Dare, kiss or promise? How Elizabeth II chose the last

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2006/04/15/do1502.xml

A very good and thought-provoking article. An excerpt: "Can there ever have been anyone in public life with less desire to show off, bare her soul, win people's hearts or explain herself in any way?"

I can't begin to describe how much I admire this lovely Queen.

That is really a very good article. A very truthful as well, imo.
Thanks for it.

Royal reminiscences of birthday Queen
Thank you for finding this WindsorIII. The list is both funny and affectionate. :)

I've posted this here as well as the Diana thread, because this BBC documentary to be screened tonight is about the queen leading up to her 80th birthday. However a big part of it discusses Diana and the lessons learned from her life as Princess.

Diana taught Royals 'a harsh lesson'

THE Royal Family learnt a "very harsh lesson" following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, a former aide told a BBC documentary being screened tonight.

...The Queen At 80 looks back over the monarch's life, assessing both the impact of the Princess's death and 1992, the `Annus Horribilis'.
The series followed the Queen on her daily duties, engagements and overseas tours over the past year in the run up to her 80th birthday, which she celebrates on Friday.

I do hope the press isn't going to use the Queen's 80th birthday as an excuse to just rabbit on about Diana. The Queen deserves better treatment from them than that.

Here is a beautiful cover shot of the Queen on the cover of the European Time (dated April 17, 2006 / Vol. 167, No. 16) as a tribute of her 80th birthday.

Huge celebrations planned for Queen's 80th birthday

Her expressed desire for the day to pass quietly was always going to be wishful thinking. Queen Elizabeth II will be reminded mercilessly that her 80th birthday falls on Friday by a blitz of high-profile public events, TV programmes and media attention, underlining the enduring public fascination with her.

While many octogenarians may feel birthdays are something they would rather forget, the Queen who told courtiers not to make a fuss will take part in the biggest royal celebrations since her Golden Jubilee four years ago. All major national TV networks are showing special programmes, crowds are expected to line the streets of Windsor on Friday and Buckingham Palace will host a children's tea party in June.

The plans have been orchestrated by Buckingham Palace, in particular Sir Robin Janvrin, the Queen's private secretary, and Penny Russell-Smith, her canny press secretary, to engage with the public without being seen to go over the top.

As the day approaches, here is a general run down of her 80th birthday celebrations beginning with luncheon on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, there will be a Buckingham Palace luncheon for other people born on April 21, 1926.

The next day the queen will commemorate the 80th year since the granting of royal charters to two London institutions, the BBC and the Royal Institute of International Affairs

On Friday, her actual birthday (not to be confused with her official birthday, the anniversary of her coronation, celebrated with due pomp and ceremony in June), the queen plans to spend the day quietly at Windsor Castle with family and friends.

Also on Friday There is to be a national service of thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, as well as a children's garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Does anyone know at what time Charles' tribute to his mother will be screened on Sky News or the BBC?

Thanks in advance.

A handout photograph obtained 18 April 2006 shows a portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by artist Jemma Phipps. The painting was unveiled to mark the Monarch's 80th birthday, and captures her in one of her Ascot outfits, complete with matching hat. The Queen will celebrate her 80th birthday on Friday 21st April.

All the stamps, pictures and portraits are really lovely. Nice choices.
What event would other royals be attending? The service at St. Paul's Cathedral? Or will they all be at Windsor?

This is a cute story... I love it.

"TODAY a hundred 80-year-olds from across Britain will gather at Buckingham Palace for an 80th birthday lunch with the Queen.

Those who qualified for their gilt-embossed invitations have at least one thing in common with each other and their hostess - all were born on 21 April 1926 - on the same day as Queen Elizabeth II."

That's so cute. What a great idea.
