Why do you always feel the need to compare royals and usually with the underlying thought that other people imply that one is better than another.

She is 63+ years in a function (with looots of vacations anyway and "duties" which include watching horse races). Because of that longevity she suddenly is "the epitome of duty". Maybe I would like to be "the epitome of duty" as well, but when I am hit by a car tomorrow, well, than my "epitome" was shortlived.

Are there actually any royals around who are not "the epitome of duty"?

Yeah, many. My king has worked hard but flubbed alot. The king of spain had scandals. Alot of younger royaals are accused of not doing enough etc etc. So that she has done as much as she has, continiously, without scadals (of her own) and big flubs shows great selfcontrol and duty. I agree that her living this long is a wierd thing to praise her for, but I still think it's worth to celebrate.

I had hoped that this would become a positive thread, and it is, but as Tiggersk8 said ''For those attacking HM, and that is what it is regardless of whatever window dressing excuse you'll use to "defend" what you're doing, for the simple reason of stirring things up in the thread?''

It sparked an interest in me since I had not seen any American companies so far mark this special milestone (not that they wont or haven't or even will, I just have not seen any )

To be honest, I don't think I've seen anyone in this thread attacking or really denigrating HM. The statement where there is a variety of different opinions is one made in an article which states something along the lines of "what has the Queen really accomplished of note?". (my paraphrasing of the statement).

Indeed. No one is attacking Her Majesty. The accomplishment of the Queen is mainly because she came on the throne on a young age and lives on to an advanced age. Only two days ago Lord Edward John Barrington Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu passed away. The noble gentleman inherited his title at the age of two and held his peerage for 86 years and 155 days.... Is that an achievement or is this just how fortune, circumstances and "fate" defined the length? With the same "fate" the Prince of Wales will have a short Reign. Or he will even share the "fate" of Louis de Bourbon, "Le Grand Dauphin", son of King Louis XIV, who never succeeded because his father outlived him?

Oh I agree. Plus, no matter how or why Queen Elizabeth II's long reign happened, it did and will always go down in history as such. The intricate details of why and not someone else doesn't matter. She is to be recognized for this accomplishment.

The Queen is served cornflakes in a Tupperware container every morning - a bit of trivia that was revealed a few years ago (alas, Tupperware seems to have missed out on a Royal Warrant!)

When he was working as a cleaner to make ends meet, aspiring artist Alastair Barford wondered whether he would ever make a living as a painter.

His future is looking rather brighter now, after he landed his first ever commission: a portrait of the Queen.

Mr Barford, 28, was hired by the Illustrated London News (ILN) to paint Her Majesty to mark the occasion of her becoming our longest-reigning monarch, a landmark she will reach on September 9.

Mr Barford, from Bridport in Dorset, said: “The whole thing was quite a shock really. I had an email one Monday asking me if I would paint the Queen, and the next week I was at the Garter ceremony at Windsor Castle.

“I was there for two hours, watching her from a distance, but I could only see her for about 10 minutes of that time. I made some sketches, got what I could, and had someone taking photographs, but it wasn’t a fantastic way of doing it.”

“It was daunting, because painting her comes with a lot of expectations as she means so much to so many people, yet I didn’t have a chance to get to know her, which I usually do with my subjects.

I think this is an incredible portrait. I love it and that fact that we have information regarding how it was created, adds to that. Not keen on the lack of background but that is just me.

. The point is that we are hopefully going to witness history in the making, English history will be made on that day, history books will be re-written. Out will go Victoria's name and will come Elizabeth II as the longest reigning monarch. That is the reality, that is it's importance. It may be a historical fluke but there it is.

Palace sources said the heir to the throne would instead honour a long-standing commitment to spend the day, September 9, at Dumfries House, the stately home he helped rescue for the nation, in Ayrshire, 150 miles away.

Seb - If the Queen is going to celebrate (something I doubt she will be doing), Charles will be there.

On 9 September 2015, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest-reigning sovereign in Canada’s modern era, exceeding the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.

To mark this historic reign, the Bank of Canada will issue a special commemorative bank note in 2015. The note will be a variation of the existing $20 polymer bank note that already features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The variation will incorporate a special mention of Her Majesty’s reign.
