I'm a 27 year old male, and I'm not interested in jewelry or what the royals are wearing. I'm interested in the Queen as an historical and iconic person and the constitutional monarchy as an institution, but I agree, the rubies looks stunning and so does the Queen.

This should be discussed in this thread.

The Queen charms Berlin and even has robots saluting her, ROBERT HARDMAN writes | Daily Mail Online

Quote:
The most powerful woman in the world sat down for a cup of tea with the most famous woman in the world yesterday.

And Angela Merkel got on so well with the Queen that, three hours later, the German chancellor tore up her diary, abandoned a meeting on the Greek economy and did the same all over again.

Arriving unannounced at a Berlin university moments ahead of the Queen yesterday afternoon, Mrs Merkel told the university's president: 'The Greeks are still talking so I thought I'd come here instead.'

Such is the pulling power of the only world leader who now warrants her own entry in the official dictionary of the German language – as 'die Queen'. Any other queen would be 'eine konigin'.

But the British monarch – embarking on her 270th overseas tour ten months short of her 90th birthday – stands in a class of her own.

Even so, a day full of UK-German bilateral bonhomie, culminating in last night's state banquet, got off to a slightly sticky start.
I can't describe how amazing the Queen is . When I saw her through live streaming in Berlin yesterday, it struck me that I did not want to live in a world without the Queen, but I will have to. And I'm sure that Charles and William will do a great job.

The Queen, top diplomat and Idol.

Berlin bejubelt Elizabeth II.: Die Queen, oberste Diplomatin und Idol - n-tv.de

I am impressed by how large the German media coverage of this state visit has been, but I'm not impressed with the so called German royal experts. One of them warned people not to take pictures of the Queen with their phones because she hates it. This is just nonsense.

The Queen was just saying that she finds it strange when people try to take selfies with her. "She was saying, 'I miss eye contact'." Her Majesty is said to have made the comments during a chat" to US ambassador Matthew Barzun at Buckingham Palace after his appointment.

Turns out the Queen is not a fan of the royal selfie - BBC Newsbeat

The Queen appears to have conquered the hearts of the German press, as her state visit attracted the heaviest local coverage of any royal tour in recent memory.

Bild, the country’s biggest-selling newspaper, gave up its entire front page to a full-lenth photo of the Queen, with the giant headline “We love you, ma’am!” in English.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II thrilled Germany” read an only slightly smaller second headline, framed with the British and German flags.

Pages two, three and four of the newspaper were given over to the visit, with a report on the monrach’s meeting with Angela Merkel headlined “The Queen of England meets the Queen of Europe”.

Süddeutsche Zeitung ran a picture of Her Majesty on its front page, with the soberer headline “Royal Greetings”

Even the usually dry Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung ran a large picture of the Queen and Mrs Merkel on its front page, under the headline “Harmonious contrast”

Berlin’s paper of record, Tagesspiegel, ran a large pictue of the Queen’s boat trip on the river Spree.

Video: Cheering crowd welcomes Queen and Prince Philip to Frankfurt - Telegraph

Quote:
Then the Queen and the Duke encountered what may have been the longest red carpet they have ever seen as their hosts laid 300 metres of red carpet so they could walk along the cobbled, tramlined streets in comfort.

Around 10,000 Germans waving British and German flags cheered the royal couple on, reflecting the country’s obsession with the Royal family.

Among them was Jana Bergmann, 16, who said: “I love the Queen. She is an idol for everyone. We are all fascinated by her. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a living legend like the Queen.”

Asked why she admired her, she said: “She is just the Queen! She is always polite, she has been there for 60 years and never done anything wrong. She is just great.”

Others shouted: “We love you Your Majesty and Prince Philip!”

Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia and his wife Sophie are there as well as Margrave Max von Baden and Alexander and Irina zu Schönburg-Glauchau. Donatus, Prince and Landgrave of Hesse

Quote:
During the First World War the issue of his family’s Germanic origins was so sensitive that the Queen’s grandfather, King George V, replaced his family name, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, with that of Windsor.

Today, however, there were no such qualms about celebrating those links. Indeed, on a visit to the financial powerhouse of Frankfurt, the Queen looked delighted as she was introduced to some of her husband’s own German relatives at an official lunch.

Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, Philip is actually a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg. His mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg while his four sisters married German princes.

The Queen has met survivors and liberators of Bergen-Belsen on her first ever visit to the site of a Nazi concentration camp.

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen laid a wreath at a memorial to the 70,000 Jews, Russians and other prisoners who died at the place where the Nazis committed “the ultimate blasphemy”.

The cheers and applause that have accompanied the Queen every step of the way during her four-day State visit to Germany were replaced by silence at a patch of land where evil once settled.

She and the Duke stood in quiet contemplation by the grass mounds covering mass graves which hold the remains of up to 5,000 people each.

The Queen looked to be on top form, as usual, during the walkabout and she looked dignified during the visit to Bergen-Belsen.

The state visit is over, but I don't think or hope it is the last.

I read that Bild called HM "The Queen of England and the Queen of Europe"! That's quite a compliment from a German publication.

Another successful tour ends for HM and the DoE. All credit to them for yet another job well done. What treasures they are.

It's great to see the Queen on a walkabout and I must say, overseas tours and amongst the crowds at home and abroad are when I think she looks her very best.

It is indeed breathtaking and suggestive to see HM on a walkabout... it may seem a silly thought, but to me the Queen gives away her true essence when walking...

The Queen and Prince Philip looked great on this tour. I must say that Her Majesty's wardrobe was very nice as well.

I think The Queen and Prince Phillip looked wonderful on this trip. And, I'm amazed that she is 89 and is 94! I think most of us can only hope to look so good if we live to this age.

This past state visit to Germany was such an overwhelming success! Although approaching 90 and the DoE is approaching 95, this couple hasn't lost one ounce of the stuff that makes them so regal and personable to the people. It totally amazes me how much stamina these two wonderful seniors exhibit and we know it is because they want to and not because they have to.

We do realize that these two wonderful people are mortal and there will come a time when they are no longer with us and we will mourn their passing yet we will come to realize something. Spanning over 60 years as the monarch and her consort, I think the legacy that will be left behind will be the perfect examples of how to represent one's country that they love and serve. Queen Victoria may have been called the Grandmother of Europe but her descendant, Elizabeth II, will forever be known as The Queen. The German press definitely got that one right.
