The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 2012

This should perhaps be moved to the Diamond Jubilee thread.

The Sunday Times has an article today which describes the concert which is due to be held for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The Golden Jubilee concerts were held within BP gardens and around 12,000 people were able to be accommodated with tickets distributed by public ballot.

This time, however, the concert is apparently to be held on the Mall in front of the Victoria Memorial with around 250,000 expected to watch from the Mall itself and a similar number watching from the adjoining Green Park and St James's Park. It would also be relayed to crowds in Hyde Park.

This means that a crowd of up to 1 million people should be able to take part in the biggest concert in British history.

Names of some of the concert performers are due to be announced later this month and the wish list is thought to include Lady Gaga, Adele, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John.

Gary Barlow is helping to organise the line-up. Strong interest has been shown in performing from American artists. Other possibilities include Ellie Goulding, Mumford & Sons, Jessie J and the rapper Tinie Tempah.

The concert will be broadcast in the US by ABC. The BBC will also sell it to other international broadcasters. The RF would watch from the side of the stage in the memorial gardens.

Details are still subject to change with arrangements still to be agreed with the Metropolitan Police.

The Sunday Times is paywalled, but for any subscribers this is the link:

More for the Diamond Jubilee thread. Is it possible for the thread to be opened yet?

Members of the House of Commons and House of Lords have donated more than £85,000 in order to commission and place a new stained glass window in Westminster Hall, part of the Palace of Westminster. The new window will show an eleven and a half foot depiction of HM's coat of arms.

This is actually a huge honour for the Queen. Westminster Hall is almost 900 years old and a World Heritage Site so any changes to the building are very, very rare.

Westminster Hall is, of course, where monarchs lie in state. Most recently, The Queen Mother's coffin lay in state in the Hall when she passed away in 2002.

Canada to mark Queen's Diamond Jubilee with medal, ceremonies

Canada will mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's ascent to the throne with a series of celebratory gestures in Ottawa and across the country in the coming days, including the unveiling of a special Jubilee emblem carved in ice at Ottawa's annual Winterlude festival — a fitting tribute to the 85-year-old monarch from the snowiest corner of her realm.

Queen Elizabeth attended her first official engagement of her Diamond Jubilee year today, February 3, 2012!

Accompanied by the Princess Royal as Patron of the Woodland Trust's Jubilee Woods Project the Queen planted
an oak on the Sandringham estate that will be a focal point of the new 20-acre Jubilee Wood project which aims
to plant six million native British trees to mark the jubilee.

"It is terribly bleak here - there is nothing between here and Siberia," the Queen commented ;)

Guernsey Post Stamps Commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee

GUERNSEY POST TO CELEBRATE DIAMOND JUBILEE

Guernsey Post stamps will be releasing a commemorative issue for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on 22 February 2012. Guernsey Post has chosen to highlight some of the events which have taken place since the Queen came to the throne with a set of six stamps, a souvenir sheet, presentation pack and first day cover.

Each stamp depicts two images, reflecting her family and public life, including the Queen in her Coronation crown, made in 1661 for the coronation of King Charles II, together with Prince Charles admiring his baby brother, Prince Andrew, in 1960 (36p).

On another stamp (52p) the Queen is shown taking the salute during Trooping the Colour in London in 1983, whilst the image on the right is of two of Her Majesty’s grandchildren, Prince William and Prince Harry, at Wetherby School on 12 September 1989, taken on Prince Harry’s first day at school.

Also marking two separate occasions the Queen is pictured with her mother and President Nelson Mandela of South Africa: it was the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday on 4 August 2000, and, in the previous year, President Mandela was pictured at the beginning of his State Visit to Britain in July 2009 (61p).

Completing the set of six stamps are images which include The Queen presenting the Jules Rimet trophy to Bobby Moore following the team’s victory over West Germany in the World Cup final in 1966 (47p); The Queen in a turban-style hat for an official occasion (48p); and an image of Her Majesty which was taken during her visit to Guernsey on Liberation Day, on 9 May 2009, marking 60 years since the Channel Islands were freed from Nazi occupation (65p).
