The Royal Maundy Service - all years (2013: 28 March)

BBC

The Queen is in Liverpool for the ancient Maundy Thursday ceremony.

During the service at the city's Anglican Cathedral the Queen will hand out money to 78 men and 78 women.

Maundy Thursday marks the washing of the disciples' feet by Jesus. British monarchs used to wash subjects' feet, but James II ended the practice.

It is the first time the ceremony has been performed at the cathedral. The locals were selected for their contributions to their communities.

Organisers have selected 78 men and women as a way of marking the Queen's 78th birthday celebrations which take place on 21 April.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived at Liverpool's Lime Street station where she was greeted by the Lord Lieutenant of Liverpool Alan Waterworth and the Chief Constable of Merseyside Norman Bettison.

More than 100 people lined the platform to see her.

Civic reception

Eighteen police horses and their riders, dressed in full ceremonial attire, escorted the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to the cathedral from the station.

At the cathedral, the Queen stopped to chat to many of the pensioners, who must be aged at least 70 to receive the Maundy gift.

Yeomen balanced silver trays containing the purses on their heads as they carried them through the cathedral.

The distribution of Maundy Money is an ancient tradition, full of pomp and ceremony

After the service they will attend a civic reception at Liverpool Hope University.

Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Ron Gould, said: "It is a wonderful honour that the Queen has chosen to visit Liverpool this year for the Maundy Thursday celebrations.

"I am delighted that some of the people who make such a great contribution to our city are receiving this prestigious award from Her Majesty."

The Queen has only missed four Maundy Thursday ceremonies since coming to the throne in 1952.

Traditionally, the monarch would hand out food and wash the feet of the city's poor

Maundy Thursday

Today HM Queen Elizabeth II will go to Wakefield Cathedral, West Yorkshire to attend Royal Maundy Service in conjunction with the Holy Week this week. She will be distributing Maundy money (three purses to every single person who deserves to receive- the number of the poor people will be correspond to her age. There'll be lots of beafeters with lovely costumes. The Queen will be seen with her bouquets.

Perhaps we might want to see few pictures of this annual occassion from the last year:-

I love the dress. And the hat is one of my favourite.
I was looking at picture where she wears this outfit yesterday. Coincidence?

Here are some more pics from Getty!

I must say that the Queen looked superb, really lovely - this colour is really great on her, and she looks so healthy and energetic! :) Nice to see the interaction with the people outside too, that little basket she got was lovely.

Yes, it's very nice to see that the Queen has so many fans, both young and old.
I'm impressed by the fact she recognised the old lady who has followed her for all her life and that she greeted her.
This means that she can perfectly remember people. I'm sure that she just pretends not to recognise famous guitarists and singers.

They've just been showing the Queen giving out Maundy money and it made me cry. I don't know why but it just did. I saw our Queen carrying out a duty centuries old and it just made me think how lucky we are to have not only a Queen but to have her as our Queen. She's just amazing and her devotion to her country and her sense of duty is just enviable.

Her Majesty never seems to tire of things. Yesterday she was at Sandhurst, today it's Maundy service and tomorrow it'll be something else - whatever it is, she just does things without complaint. The BBC Documentary showed her standing on a platform at Windsor for over an hour waving to passing vintage cars. Now how many 79 year olds could or would do that? In the rain? Her feet must have been killing her but she stood there, beaming at each car that passed and waving to the drivers as if she could think of no better way to spend an afternoon.

I think that here in Britain, we truly take Her Majesty for granted. She's the one person who keeps it all together. The Governments may be making a ghastly mess of everything, money might be short, crime may be up - but there's one thing that never changes. And that's our Queen. She's always there, always doing what is right and so with no offence to Beatrix, Margrethe, Silvia, Paola etc but I think that as Queen's go - we've got the best.

I think it's impossible to love someone you've never met and indeed, I've said it often enough but I do love the Queen and it's a love that's always been there and always will be. On the one hand it's a love for her sense of duty and almost a love of her grandmotherly image but on the other it's not only a deep love but a feeling of pride as well as Elizabeth II is my Queen and she's wonderful.

So, I apologise for this truly obsequious post but I mean every word and I don't think we say it often enough. "We love you Ma'am!". I hope that Her Majesty has a wonderful birthday. She truly deserves to.
