Default The Wit and Humour of Prince Philip

What's this about the slitty-eyed comment? Did Prince Philip say that recently?

He probably said it though I haven't heard it. Let's be honest so many people want William to become King because he willl be a "breath of fresh air" then the law on who he can marry or can not marry will definitely change for his favor. The queen and parliament know that it's possible he may fall in love with a catholic and if she doesn't want to change her religion then they should just amend the law saying that their kids should be raised in the Church of England.

That wasn't recent. It was in the 90s. He said to a group of students in China, "Don't stay here for too long - you'll end up slitty eyed". I thought it was terribly funny but HRH's humour is of an acquired taste I think.

That's right. I later looked at a 'Prince Philips Wit' page which said it was 1986. My favourite was to the young boy who said, "I want to be an astronaut". To which Prince Philip said, "Well you'll have to take some weight off first".

Wow, I guess my sense of humour isn't quite compatible with those who find this funny, but this, to me, just screams of racism. Not quite funny, but that's just me.

We're straying off topic here - is there a topic for this discussion elsewhere? I'll make one.

Racist? They aren't racist comments - they are funny comments and they are comments that actually could have been said by anybody. I'm afraid most British people aren't as politically correct as Europe would have us be.

Nor do we want to be. I heard a good pc one yesterday (not by DoE) - It was about people who are 'aspirationally challenged'!

I live in Canada and we prize ourselves on being respectful of different races and cultures, and I'm quite hesitant about the husband of our monarch going around making jokes about "slitty-eyed" Chinese people. In fact, I find it disgusting.

I agree Skydragon - it is true. In a 'Guide to Etiquette' I have from 1928, it says, "If you are privelaged enough to have a conversation with a member of our Royal Family then it is unforgivable to repeat that conversation to a newspaper. Remember that anything you say may be used against the Royal Family and that isn't acceptable".

LOL! It beggars belief. How many people will say 'the bloody French?' when they see Jacques Chirac on the TV? The same goes for the Germans. I'd rather that than attempting the impossible, which is standing in a circle holding hands singing, "I'd like to teach the world to sing".

The British royals did NOTHING to save the Russian Imperial family
What could they have done? Very little without putting themselves in a risky position.

Yes, that is what people do. Put themselves at risk to save children from being slaughtered. We will never know what could have been done along diplomatic or other channels. It was simply NEVER done.

All of Europe was in the middle of a World War. British soldiers were dying at an appalling rate each day. Many countries resources were severely stretched and they were barely trying to survive.

We also have to remember that the removal of the Czar was initially quite peaceful. No one predicted, not even Nicholas' closest family members who survived, that the whole Imperial family would be obliterated. The Mensheviks who initially took power preferred to work with Nicholas albeit as a marginal figure. It was the Bolsheviks, a rival party who overthrew the Mensheviks, who really started the wholesale destruction, not only of the Imperial family but several less privileged Russians.

Ysbel is right. And whilst I find the Romanov murders to be totally brutal, cruel and inhuman, there were rallies and riots here in Britain praising the action of the Bolsheviks. The Prime Minister sent a message of congratulations to Lenin. We could have lost our Monarchy - and George and Mary knew that if the Monarchy crumbled, it was the end of the society they knew. It's very unfair to blame them for the Romanov deaths.

Yes, unfair. I did NOT blame them for the deaths. I said they did absolutely not one thing to help their cousins. Prince Phillip blamed the Russians alive today for killing his family. That is NOT fair either. And them some of you considered it "humor"!!!
