Another personal request from the Queen, she personally wanted to lay a wreath at the memorial.

The Queen had also asked to speak to the RCMP officers and veterans present at the event.

While the Queen stops to talk to several people, I've noticed from this event and the gala tonight that Prince Philip in particular likes to chat with everyone. In fact the Queen looked back a few times and then waited a couple of minutes for Prince Philip as he finished talking.

An article about the event

Queen marks Mounties' deaths at solemn tribute

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip participated in brief ceremony honouring the memories of four Alberta RCMP officers gunned down in March.

"That Her Majesty took time out of her busy schedule to honour four brave men who gave their lives in the service of their country, there could be no greater honour for us," said RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zacardelli in Regina on Thursday.

The royal couple stood silently in front of a simple stone cenotaph at the RCMP Depot listing the names of all 207 RCMP officers killed in the line of duty.

They then placed a wreath in front of the names of Constables Peter Schiemann, 25, Tony Gordon, 28, Brock Myrol, 29, and Leo Johnston, 32.

All four were killed at a farm northwest of Edmonton on March 3. Jim Roszko ambushed the four men and then turned a gun on himself.

The families of the slain officers had a private audience with the Queen beforehand.

"The Queen talked about the perils of policing and certainly recognizes what our police officers do every day. They lay their lives on the line for our protection," said the Rev. Don Schiemann, Peter's father.

Keith Myrol, father of Brock, was last in Regina in February to celebrate his son's graduation from the RCMP training academy.

"We have to understand that our boys deserve the honour and that's why we are here," he said.

After the wreath-laying, Her Majesty reviewed lines of current and retired Mounties in their dress red serge uniforms and graciously accepted bouquets of flowers from some young girls.

The ceremony took about 20 minutes. The Queen, dressed in a cobalt blue dress and matching hat, made no public speech.

Prince Philip and the Queen then climbed back in their limousine and headed off to the airport to travel to Saskatoon.

They toured the University of Saskatchewan and were presented with the key to the city. They were to return to Regina late in the evening.

After the royal couple left, the families of the slain officers gathered in front of the cenotaph to snap pictures -- or just to stare at their loved one's names.

In Saskatoon later during the day, the Queen saw the Canadian Light Source synchrotron, the largest science project in the country, and was given the keys to the city. This event wasn't covered live because of the historic events going on in the Canadian Parliament at the time. But I did manage to see a few highlights.
Here's a small article as well:

4:00 p.m. Saskatoon
We're waiting for the Queen inside the Canadian Light Source synchrotron, housed in a mammoth, buzzing facility. From inside the building, it looks like a gigantic silver Beyblade toy.

The plan is for the Queen to stroll along the second-floor balcony, while the Duke explores the innards of the machinery down below.

They've actually turned off the synchrotron today for the benefit of the royal couple – apparently, it makes quite a racket as its giant magnets whirl electrons around at the speed of light.

A group of scientists explains how the synchrotron works. In a nutshell, it produces a highly intense pure beam of light that can be used for research on cancer, mad cow disease, pollution, forensics– you name it. Kind of the Swiss Army knife of research facilities.

It cost $173 million, but apparently that didn't include central air – it's pretty steamy up here.

4:27 p.m. Saskatoon

Here comes Her Majesty. Wearing a royal blue suit and matching hat, she nods as a scientist, arms waving, explains how the synchrotron at the University of Saskatchewan works.
Just before she arrives, a federal offical tells us that the Liberal government has survived the budget vote. The royal visit will continue.

Here are the pics from the Lieutanent Governor's Saskatchewan Centennial Gala.

Before the Queen arrived there were two or three performances. Then around 15 minutes later the audience was given the cue to stand for the Queen's arrival, a beautiful fanfare was played by the symphony orchestra, and then the Queen made an entrance.
God save the Queen was sung followed by O' Canada.

I found the music absolutely beautiful. My favourite part was a dance segment feature native, ukrainian, ballet, and other dancers, all reflecting the province's heritage. That was amazing. All the artists and guests featured on stage were born in Saskatchewan. Some 11,000 people attended the gala.

btw...the pictures are grainy I know but that wasnt my fault. For some reason on my computer I dont get a clear reception of the network the gala was aired on.
The Queen is accompanied by Sask. Lieutenant Governor Dr Lynda Haverstock

Here's a really good excerpt from an article about the gala

Royals Have 'Name That Tune' Moment at Gala Concert

It was on the tip of her tongue – she could hum it but just could not name that tune.

Her husband too had heard it before yet he was also stuck for the title.

They both knew the singer who had made the song famous and were about to meet her.

Joni Mitchell, whose song Both Sides Now seemed so familiar, was being presented to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The royal couple were guests of honour at a gala concert in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, during their tour of Canada.

Saskatchewan’s lieutenant governor Dr Lynda Haverstock was with the royals.

“They had not only heard of Joni Mitchell...she and the Duke of Edinburgh were discussing what exactly was the title of the song.

“She was grappling with what the title was,” said Dr Haverstock.

Joni Mitchell, who comes from Saskatchewan, did not perform at the concert but a medley of her songs formed the show’s finale.

Comedy actor Leslie Neilsen, who was born in Saskatchewan’s capital Regina, made a brief appearance and later met the Queen.

“We simply looked at each other; there seemed to be an exchange of hidden meaning – at least, it was hidden from me and it was definitely hidden from her,” he joked.

I should mention that this entire event was included in the royal itinerary upon the personal request of the Queen, she also requested to meet the family members.
It's things like this that make us proud to have her as our Queen.

Thanks, again, ~*~Humera~*~ for the reports and pics and caps.

I agree Warren. It was a really nice touch on her part to request to visit privately with the families.

I don't recall the Queen ever attending a memorial service in Canada before. Does anyone know if this is something new, or has she done it before?

HER MATCH THE QUEEN'S COLOUR-COORDINATED REIGN

THE Queen's got it covered when it comes to keeping dry and smart in the rain - colour-coordinated brollies.

Drenched wellwishers cheered yesterday as she appeared in a red coat and hat, clutching an umbrella with matching piping. She regularly uses coloured brollies to fit in with her outfits.

The Queen, who is on tour in Canada, was in Regina to mark its centenary.

TORONTO — Queen Elizabeth II attended a memorial Thursday for four slain Mounties in what was the deadliest attack on Canadian police officers in 120 years.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, began the third day of their visit at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police national training center in Regina in the western province of Saskatchewan, where she met privately with the families of the slain Mounties.

At a service, the couple placed a wreath at a memorial for the slain officers.

The queen, wearing a blue suit and matching straw hat, resumed her western tour to celebrate the centennials of Saskatchewan and Alberta joining the Canadian confederation.

The 79-year-old monarch is Canada's symbolic head of state and has visited the country 22 times since her coronation.

Though Canadians are generally indifferent to the monarchy, many have great affection for the queen, whose silhouette marks their coins.

The queen and Prince Philip arrived late Tuesday in Regina, 66 years to the day after her father, King George VI, became the first reigning monarch to visit Canada.

"For more than half the life of the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta you have been our queen," Prtime Minister Paul Martin said at the welcoming ceremony. "You have born witness to the changes, the challenges and the achievements of Canadians. You are a part of that history; you're majesty, you are a part of us."
