspects of a society activities which are part of the identity of a nation.
its heritage, history and culture (the arts).
its voluntary/charity sector and all individuals who serve.
its local communities and clubs, with their initiatives and activities
its 'forgotten' members, the excluded, vulnerable, those living with disabilities or those who are victims of tragedy.
Its contribution to the wider world - through successes in sport, research, humanitarian aid and peace-keeping.

There's nothing worse than a grinning politician praising the achievements of others when we all know s/he is really trying to win support or associate him/herself with success. It's a cyncial PR exercise.

A royal, on the other hand, is able to represent an entire state in expressing support, encouragement, pride, understanding, admiration, respect or care.
